It is stated here that Bindu-sarovara was surrounded by pious trees and birds. As there are different classes of men in human society, some pious and virtuous and some impious and sinful, so also among trees and birds there are the pious and the impious. Trees which do not bear nice fruit or flowers are considered impious, and birds which are very <span class="highlight_terms">nasty</span>, such as crows, are considered impious. In the land surrounding Bindu-sarovara there was not a single impious bird or tree. Every tree bore fruits and flowers, and every bird sang the glories of the Lord—Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.

But even though liberated, he was, for the time being, afflicted by the illusion of māyā, thinking himself the brother of Uttama in the bodily concept of life. The whole material world is working on the basis of "I" and "mine." This is the root of attraction to the material world. If one is attracted by this root of illusory conceptions—"I" and "mine"—he will have to remain within this material world in different exalted or nasty positions. By the grace of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the sages and Lord Manu reminded Dhruva Mahārāja that he should not continue this material conception of "I" and "mine." Simply by devotional service unto the Lord his illusion could be eradicated without difficulty.

It is the duty of parents to hand over their daughters to suitable persons just befitting their family tradition in cleanliness, gentle behavior, wealth, social position, etc. Dakṣa was repentant that on the request of Brahmā, who was his father, he had handed over his daughter to a person who, according to his calculation, was nasty. He was so angry that he did not acknowledge that the request was from his father. Instead, he referred to Brahmā as parameṣṭhī, the supreme teacher in the universe; because of his temperament of gross anger, he was not even prepared to accept Brahmā as his father. In other words, he accused even Brahmā of being less intelligent because he had advised Dakṣa to hand over his beautiful daughter to such a nasty fellow. In anger one forgets everything, and thus Dakṣa, in anger, not only accused the great Lord Śiva, but criticized his own father, Lord Brahmā, for his not very astute advice that Dakṣa hand over his daughter to Lord Śiva.

The residents of the material world who enjoy the products of these flowing rivers have no wrinkles on their bodies and no grey hair. They never feel fatigue, and perspiration does not give their bodies a bad odor. They are not afflicted by old age, disease or untimely death, they do not suffer from chilly cold or scorching heat, nor do their bodies lose their luster. They all live very happily, without anxieties, until death.

This verse hints at the perfection of human society even within this material world. The miserable conditions of this material world can be corrected by a sufficient supply of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, molasses, food grains, ornaments, bedding, sitting places and so on. This is human civilization. Ample food grains can be produced through agricultural enterprises, and profuse supplies of milk, yogurt and ghee can be arranged through cow protection. Abundant honey can be obtained if the forests are protected. Unfortunately, in modern civilization, men are busy killing the cows that are the source of yogurt, milk and ghee, they are cutting down all the trees that supply honey, and they are opening factories to manufacture nuts, bolts, automobiles and wine instead of engaging in agriculture. How can the people be happy? They must suffer from all the misery of materialism. Their bodies become wrinkled and gradually deteriorate until they become almost like dwarves, and a bad odor emanates from their bodies because of unclean perspiration resulting from eating all kinds of nasty things. This is not human civilization. If people actually want happiness in this life and want to prepare for the best in the next life, they must adopt a Vedic civilization. In a Vedic civilization, there is a full supply of all the necessities mentioned above.

The great scripture Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, compiled by Mahā-muni Vyāsadeva from four original verses, describes the most elevated and kindhearted devotees and completely rejects the cheating ways of materially motivated religiosity. It propounds the highest principle of eternal religion, which can factually mitigate the threefold miseries of a living being and award the highest benediction of full prosperity and knowledge. Those willing to hear the message of this scripture in a submissive attitude of service can at once capture the Supreme Lord in their hearts. Therefore there is no need for any scripture other than Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

The path of fruitive work (karma-kāṇḍa), even when decorated by religious ceremonies meant to elevate one’s material condition, is a cheating process because it can never enable one to gain relief from material existence and achieve the highest goal. A living entity perpetually struggles hard to rid himself of the pangs of material existence, but the path of fruitive work leads him to either temporary happiness or temporary distress in material existence. By pious fruitive work one is placed in a position where he can temporarily feel material happiness, whereas vicious activities lead him to a distressful position of material want and scarcity. However, even if one is put into the most perfect situation of material happiness, he cannot in that way become free from the pangs of birth, death, old age and disease. A materially happy person is therefore in need of the eternal relief that mundane religiosity in terms of fruitive work can never award.

The paths of the culture of knowledge (jñāna-mārga) and of mystic powers (yoga-mārga) are equally hazardous, for one does not know where one will go by following these uncertain methods. An empiric philosopher in search of spiritual knowledge may endeavor most laboriously for many, many births in mental speculation, but unless and until he reaches the stage of the purest quality of goodness—in other words, until he transcends the plane of material speculation—it is not possible for him to know that everything emanates from the Personality of Godhead Vāsudeva. His attachment to the impersonal feature of the Supreme Lord makes him unfit to rise to that transcendental stage of vasudeva understanding, and therefore because of his unclean state of mind he glides down again into material existence, even after having ascended to the highest stage of liberation. This falldown takes place due to his want of a locus standi in the service of the Supreme Lord.

Dear Sir,

Replying you registered /A.D. letter dated 22 December, 1971, I beg to inform you that the two rooms and entrance verandah has been in my possession since 1959, but I never saw you in possession of the upper portion of the house. Neither have I had any objection from you since that time. So far as I know, you are three saivites of the Radha Damodara Temple, namely your good self, Sri Nivendranath Bannerjee, of Karnapura, as well as Sri Gauracandra Goswami who is actually in the Temple. Sri Gauracandra Goswami and Sri Nivendranath Bannerjee combinedly gave to me possession of those two rooms and the verandah. So I have taken possession of those two rooms and the verandah from Saivites, paying to them regular rents. I do not care to know whether that portion belongs to you or somebody else. I have got regular receipts of the Radha Damodara saivites. Therefore, I am legally in possession of the two rooms and the verandah. Everyone in Vrindaban including the Chairman of the Municipal Board and most probably Sri Panchanan Goswami and all the others know that I am in possession of the two rooms and the verandah in Radha Damodara Temple.

