Prabhupāda: That we are loving. We are giving Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is loving, real loving. We are giving him eternal life, eternal bliss. Unless we love them, why we are taking so much trouble? The preacher must love the people. Otherwise why he is taking? He can do it for himself at home. Why he is taking so much trouble? Why in eighty years old I have come here if I do not love? So who can love better than a preacher? He loves even the animals. Therefore they are preaching, "Don't take meat." Do they love the animals, rascals? They are eating, and they love their country, that's all. Nobody loves. It is simply sense gratification. If somebody loves, he is Kṛṣṇa conscious, that's all. All rascals. They are after their own sense gratification, and they will put a signboard, "I love everyone." This is their business. And fools are accepting, "Oh, this man is very philanthropic." He does not love any man. He loves only senses. That's all. The servant of the senses, that's all. Everyone is working because he is getting money. Where is the love? The minister, the prime minister, everyone, if they say, "No money, no salary," nobody will go there. He takes the opportunity of taking money by bribe, by this way. Therefore they are: "I love your country. Elect me as president." That's all. What this president has done, Nixon? He has stolen so many things. So what is his love for the country?

Paramahaṁsa: He was a bad one, but some of them are good.

Prabhupāda: No, no, some . . . everyone is bad. The man who is talking, he is also bad man. Everyone is bad man. Here there is no good man. Do you think in the prison house any good men go there? All criminals. So anyone who has come in this material world, he is a criminal. Therefore he is punished by this material body, simply suffering. Why you have covered? Because this body cannot tolerate this cold. So the body means suffering, material body. Anyone who has got this material body, he is suffering. Nobody is enjoying. Is a wrong idea. He is thinking . . . that is called māyā. He is suffering, but he is thinking, "I am enjoying." This is called māyā.

Amogha: But the schoolteachers and the church leaders and my parents and grandfather, they all seem to think that it's all right what we're doing, so . . .

Prabhupāda: That we are loving. We are giving Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is loving, real loving. We are giving him eternal life, eternal bliss. Unless we love them, why we are taking so much trouble? The preacher must love the people. Otherwise why he is taking? He can do it for himself at home. Why he is taking so much trouble? Why in eighty years old I have come here if I do not love? So who can love better than a preacher? He loves even the animals. Therefore they are preaching, "Don't take meat." Do they love the animals, rascals? They are eating, and they love their country, that's all. Nobody loves. It is simply sense gratification. If somebody loves, he is Kṛṣṇa conscious, that's all. All rascals. They are after their own sense gratification, and they will put a signboard, "I love everyone." This is their business. And fools are accepting, "Oh, this man is very philanthropic." He does not love any man. He loves only senses. That's all. The servant of the senses, that's all. Everyone is working because he is getting money. Where is the love? The minister, the prime minister, everyone, if they say, "No money, no salary," nobody will go there. He takes the opportunity of taking money by bribe, by this way. Therefore they are: "I love your country. Elect me as president." That's all.

Paramahaṁsa: Ostriches stick their head in a hole in the ground.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Amogha: But there must be some progress, because so many are joining the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement.

Prabhupāda: They are making real advancement. Bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇam. Their these material anxieties will be over. They are making advancement. Ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇam ([[Vanisource:CC Antya 20.12|CC Antya 20.12]]). By chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa their dirty heart will be cleansed, and as soon as it is fully cleansed, the problems of material existence will be over. No more anxiety.

Prabhupāda: Yes. It is authoritative statement of Kṛṣṇa. Na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ (BG 7.15). So these classes of men do not surrender to Kṛṣṇa. So anyone who has not surrendered to Kṛṣṇa, he comes within these categories. This is a plain description if we believe in Bhagavad-gītā. All rascals.

Amogha: But he would say, "There are many people also like me who . . . we don't harm anybody. We just live our own life, and . . ."

Prabhupāda: But you harm yourself. Because you are a rascal, you do not know what is your future. You do not harm others, but you are harming yourself. You do not know what you are and how you are harming yourself. You are such a rascal. You pose to be that you do not make any harm to anyone, but you are doing harm to yourself. Na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇum (SB 7.5.31). You do not know what is the harm to yourself. You are such a fool. So what is the use of . . .? Nobody can do any harm to anyone. Prabhupāda: So why you are thinking of your son's future, your grandson's . . . why don't you think of your future?

Amogha: It makes me happy to think that they'll be happy.

Prabhupāda: That is madness. That is madness.

Amogha: If I get insurance policy, then they will have some money after I go . . .

