So in other words, He says, "Any person who is engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, never mind he might have something externally immoral habits due to his past association—it doesn't matter."

So some way or other, one should be Kṛṣṇa conscious. And then, gradually, he will become a saintly person. As he goes on executing this process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then, with his advancement, he becomes a perfect saint. That you'll find in the Bhagavad-gītā. Sādhu means saintly person. Titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām ([[Vanisource:SB 3.25.21|SB 3.25.21]]).

He's tolerant, he's very kind to everyone, and he's friend to all living entities. He has no enemy, or he is nobody's enemy. And he's peaceful. These are some of the qualification. There are twenty-six qualification in details. But these are some of the qualification. And in the Bhagavad-gītā you'll find the description of a sādhu, saintly person, is given by the Lord Himself. And what is that? He says:

He said: "Arjuna, a person who is cent percent engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he might be externally, ephemerally seen to be addicted to some bad habits. Still, you should consider him to be a saint." "You should consider him to be saint."

What is that? Now, suppose we have contaminated so many things in our material life. There are, in a material calculation, there are so many things which are the list. One list is for morality and another list is for immorality. I do not wish to discuss this list because in . . . for a person which is immorality, for another person it is not immorality—it is morality. Just like according to our conception, hindu conception, drinking of wine is immoral, whereas in your country drinking of wine is not immoral; it is common thing. Of course . . . so according to time, class, place, the conception of morality and immorality are different. But there is a, a sense of immorality and morality in everywhere. That is a fact.

So Kṛṣṇa says that, "Even if you see a person immoral, but he is completely engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then it should be concluded that he is a saint. He's a saintly person." So far consciousness is concerned, I am conscious about my bodily pains and pleasures; you are conscious about your bodily pains and pleasures. You are not conscious of my bodily pains and pleasure, I am not conscious of your bodily pains. But God is conscious of your consciousness and my consciousness and everything. That is the difference between God and you and me. He knows what is pains and pleasure within you, He knows what is pains and pleasure within me or any living entity. He knows everything. Therefore He is all-cognizant, all-powerful, almighty. He knows everything. That is explained in the . . . janmādy asya yataḥ anvayād itarataś ca artheṣu abhijñaḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 1.1.1|SB 1.1.1]]). He is cognizant of everything. He knows everything. In the Bhagavad-gītā also He says that, "I know past, present, future everywhere." So consciousness is there. One is the supreme consciousness, and the other is this limited consciousness. So far we are concerned, our consciousness is limited, and so far God is concerned, His consciousness is unlimited. But we are both conscious. So far consciousness is concerned, the quality is one. But one . . . just like a drop of seawater, Pacific Ocean. The taste is the same, salty, but a drop of water is very insignificant.

A brahmin does not do [handwritten] like that. If he did so in India, he would be highly criticized. So even if you eat a little, still you must wash immediately. And the place that you eat at must be washed off immediately also. In this way.

To be a brahmana means that one is clean inside and out by chanting the maha mantra and bathing regularly. All our initiates must chant at least 16 rounds a day and follow very strictly the regulative principles. This will give one spiritual strength.

The intelligent class of men who form the head of the society, if they are lacking, if there is no intelligent class of men, then it is to be considered that sort of human society is dead, because the head is not there. Similarly, at the present moment there is lack of intelligent class of men. Intelligent class of men . . . who is intelligent class of men?

There are so many intelligent class of men. So according to Bhagavad-gītā, intelligent class of men can be tested by some qualification. What is that? Satya śaucaṁ samaḥ damaḥ titikṣa ārjavam, jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam ([[Vanisource:BG 18.42 (1972)|BG 18.42]]).

Intelligent class of men means . . . first qualification is that he must be truthful. Then, satya, śaucam. He must be always clean. Bahyābhyantaram: he must be clean without and within. "Without" means . . . on the external body, cleanliness means soap and water. But inside cleanliness means Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

But another man gives you another plan. Therefore in the political world there are so many "isms," and they are fighting with one another. That means there is no standard intelligence. I differ from you; you differ from me. Now, nobody knows who is intelligent.

The purport of this mantra is that if anyone is impure, apavitraḥ . . . pavitraḥ means pure. Anyone, either he is pure or impure, it doesn't matter. Apavitraḥ pavitraḥ vā sarvāvasthām. In any condition of life, it doesn't matter. Pure or impure, there are two conditions. Someone is impure, someone is pure. So either way, namo apavitraḥ pavitro, sarvāvasthām, in any condition, yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣam: anyone who remembers puṇḍarīkākṣam, means Viṣṇu or Kṛṣṇa . . .

Yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa, that person, bahyābhyantaraṁ śuciḥ, he immediately becomes cleansed inside and outside. Śuciḥ, śuciḥ means clean or śuciḥ means brāhmin. Brāhmin means clean. You have got all threads, so you should always prove that you are always clean. Bahyābhyantaraṁ śuciḥ. Śrī Viṣṇu śrī viṣṇu śrī viṣṇu. So this is remembering Viṣṇu.

"These four classes of classification of the society, it is made by Me." That means this classification of society in the human society, that is made by God. What is that classification? The Brāhmin, the Kṣatriya, the Vaiśya and the Śūdra. It is not the name, but it is guṇa-karma. Brāhmin means quality and work, Kṣatriya means quality and work, and Vaiśya means quality and work. There is no question of birthright.

It is a false proposition that a Brāhmin's son becomes Brāhmin. No, not necessarily. If he properly becomes initiated under the guidance of a spiritual master, then he is Brāhmin. Otherwise, if he has acquired the qualities of a Śūdra, then he should be considered as a Śūdra. These are the śāstric injunctions. And this classification is all over the world. Don't think that it is Indian or Vedic system. No. In every country, in every place, in every planet, these four divisions are there.

Brāhmins means those who are interested in spiritual life, they are called Brāhmins, intelligent class. They are called intelligent class, because unless one is intelligent, he will simply consider that this body is he, identification of the body. That is foolishness. Brāhmins means brahma jānātīti brāhmaṇaḥ . . . one who knows that "I am ahaṁ brahmāsmi," and he has actually realized that "I am not this body; I am pure spirit self . . ." It is not the question of Hindu, Muslim. Anyone. Anyone who knows this knowledge that "I am the self," and acts in that way, is a Brāhmin.