But this time when I came from abroad, I saw that you have forcibly taken possession of the entrance of my verandah and converted it into a room, thus obstructing my entrance door. So I was just going to the courts for your unauthorized usurping of the entrance of the verandah to my room.

So it is very good news that you are going to the courts in this connection, as everything will be discussed there including how you could take unlawful possession of the entrance to the verandah. If you do not go to the court, then I shall be obliged to go to court in this connection, at your expense.

So, very simple method. Anyone can practice it. We are distributing this Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, the holy words, the holy name of God, and everyone is chanting. It is not difficult. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṇkīrtanam: "All glory to the chanting of this holy name." Why? Now, because it cleanses the heart. Ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ. Darpaṇa means mirror; mārjanaṁ means cleansing. So our heart is just like mirror. It requires to be cleansed, that's all. It is contaminated by the material dust.

I am citing Sanskrit verses from Vedic literature, because according to our concept of civilization we take Vedic hymns or Vedic versions as absolute truth, without any mistakes, without any cheating. The conditioned soul... Conditioned soul—one who is not liberated, one who is under the stringent laws of material nature; he is called conditioned soul—he cannot give us perfect knowledge, conditioned soul. Those conditioned souls means one who is identifying with this body, he is called conditioned soul. He is under the condition of this material nature, prakṛti. So such persons cannot be perfect.

For example the four kinds of defects, that every one of us, we commit mistakes. "To error is human." That is a fact. Everyone will admit. Yes. Nobody can say that "I never committed any mistake." Nobody can say. That is not possible. So long we have got this bodily concept of life, this is mistake. This bodily concept of life itself is mistake. I am not this body, but I am thinking I am this body. Actually I am not this body, but still I am thinking, "I am Indian," you are thinking you are American. This is mistake. The beginning is mistake.

So if you can commit mistake, how you can give perfect knowledge? Knowledge means must be perfect, without any mistake, without any illusion. Illusion..., illusion means to accept something for something, the same mistake. And then our imperfectness of the senses: we acquire knowledge, we gather knowledge by perception of this our material senses, but our material senses are imperfect. Just like we are very much proud of our eyes, so I can see under certain condition if there is... Just like if it is not fully lighted, I cannot see who was standing behind, but if there is sufficient light, I can see. Therefore my seeing power is dependent on the varieties of light.

So how you can say that whatever you see, it is perfect? I am seeing now things under certain condition; next moment I will see things under certain other condition. So as the condition changes, therefore my sight also changes in different ways. We have got different senses: our touch, our smell, so many things. All our senses are working under incompetency. Incompetency. So persons who have got incompetent senses, who is liable to commit mistake, who is illusioned, whatever knowledge he is giving that is cheating, because he has no perfect knowledge. So how we can accept knowledge from a person who is liable to so many defects of māyā? Try to understand.

Prabhupāda: Sex. Yes. Kim anyat kāma-haitukam ([[Vanisource:BG 16.8|BG 16.8]]). Kim anyat kāma-haitukam: "Except sex desire, where is the other cause of creation?" That is atheistic theory. Kim anyat kāma-haitukam. So all of a sudden two opposite parties become sexually inclined, and by chance there is pregnancy and there is production.

This is their theory. There is no plan. It is like this. Because they are creating like that, there is no plan. Then why there is...? Therefore they say, "It is legalized prostitution, marriage. There is no need of marriage."

Pradyumna: Oh.

Prabhupāda: "Why should we go under legal?"

Pradyumna: "Why should there be a plan when it comes..."

Prabhupāda: This is... This is their atheistic theory. But our Vedic civilization is, putrārthe kriyate bhārya putra-piṇḍa-prayojanam. Prayojanam. Piṇḍa, piṇḍa-dāna, offering piṇḍa by the son, is necessity, puṇyena narakāt trāyate, because the son delivers the forefathers from the hellish condition of life. There are so many plans, and they say, "Oh, there is no plan." Ignorance.

We say that there is necessity of a putra, or a son; therefore to have a son, a wife is necessary. Therefore wife is accepted. This is a plan. But they say that it is... "Whenever you feel, just like cats and dogs, sexually inclined, have sex." That's all. Where is plan?

This is difference between atheist and theist. They have no plan. Sex desire is necessity of the body we have, and all of a sudden there is pregnancy. Avoid. Try to avoid pregnancy by contraceptive. Or if it takes place by chance, that's all right. There is no question of plan.

These rubbish theories are going on, and they are getting Nobel Prize. They are educated. They are philosopher. John Lennon is a philosopher. (laughs) You see? This is going on. Ginsberg is a big man. George Harrison is a big man. You see? Eraṇḍāpi dhūmayate(?). When there is no tree, that, what is called? Castor tree, castor.

Devotee: Castor

Prabhupāda: Castor. Eraṇḍa. It doesn't become higher than this (gesticulates). "Oh, here is a big tree. Here is a big tree." Where there is no tree, that tree is big tree. So when the world is finished of all intelligent men, George Harrison is big man, George [sic] Ginsberg is big man, John Lennon is big man. Just see. According to Vedic civilization they are fourth-class men.

This dramatic art was being done by a professional fourth-class man. Nāṭaka, vidagadha(?). Just like Kṛṣṇa was taking bath with His friends, and there were some professional musician. They were playing music. And after taking bath, all the clothes were given to them.