Prabhupāda: No, no, that is natural, that you think of future. But the foolishness is you don't think of your future. That is foolishness. This is natural. Because every living entity is eternal; therefore he has future. But for himself he is thinking, "There is no life, next." And he is thinking of the life which will come as his grandson or son, what will be their future. And he is blind about the own future. This is fourth-class man. Suppose some danger is coming. So shall I take care of you, "How you will be saved? How you will be saved?" How I will be saved—that is my first business. That he does not know. There have been many cases; there is all of a sudden fire. The man has left everything, and his baby was there. He was crying, "Oh, I have left my . . ." The natural tendency—"First of all save me." Self-preservation is the first law of nature. So why did he forget about his baby? Now, when he comes out, he is thinking about baby. This is natural, that he does not think about himself; he is thinking about future generation. "What nonsense will come as my son or grandson?" Just see. This is fourth-class man.

Amogha: So he should first save himself, then think about how to save others.

Prabhupāda: Yes. First of all he must know what he is actually saving. That he does not know. He is thinking of his country. Suppose next birth he becomes a cow and his countrymen will send him to the slaughterhouse. So what is the use of having your country? The same country, the national . . . the cow is also national, you are also national, but the law is the cow is to be sent to the slaughterhouse. Therefore they have been all described as mūḍhā, rascals, only rascals. Except a Kṛṣṇa conscious person, all persons are rascals. Do you admit or not?

Amogha: Yes.

Prabhupāda: Yes. It is authoritative statement of Kṛṣṇa. Na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ ([[Vanisource:BG 7.15 (1972)|BG 7.15]]). So these classes of men do not surrender to Kṛṣṇa. Prabhupāda: Latin, yes. People's vote. The people may be asses, but still, their votes will be taken, the vox populi. The fourth-class, fifth-class men, and they are giving vote. And the mistake is detected. Just like this Nixon was voted, and the mistake was detected. But still, they follow the same process, vox populi. What is the value of the votes of the fourth-class, fifth-class men? Better one intelligent man, if he knows things, if he is liberated, if he says, "This is right," that should be taken. That is Vedic civilization. We are accepting Kṛṣṇa. We are not accepting the vox populi. One person, the Supreme, that's all. This is our process. We don't accept vox populi. All these Vedic literature are accepted not on the people's vote, but who is presenting? Vyāsadeva is presenting, Kṛṣṇa is presenting, Parāśara Muni is presenting. Therefore they are accepted. You cannot expect the mass of people very intelligent. That is not possible. So what is the value of their votes if they are not intelligent?

But in the Western countries this is the disease, vox populi. Socrates said there is soul, and he was killed because vox populi was against. Christ was killed because vox populi was against. This is the defect of the Western civilization. During the lifetime of Christ, nobody accepted. When he was killed, or crucified, then the other saintly persons, they gave their experience, what they learned from Jesus Christ. Christ could not give any words. Some sporadic words were there, and the Bible was made on that basis. Actually, the Bible is not the word, directly words, of Christ.

Amogha: That must be why it says . . . it says, "The Gospel According to John," "The Gospel According to Mark."

Prabhupāda: Ah, yes.

Gaṇeśa: Even his disciples denounced him when they were going to crucify him. They said, "Oh, I do not know Jesus." (long pause) (break)

Prabhupāda: . . . they are after zeros. Caitanya Mahāprabhu sa . . . śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvaṁ govinda-viraheṇa me (Śikṣāṣṭaka 7). Śūnyāyitam means zero. (break) (out of car) Advancement of civilization is zero. If you add many thousands of zero, does the value increases?

Amogha: No.

Prabhupāda: It remains zero.

Amogha: Big zero.

Prabhupāda: There must be one. Then it will increase the value. That one, Kṛṣṇa consciousness, will make this material civilization hundred times important. And without Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they are all zeros. (break) . . . next life, supposing hypothetically I am going to be a dog, then what is this civilization? But that you cannot say, "No, I am not going to be dog," because you do not know. You are under the . . . completely under the grip of material nature. And there are cats and dogs. How you can guarantee that you are not going to be a dog? Kṛṣṇa says dehāntara-prāptiḥ ([[Vanisource:BG 2.13 (1972)|BG 2.13]]). You will get another body. So how you can say that "No, I am not going to be a dog"? You cannot say; you are not independent. You cannot make your choice. Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa ([[Vanisource:SB 3.31.1|SB 3.31.1]]). By your work, it will be decided by higher authorities. Then how you can say, "No, no, I am not . . . There is no life, there is no . . ." It is all nonsense. Therefore without this knowledge, all this material opulence, it is all zero. It may be some fact for fifty or sixty years, but the world is not for fifty or sixty years—for millions and millions of years.

Guest (1): Could I come back to that eating of meat? Related to this alive, soul, matter. Aren't you in a sense eating another soul, too, if you're eating vegetables? Not only if you're eating meat?