Prabhupāda: Niṣkiñcana. Niṣkiñcana means… We are supposed to be niṣkiñcana. Those who are transcendentalist, eager(?) to go back home, back to Godhead, they should be niṣkiñcana. Niṣkiñcana means no more attraction for anything material. That is the… Ni means no; kiñcana means any, some, sufficient. That is called niṣkiñcana. So if you don't want anything, then you are now penniless, zero—no, you are not zero. Dhanam: you have got property. What is that property? Tapasya. Caitanya Mahāprabhu, when He was requested to please be benefited, by His very confidential devotees, that "The King wants to see You," to give His permission, He immediately said, "No, no. I cannot see King. I cannot do this."

In that connection He said one verse—perhaps you have read it—niṣkiñcanasya bhagavad bhajanonmukhasya ([[Vanisource:CC Madhya 11.8|CC Madhya 11.8]]). Those who are niṣkiñcana… Niṣkiñcana means that not attracted, but come to the platform of a devotee, brahma-bhūtaḥ. Just he gives up material attraction, niṣkiñcana. And after that there will be bhagavad bhajan, devotional service. Niṣkiñcanasya bhagavad bhajanonmukhasya. Unmukhasya means they were practically trying to raise, spiritually, on the platform of devotional service. That is niṣkiñcana. Pāraṁ paraṁ jigamiṣor bhava-sāgarasya. This ocean of nescience, and he is trying to go to the other side, (indistinct)-jala. This side material world, that side spiritual, the Kāraṇa…, Kāraṇa-jala, Causal Ocean. The Causal Ocean (indistinct), all these universes, they are floating in the Causal Ocean, coming out of the breathing of Mahā-Viṣṇu.

So we are in the Causal Ocean, big, big universe floating just like football, floating in the water. So we have to go the other side. So those who are anxious to go to the other side, Vaikuṇṭha side, pāraṁ paraṁ jigamiṣor bhava-sāgarasya, for them, viṣayiṇām sandarśa, to imitate the karmīs or to see the karmīs… Karmīs are always after (indistinct), viṣayiṇām sandarśanaṁ atha yoṣitāṁ ca, as well as to see woman naked. Because in this world there are two things very attractive: money and women. All people are after.

So Caitanya Mahāprabhu says those who are actually anxious to go back to home, back to Godhead, to the other side of the Causal Ocean, for them any desire for material possessions or woman, hā hanta hāhanta viṣa-bhakṣaṇato ’py asādhu, it will be dangerous than eating poison. So if you are actually serious to go back to home, back to Godhead, then be very, very, very cautious from these two things: possessing…, desire for possessions, woman and riches. Then we will be (indistinct). So our only possession is this tapasya, tapo divyaṁ. That will rectify, purify our existence.

So I am also very glad that in this distant place, Hong Kong, from India, you are training your children in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It is a very good sign. Their life will be very happy. So continue this process, try to understand the Kṛṣṇa philosophy, try to help this movement.

I may refer in this connection that Subhas Chandra Bose, you know Netajī, he organized his Indian National Army outside India, because in India he was unable to organize. The circumstances were so awkward, even Mahatma Gandhi would not allow him. That was his position. So you know very well how Subhas Chandra Bose came out of his country and organized the INA movement, and practically India's got independence due to Subhas Bose's INA movement, not Gandhi's non-cooperation movement. That is a fact.

So India has to give something to the world, and that is this Kṛṣṇa consciousness. This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is so nice it can solve all the problems of human society. So in India, even our Indians are prepared to help to propagate this movement all over the world. Our government is so nice that it will not allow. It will not allow. Not a single farthing is allowed to come out of India. So there are so many obstacles, but I am working in this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement single-handed, so it is very pleasing to me that you are taking so much interest. So continue to support this movement spread all over the world, and I am sure people will be benefited.

Prabhupāda: So this moon planet is one of the stars, illuminated. (indistinct) We are getting moonlight at night, but if the earth is also reflecting like that, what is the use of moonlight?

Indian Guest: But earth is reflected on moonlight. But one of the reason is that the sky is pure dark region, but if any objects come in the sky, and if moonlight falls on that object, then you can see the object, and that is due to the reflection of light that we get from that object. You see, what happens, if moonlight does not fall on the sun, then you wouldn't be able to see the sun at all. If sunlight doesn't fall on the sun, then we would not be able to see sun at all. Similarly, if moonlight or sunlight does not fall on the earth, then they would not be able to see earth from the sun…, earth from the moon. (break)

Prabhupāda: We have to leave all this material world.

Indian Guest: This is right.

Prabhupāda: We are not going to take birth again in this material world, either in the moon planet or sun planet, or this planet, or that, within this universe. Not only this universe—there are millions of universes. Nowhere we're going to come. We are not interested. (laughs)

So Caitanya Mahāprabhu is described by Rūpa Gosvāmī: namo mahā-vadānyāya kṛṣṇa-prema-pradāya te. Kṛṣṇāya: and they could detect also, Rūpa Gosvāmī, that "You are no other than Kṛṣṇa. Otherwise who could give kṛṣṇa-prema so easily? If Kṛṣṇa Himself can give it, so You are giving it." So Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu, never He disclosed Himself that He is Kṛṣṇa Himself.

Although He was detected many times by His expert devotees like Sanātana Gosvāmī, Rūpa Gosvāmī, but He never said that "I am Kṛṣṇa." He never said. Sometimes in Vṛndāvana some Vṛndāvana residents, they came to eulogize Him, that "Sir, You are Kṛṣṇa. We can understand." So He closed His ears like this: "Don't say like that. Oh, it is great offense to speak a common man as Kṛṣṇa." Yes.

So this is a teaching of Lord Caitanya, that to accept Kṛṣṇa as ordinary man is also offense, and similarly to accept an ordinary man as Kṛṣṇa, or God, that is also offense. He taught us that. That is going on nowadays. Any common man, he is declaring himself that "I am God," and people are accepting. This is offense. We should understand who is actually Kṛṣṇa from the direction of the śāstra, not that any bogus man comes before us and declares himself that "I am Kṛṣṇa and God," and we shall accept.

This is not good. But at the present moment there is no protection of the ruler. Everybody can go on like everything; there is no check. But this was not possible when there were kṣatriya kings in this country, in Bhārata-varṣa. Nobody could pretend as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Kṛṣṇa's time also, one king, he pretended himself that "I am Vāsudeva." So he was killed by Kṛṣṇa. So that is another story.

So our process, as recommended by Sūta Gosvāmī, that: vāsudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogaḥ prayojitaḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 1.2.7|SB 1.2.7]]). We should render devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vāsudeva: oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya ([[Vanisource:SB 1.1.1|SB 1.1.1]]). Then this process will elevate us. Janayaty āśu ([[Vanisource:SB 1.2.7|SB 1.2.7]]). Āśu means "very soon," "without delay."

Āśu vairāgyaṁ, that is required. Vairāgyaṁ: we must be detestful of this material world. We should not be very much optimistic. Pessimistic. But when you are spiritually advanced, then there is no difference between this material world and spiritual world. That is another stage. But in the beginning we should be detestful. Paraṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartate ([[Vanisource:BG 2.59|BG 2.59]]). We should try to find out the better position of spiritual life.

If we entangle ourself with this materialistic way of life, we can gratify our senses for the time being, but that will not help us. The śāstra condemns: "This kind of sense gratification is there in the life of dogs and hogs." So we should not waste our time simply by sense gratification like dogs and hogs. We should take to the principles of bhakti-yoga and make our life successful by developing real knowledge, jñāna, and become detached to this material world.

Mahat, this mahat-tattva, total material energy. So one can understand by taking lesson from different varieties of living entities coming out of this material nature. Just like there is one earth, but different varieties of plants are coming out, even without our endeavor.

Of course, in our garden we take care of sowing different types of seeds, but in a jungle you can go and see there are varieties of plants and trees; they are coming out of the earth and they are producing different varieties of fruits and flowers. So, "The variety is the mother of enjoyment." You cannot make it impersonal. Variety means each and every thing is a personal, individual being. That is variety.

As Kṛṣṇa has already explained, puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṁ ca ([[Vanisource:BG 7.9|BG 7.9]]). There are reservoir of different flavor within the earth, but according to the bīja, they are coming out differently. There is rose scent, there is lotus scent, there are varieties of scent—they are already within the earth. But our materialistic scientist, they cannot take out any flavor from the earth. They have to take the flavor from the flowers, not from the earth.

Yadi, yadi means "if" one does not develop an attachment to hear about God... This is the test, viṣvaksena-kathā.

God's another name, Kṛṣṇa's another name is Viṣvaksena. Viṣvaksena is situated in the stomach, and He helps your digestion. If Viṣvaksena does not help you in digesting, then you are forbidden to eat: not anymore. So Viṣvaksena. There are thousands and millions of names of God, and Viṣvaksena is one of the names. So viṣvaksena-kathāsu: if one does not become interested to hear about God… Just like Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, they are called kṛṣṇa-kathā.

Bhagavad-gītā is the kathā, or words, spoken by the Lord Himself. Therefore it is kṛṣṇa-kathā—kṛṣṇaḥ sva-kathāḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 1.2.17|SB 1.2.17]]), the words spoken by God Himself. Similarly, this Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is also kṛṣṇa-kathā. This is also kṛṣṇaḥ sva-kathāḥ. It is spoken, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is spoken about Kṛṣṇa—about Kṛṣṇa's activities, about Kṛṣṇa's birth, about Kṛṣṇa's appearance, disappearance, activities; about Kṛṣṇa's devotees. Therefore it is called Bhāgavatam: in relationship with Kṛṣṇa; everything in relationship with Kṛṣṇa.

So Sūta Gosvāmī says that you may execute your religious principle very nicely, but simply "I am Hindu," "I am Muhammadan," "I am Christian," "My religion is better; therefore your religion is bad, so I shall fight," this is not religion. The test is whether you are Hindu, whether you are Muslim, whether you are Christian or Jews or Buddhist, it doesn't matter. Whether you have developed your love for God—that is the test.

What is the loss? Suppose while you are drinking water, and as it is said in the Bhagavad-gītā, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya ([[Vanisource:BG 7.8|BG 7.8]]), that taste, that nice taste of water, is God. So if we remember, smaraṇaṁ... Smaraṇaṁ is one of the process of devotional service.

He is advaita. Advaita means He is not different from anything, because anything we see, that is energy of Kṛṣṇa: parasya brāhmaṇaḥ śakti tathaiva akhilaṁ jagat. In the Viṣṇu Purāna (1.22.52) it is said,

Although the sun globe is fourteen hundred times…, fourteen hundred thousand times bigger than this earth, still you can see that it is lying in one corner.

So this is Agni. We require heat and light; therefore Kṛṣṇa has given us the heat and light. So as we can see the sun globe is situated in one place, still its heat and light is distributed throughout the whole universe, similarly, Kṛṣṇa is living in His own abode, sva-dharma, but His energies are being distributed all over: ekāṁśena sthito jagat.

Formerly, great, great sages, they went to forest and Himalaya to meditate, just like Dhruva Mahārāja went. When five-years-old boy, in order to find out God, he went to the forest and meditated. Of course, he was successful, but at the present moment it is not possible to accept such kind of austerity. But therefore the śāstra gives us very short-cut austerity—chant Hare Kṛṣṇa:

A little austerity. A little austerity. We are asking our students to chant this Hare Kṛṣṇa, sixteen rounds at least—this much austerity. But Kali-yuga is so strong that even this sixteen rounds is also very difficult. So we are so much fallen, but still, although we are fallen, if we chant this mantra Hare Kṛṣṇa, as recommended by the śāstras: harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam... Just like a small child: he tries to walk, sometimes falls down, again he tries to stand up. But we must try to come to the perfectional point by chanting this Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra.