Prabhupāda: No, the thing is, the material world . . . it is said, jīvo jīvasya jīvanam: "One living entity has to eat another living entity to keep himself alive." That is the natural law. But you should have discrimination. Because you have to eat some other living entity, it does not mean that you will eat your own son. You cannot support that "Because I have to live by eating another living entity, so what is the wrong if I eat my son?" Therefore the Vedic injunction is, tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā ([[Vanisource:ISO 1|ISO 1]]). You are given some jurisdiction, you can eat. And actually you do so. Because I have to eat something, we do not eat anything and everything. We have got discrimination. So according to Bhagavad-gītā . . . Prabhupāda: Nobody is His father. That is God. God is everyone's father, but He is without father. That is God. So long one has got father, he is not God. When you come to the point that here is the person who has no father—He is independent—that is God. The definition of God is given in the Vedic literature:

Guest (1): It becomes a belief rather than a logic now, then, for when we think about the God. You were saying everybody has father, so why God, in exception, He hasn't got a father?

Prabhupāda: Therefore He is God, that He can exist without father. But you cannot exist without father. That is the difference between you and God.

Prabhupāda: Nobody is His father. That is God. God is everyone's father, but He is without father. That is God. So long one has got father, he is not God. When you come to the point that here is the person who has no father—He is independent—that is God. The definition of God is given in the Vedic literature:

Prabhupāda: Ramakrishna Mission is not Vedic. It is a creation of Vivekananda's concoction. It is not Vedic. Just like they created a God, Ramakrishna. So that is not a Vedic sanction, that you create any fool, rascal, a god.

The real good for him: that he has forgotten his spiritual identification; revive him to that consciousness. That is real good. (pause) Somebody brings just now bucketfuls of water, and if he proposes, "I shall drench you," "No, no, no, don't do that." But you will find—we are going—the ducks, as soon as they . . . immediately jump on the water. So whether water is good or bad? It is all relative. So don't bother about this good and bad. It is simply mental concoction.

Prabhupāda: Nobody is happy. (break) Therefore in the Bhagavad-gītā it says, śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ ([[Vanisource:BG 2.14 (1972)|BG 2.14]]). Now, something is happiness; the same something is distress. So what is the standard of happiness? The same something is distress for another. One man's food, another man's poison. So where is the standard of happiness? What you are thinking "This is happiness," others are thinking "This is distress."

Paramahaṁsa: That's why we have this modern philosophy that whatever makes you feel good, you should do.

Prabhupāda: No, then everyone is doing . . . (indistinct)

Śrutakīrti: In this world everything is relative, so it's not expected that the same things will please everyone.

Prabhupāda: Then why do you put something as happiness standard or distress standard? So everything is everything, that's all. (laughs) Why do you try to put a standard?

Amogha: We try to simply make the facility if a person wants to change his position.

Prabhupāda: So why you are so much busy in trying like that? Why you are waste your time? You make your own . . .

Śrutakīrti: But that is his happiness. Giving facility to others is what makes me happy.

Prabhupāda: No, he doesn't want to . . . just like if you want to give facility to the hippies—"Please come in nice home"—he will not accept.

Śrutakīrti: No, but we don't want to give to the hippies.

Prabhupāda: Then what is the meaning?

Paramahaṁsa: For those who want . . .

Prabhupāda: You cannot give happiness to everyone according to standard. Then unhappiness will continue, so what is the use of your wasting time? Because you cannot give happiness to everyone, what you think, "It is happiness," others will not accept it. Then where is the happiness?

Amogha: We can give them what they want, and that will make them happy.

Prabhupāda: It is contradictory. One mans want poison; you give him poison. One mans wants food, you give him food. Then what is the standard of your food or poison? Then everything is required. Why do you bother?

Amogha: Well, we have to draw the line somewhere.

Prabhupāda: You can do it foolishly. That is another thing. But everything is all right. Poison is all right, and food is all right.

If you agree that, "Swāmījī asking me. We'll chant," you can chant. But if you don't do it, that is your business. The task is not difficult. Task is very easy. Even a child can do it. But if you are stubborn, "No, no, I will not do it," then what can be done? Enechi auṣadhi māyā nāśibāro . . . you know this song, huh? Caitanya Mahāprabhu says . . . you have got this cassette? Jīv jāgo, jīv jāgo, gauracānda bole.

Yes, He is big in everything, but you should not imitate, because you are not as big as Kṛṣṇa. Tejīyasāṁ na doṣāya ([[Vanisource:SB 10.33.29|SB 10.33.29]]). He is very powerful.