So the Sūta Gosvāmī is replying after hearing the question: munayaḥ—this is plural number, "all the sages," sādhu pṛṣṭo 'haṁ, "Oh, your question is very, very nice," sādhu, most, I mean to say, worshipable. Sādhu pṛṣṭo 'haṁ. munayaḥ sādhu pṛṣṭo 'haṁbhavadbhir loka-maṅgalam ([[Vanisource:SB 1.2.5|SB 1.2.5]]). "Your question about Kṛṣṇa, that after departure of Kṛṣṇa, where is now jñāna and dharma?" Dharma, jñāna. Now see, simply because it is related with Kṛṣṇa, Sūta Gosvāmī became so engladdened, that "Your question is very, very nice," sādhu pṛṣṭo. Why it is nice? Because loka-maṅgalam.

This Kṛṣṇa discussion is so nice that as soon as we begin it, and so long we discuss about Kṛṣṇa, it is loka-maṅgalam—the whole period is auspicious. At that time Yamarāja cannot touch you. The death, the time, the influence of time cannot touch you. If you go on in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then the influence of time cannot touch you.

How influence of time has touched us? We are eternal, but we have been under the clutches of birth and death. This is the influence of time. Not that time is changing, but the influence of time is changing. I am getting this body, another body, another body… This is influence of time. So if you are constantly in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, twenty-four hours, this influence of time cannot touch us. This is the secret.

So we recommend, therefore, our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, that in whichever position you may be, it doesn’t matter. Please try to chant this holy name: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.

But the paraṁ satyam, the Supreme Lord, He is not under the influence of any modes of material nature. Therefore it is expressed here, dhāmnā svena nirasta-kuhakaṁ: He is completely independent, and there is no influence of māyā. There is no influence. Nirasta-kuhakaṁ.

Here it is illusion. We are living under the influence of material nature, but we are thinking that we are independent. This is kuha, illusion. This is called māyā. And so long we do not understand this defect of our materialistic way of life, that is called defeat. Whatever we are doing, that is defeat. We are not conquering, but we are being defeated by the exigency of the material energy, which is explained in the Bhagavad-gītā: daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā ([[Vanisource:BG 7.14|BG 7.14]]).

So we are all under the influence of māyā, illusion. Ahaṁ mameti, janasya moho ayam ([[Vanisource:SB 5.5.8|SB 5.5.8]]). Ayam, this feature of our life: ahaṁ, "I am independent, and whatever I have created, that is mine," this is illusion. Janasya moho ayam. These are all explained in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam in different places. So our author of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Vyāsadeva, he says, "Just aim your objective to the Absolute Truth, satyaṁ paraṁ, not to the relative truth." Here everything is in relative truth, for the time, but it appears to be truth. But actually it is not truth. Śrīdhara Svāmī comments in this connection: satvanam savac svadu bhutendriya devata rupa amrisa satvam jasya sattvatoya mithyā savovi satvavat pratitayate.

Vyāsadeva says that He is abhijñaḥ: He is perfectly conversant, He is perfectly in knowledge, but svarāṭ. Janmādy asya yato 'nvayād itarataś cārtheṣv abhijñaḥ svarāṭ. Svarāṭ means "completely independent." There is no need of taking knowledge from others. That is God. Not that I am now in ignorance. The Māyāvādī theory is that "I am now in darkness under the clutches of māyā, and when māyā is finished, then I am God." The answer is if you are actually God, how you are captured by māyā? Then māyā is greater than you. But it is understood that God is great, nobody can be greater than God; so if māyā captures God, then māyā is greater than God.

So this theory is not very intelligent theory, that God has become captured by māyā. No. Māyā can capture this small god, just like we are. As I explained yesterday, īśvara. Īśvara means controller. So every one of us, somehow or other, we are controller. At least we control my…, our children, wife, at home. So in that sense everyone is controller. But śāstra says that īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ (Bs. 5.1): the supreme controller is Kṛṣṇa. He has no controller. I am controller, but when I go to my office, immediately I find my boss a controller. Although I am very strong controller on my children or on my wife or servant—I am very strict man—but as soon as I go to my office, immediately I am controlled by my boss. That is my position.

So I am not absolute controller. The absolute controller means who is not controlled by anyone else. He is never controlled by māyā. That is absolute controller. How God can be controlled by māyā? Therefore this Vedic term is used here, svarāṭ. He is not controlled. Īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ (Bs. 5.1), svarāṭ. And Kṛṣṇa also says in the Bhagavad-gītā, mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat ([[Vanisource:BG 7.7|BG 7.7]]): "There is no other controller above Me."

And Kṛṣṇa, when He was present, He was not controlled by anyone. Even if we suppose that Rādhārāṇī controls Kṛṣṇa, but actually He was not even controlled by Rādhārāṇī. That we have seen. When Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana, all the gopīs, they would not allow Him to go away to Mathurā. But still He did not…, Kṛṣṇa did not care for them; He left Vṛndāvana. So He is not controlled by anyone. Svarāṭ: fully independent.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is very much interested in brahmanical civilization and cow, brahmaṇya-devāya go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.19.65). Why specifically cow and brāhmaṇa is mentioned? This means that unless there is this varṇāśrama system in any civilization and there is no cow protection, that is not human civilization.

Namo brahmaṇya-devāya go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca: the first consideration is brahminical culture and protection of the cow. Because cow protection is especially mentioned, and brahminical culture, the two things are meant for advancing spiritual consciousness. Because one has to go, transcend, even brahminical culture, sattva-guṇa. And to support the brahminical culture, cow protection is essential.

Without milk you cannot develop the finer tissues of your brain, and without developing the finer tissues of brain it is not possible to understand what is God, what we are, what is our relationship, with blunt..., alpa-medhasām. It is mentioned in the Bhagavad-gītā, tad bhavaty alpa-medhasām ([[Vanisource:BG 7.23|BG 7.23]]): a little brain substance cannot help one to advance in spiritual consciousness.

Therefore this cow protection and expansion of brahminical culture is essential throughout the whole world. But we should not think that brahminical culture is only limited within India. No. Kṛṣṇa says, cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ ([[Vanisource:BG 4.13|BG 4.13]]). What is created by Kṛṣṇa, or God, that is not for a particular country or particular nation. It is meant for everyone. Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, yei kṛṣṇa-tattva-vettā, sei "guru" haya ([[Vanisource:CC Madhya 8.128|CC Madhya 8.128]]).

So this brahminical culture, what we are spreading, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, is brahminical culture. So these boys and those who are initiated, they are offered the sacred thread. Not immediately. Just like there are two students present here: one will be given the hari-nāma initiation, and the other will be given sacred thread ceremony. The idea is that we invite everyone; it doesn’t matter where he is born, because this is universal. Kṛṣṇa claimed, sarva-yoniṣu kaunteya ([[Vanisource:BG 14.4|BG 14.4]]), "In any species of life, whoever there is, I am the seed-giving father," ahaṁ bīja-pradaḥ pita. In another place Kṛṣṇa said that māṁ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye 'pi syuḥ pāpa-yonayaḥ ([[Vanisource:BG 9.32|BG 9.32]]). We may consider somebody as pāpa-yoni, but Kṛṣṇa says that "If he takes shelter of Me," te 'pi yānti parāṁ gatim.

If you understand Kṛṣṇa, then after leaving this body no more transmigration to another material body. Punar janma... Janma, birth, takes place of this material body, not of the soul. The soul, na jāyate na mriyate vā: the soul never dies or takes birth. The so-called birth is the birth of this body. Therefore anyone who understands Kṛṣṇa, he does not take anymore this material body, tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti. Then where does he go? Because soul is eternal, I am eternal, you are eternal. We are passing through different phases of material body. So by understanding Kṛṣṇa, tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma: no more material birth. Then where does he go? Mām eti: he goes back to home, back to Godhead.

Prabhupāda: Prahlāda Mahārāja is considering himself to be unfit for worshiping the Lord. He says, kiṁ toṣṭum arhati sa me harir ugra-jāteḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 7.9.8|SB 7.9.8]]). Ugra-jāteḥ, as I was speaking yesterday, that chili, chili caste, those who are very much in fallen condition by quality. His quality…, it is not that one is fallen in quality, he cannot be raised. It is not like that. The practical example is that our European-American students, actually they were fallen in quality. They were in the modes of ignorance and passion, the fallen quality. But they have been raised.

So even one is in fallen condition or in fallen quality, he can be raised. Just like Prahlāda Mahārāja. Prahlāda Mahārāja is considering himself that "I am fallen. I am born of a father who is fallen," ugra-jāteḥ. But he is actually not fallen, because he is a devotee. He is not fallen. Just like Haridāsa Ṭhākura. Haridāsa Ṭhākura was born in Muhammadan family. But these so-called brāhmaṇas, they thought that he is fallen. But actually he was not fallen. Why? Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted him as the greatest of all chanter, nāmācārya. He was the ācārya of spreading hari-nāma, ideal symbol, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra three lakhs' time, three hundred thousand time. Practically whole day and night, twenty-four hours, he was chanting, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.

So he was not fallen—but he considered himself as fallen. He was not entering the Jagannātha temple. He was living outside. Why he? Even Sanātana Gosvāmī, because he mixed with the Muhammadan emperors… His friends, his master, were the big, big Muhammadan kings and nawabs. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu reclaimed him. The brāhmaṇa society rejected, outcasted him, that "You have accepted…" (break) …also changed his name, Dabira Khāsa. His Hindu name was changed. But Caitanya Mahāprabhu claimed him, and they became gosvāmī. Vande rūpa-sanātanau raghu-yugau śrī-jīva-gopālakau (Śrī Śrī Ṣaḍ-gosvāmy-aṣṭaka).

This is Caitanya Mahāprabhu's movement. All Vaiṣṇava movement is like that. There is no consideration of fallen or high. No. Anyone. Yei kṛṣṇa-tattva-vettā, sei 'guru' haya ([[Vanisource:CC Madhya 8.128|CC Madhya 8.128]]), Caitanya Mahāprabhu said. "Anyone who knows the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he is guru. It doesn’t matter by birth what he is." He may be a brāhmaṇa, he may be a śūdra, he may be a householder, gṛhasta, or he may be a sannyāsī. Because Kṛṣṇa consciousness is transcendental to this bodily concept of life.

Prabhupāda: Good karma means what are prescribed in the Vedas. The... Specifically, it is prescribed that one should perform yajña. Yajña means to act for satisfaction of Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the Bhagavad-gītā it is said...

Prabhupāda: No. So good karma means performance of the yajñas as they are prescribed in the Vedic literature. And this purpose of this yajña is to satisfy the Supreme Lord. Just like good citizen means one who satisfies the government. Law-abiding. Good citizen. Similarly, good karma means who satisfies Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Lord.

Unfortunately, the modern civilization, they do not know what is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and what to speak of satisfying Him. They do not know. They are simply busy in material activities. Therefore, all of them are doing only bad karma, and therefore they are suffering. They are blind men and leading some other blind men. And both of them are expanding the path to hell by bad karma.

Bad karma, you suffer. That is very easy to understand. If you do something criminal, you'll suffer. If you do something benevolent for the state, for the people, then you are rewarded, you are recognized, you are given title. Sometimes shot. This is good and bad karma. So... (microphone movement sounds) ...some material happiness, and bad karma means you suffer from material distress. By good karma you get birth in good family, janma. You get riches, good money. Then you become learned scholar, you become beautiful also.

Prabhupāda: Ladies and gentlemen I thank you very much for your coming here and participating in this great Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. This is the religion of the religions, there are hundreds and thousands of religious principles all over the world but this is the basic principle of religion. Religion means to understand God that is the short description of religion. Because from the śāstra's we understand that religion is the codes and laws of the Lord or God, dharmaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam ([[Vanisource:SB 6.3.19|SB 6.3.19]]).

You cannot manufacture religion, religion is the given codes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I have several times explained this that the law cannot be manufactured by any private person. Law is given by the state by the King, what the King says or the state orders that is law. Just like on the road when you drive your car you have to keep left, that is the given law of the state. Similarly in America the car is kept on the right, so you cannot say that somewhere it is said keep right and somewhere it is said keep left--which one is right? Which one was the right direction? The right direction is the word of the state, similarly religion means what is spoken by the Lord that is religion.

And this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is therefore the religion of the religions. Just like philosophy is called as the science of the sciences, similarly the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is the religion of the religions. Now take for example, the Hindu religion or the Christian religion or the Muslim religion. What is the ultimate goal? Love of Godhead, Lord Jesus Christ he also preached how to love God. The Mohammedan religion also preaches to realise the Supreme Lord, Allah-u-akbar. In Buddha religion they primarily they are atheist but Lord Buddha is incarnation of Kṛṣṇa therefore it is said in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam that God, Kṛṣṇa, appeared as Lord Buddha to cheat the atheists.

The atheist class they did not believe in God but Lord Buddha came before them He said, “yes there is no God, that's right but whatever I say you take it.” So the atheist class took it, "yes whatever You say we shall take it." But the atheist did not know that He is the incarnation of God. Therefore in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam it is said, sammohāya sura-dviṣām ([[Vanisource:SB 1.3.24|SB 1.3.24]]), sammohāya sura-dviṣām, sura-dviṣām—means the atheist class. Sammohāya—just to bewildered them, you don’t believe in God, that's all right but you take My words, ahimsa parama-dharma, don’t kill animals. Lord Buddha appeared, sadaya-hṛdaya-darśita-paśu-ghātam, He was... The Lord became very much compassionate when people in the name of religion in the name of Vedas were much addicted to killing of animals.

So Śrī Rāmānujācāryapāda he has defined that the persons who are abiding by the orders of the Lord he is deva or demigod and persons who do not abide by the orders of God they are called asura. So Prahlāda Mahārāja—it is not that asuras will beget children only asuras, for example in Europe and America practically they are within the classification of asuras but they have got many children like Prahlāda and we have collected them.

These boys and girls although their father are atheist by nature they have come out very theist, high class God conscious students. So there is no question of disappointment if we take to the process the asuras can be changed into suras or devatā. Caṇḍālo 'pi dvija-śreṣṭhā hari-bhakti-parāyaṇaḥ, according to our Vedic system there are classification of brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra and less than the śūdras they are called caṇḍālas or pañcamas or (indistinct) there are so many names. But it is not that because one is born in caṇḍālas family he cannot be elevated that is not the fact. Kṛṣṇa in the Bhagavad-gītā says;

The thing is one has to take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness then it doesn’t matter where he is born. He can be elevated to the highest position of transcendental life. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam also confirms this when Parīkṣit Mahārāja was hearing from Śukadeva Gosvāmī he stated;

parātma, niṣṭhā, adhyā, sitāṁ, pūrva, tamair, mahadbhiḥ; ahaṁ, tariṣyāmi, duranta, pāraṁ, tamo, mukunda, aṅghri, niṣe, vayaiva. etāṁ, sam āsthāya, parātma, niṣṭhām, adhyāsitāṁ, pūrva, tamair, mahadbhiḥ; ahaṁ, tariṣyāmi, duranta, pāraṁ, tamo, mukundāṅghri, niṣe, vayaiva. etāṁ, sam āsthāya, parātma, niṣṭhām, adhyāsitāṁ, pūrva, tamair, mahadbhiḥ, ahaṁ, tariṣyāmi, duranta, pāraṁ, mukunda, aṅghri, niṣe, vayaiva.

The meaning of this verse is that I am just now following the footsteps of previous ācāryas. To accept sannyāsa so that I can completely devote myself in the service of Mukunda. Mukunda means one who can give liberation. Mukti muk means mukti liberation. So Kṛṣṇa's name is Mukunda. He can give actually liberation otherwise there is no question of liberation.

To accept the (indistinct). This mantra was previously chanted by Lord Caitanya when He took sannyāsa. Therefore we Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava's when we accept sannyāsa we follow the footsteps of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. The narration is in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta that Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu when he completed his twenty fourth year of age, cabbiśa vatsara-śeṣa yei māgha-māsa ([[Vanisource:CC Madhya 3.3|CC Madhya 3.3]]). That month, month was also the same, māgha-māsa this month is going now. When He completed his 24th year on the month of māgha this January and February. In that śukla-pakṣe in the moonlight He accepted sannyāsa. So after accepting sannyāsa, sannyāsa kari' premāveśe calilā vṛndāvana. After accepting sannyāsa He immediately left his country and went towards Vṛndāvana.

Vṛndāvana means where Lord Kṛṣṇa lives. Lord Kṛṣṇa lives everywhere but His specific place is Vṛndāvana. So anyone who is engaged in the service of the Lord anywhere he goes that is Vṛndāvana, rāḍha-deśe tina dina karilā bhramaṇa ([[Vanisource:CC Madhya 3.4|CC Madhya 3.4]]). But He travelled for three days in Bengal, rāḍha-deśe. Rāḍha-deśe means where the Ganges river is not flowing. That is called rāḍha-deśe.

So you get this śloka in your heart and where ever you go you chant this mantra and remember Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu wanted that He save;

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu He, He was a very high class educated brāhmaṇa very beautiful to look at. He had his young wife sixteen years old, His affectionate mother but He left everything for preaching this Kṛṣṇa Consciousness movement all over the world. Therefore those who follow strictly the footsteps of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu he will be blessed by Him. It was the duty of the Indians because He said, bhārata-bhūmite manuṣya-janma haila yāra’.

Anyone who has taken his birth as human being in the land of Bhārata-varṣa. Janma sārthaka kari' kara para-upakāra, so it was the duty of the Indians to take such sannyāsa and preach the cult of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu all over the world. Unfortunately they are packed up in a limited space. I am so much obliged to you. That you American boys you are taking sannyāsa and preaching the cult of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu all over the world. Actually everyone is suffering within this material world due to ignorance. Every day we see that a person without knowledge commits some criminal act and is later arrested and punished, despite the fact that he actually may not have been conscious of his sinful activity. Such ignorance prevails throughout the world. People do not consider how they are risking their lives in an attempt to have illicit sex life, kill animals to satisfy their tongue, enjoy intoxication and gamble. It is very regrettable that the leaders of the world do not know of the effects of these sinful activities. They are instead taking things very easily and are succeeding in making the ocean of nescience wider and wider.

Opposed to such ignorance, full knowledge is the greatest achievement within this material world. We can practically see that one who has sufficient knowledge is saved from many dangerous pitfalls in life. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā ([[Vanisource:BG 7.19|BG 7.19]]), bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate: "When one actually becomes wise, he surrenders unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead." Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ: "Such a great soul is very rarely to be found."

This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is determined to open wide the eyes of the so-called leaders, who are full of ignorance, and thus save them from the many pitfalls and dangerous conditions of life. The greatest danger is the danger of getting a body lower than that of a human being. It was with great difficulty that we attained this human form of life just to take advantage of this body and reestablish our relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda. Lord Śiva advises, however, that those who take advantage of his prayers will very soon become devotees of Lord Vāsudeva and thus will be able to cross the ocean of nescience and make life perfect.

Such is the punishment for illicit sex.

According to Vedic principles, the wife of another man is considered one's mother, and sexual relations are strictly forbidden with one's mother, sister and daughter. If one indulges in illicit sexual relations with another man's wife, that activity is considered identical with having sex with one's mother. This act is most sinful. The same principle holds for a woman also; if she enjoys sex with a man other than her husband, the act is tantamount to having sexual relations with her father or son. Illicit sex life is always forbidden, and any man or woman who indulges in it is punished in the manner described in this verse.

Vrindaban

My dear Achyutananda,

Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter from Vrindaban dated July 29, 1972 and I have noted the contents carefully. Now you please remain there and jointly help Gurudasa and the other two Indian boys and hold as much as you can kirtana and discourses widely all over the Vrindaban village. Take help from Visvambhara Goswami and the other good Godbrothers and make our presence in Vrindaban very impressive and prestigious, and that will by the greatest service. That is my advice. Keep your prestige very nicely there in Vrindaban. Follow the principle of leading sankirtana party every day from Radha Damodara Mandir to our new place in Raman Reti. And wherever possible hold kirtana and speak in Bengali and English. If you are able to have such engagement from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. daily, do that.

So far the program with Cox and Kings Travel Agency, take the help of Visvambhara Goswami and others and create this program very enthusiastically, I am very much in favor of it. One thing is, there has not been very much substantial concrete work done in the last few months in Vrindaban in the matter of our new building there. So I have asked Tamala Krishna Goswami to come there with one engineer and begin the work vigorously. Now you give him all assistance and help me get started on this great project immediately. I shall be coming to India sometimes in October and I expect to see some tangible progress there in Vrindaban. That is our real business. If we are there so many months and we cannot do anything, simply eat and sleep and fight amongst ourselves, then where is our credit? Our credit will be when the people see our nice building rising daily, just like in Mayapur, with 100 men working day and night. That is the American style. If you want to honor me, you will do like this and then I can truly be called the guru of the Americans. Otherwise, it is simply a dishonor to me.

So far Yamuna is concerned, I never doubted once her impeccable character, simply I wanted to find out the actual position. There is a saying in Bengali, that whenever there is scandalous talk, there is something to it, so we must be careful always to avoid even what may be mistaken by others for scandalous situation. You know how the things are taken in India so be yourself very careful to always avoid these things and instruct others how to do it also. I am forwarding your reply to Lalitananda Bon Maharaja to ISKCON Press in New York for publishing in our BTG.

Prabhupāda: So we shall increase. You can increase the number. So according to vacant position, how many, it may be fifteen?

Devotee: Thirteen.

Prabhupāda: Why not fifteen, make fifteen?

Devotee: We are thinking of (indistinct).

Prabhupāda: Huh?

Devotee: We are thinking of (indistinct).

Prabhupāda: Or anyone, you can do. Then you have to reorganize the zones, fifteen zones.

Rūpānuga: This is much better if we're actually expanding.

Prabhupāda: Yes, we must expand, we must expand. Now the framework of expansion is done by me, but this, they should be solidified. Just like your skyscraper building. The framework is done then they are made nicely air-conditioned and covered by glass (indistinct). It makes a nice house. Similarly, so far the framework is done. I have done with your help. Now we have to push this movement. It is very important movement. It is not a farce. It is actually for the benefit of the human society. They are kept in darkness about God. And we are delivering God, "Here is God." So that must be pushed. What is your opinion?

Devotee: Jaya!

Prabhupāda: They are kept in darkness about God. Somebody is speaking, saying "God is dead." Some is (saying), "God is impersonal. There is not God. I am God, you are God," all this nonsense. Here is God. We have to push this. What do you think, Hayagrīva Prabhu? So, Hayagrīva Prabhu is taking charge of pushing this movement by help in editorial work. So that is most important because we are distributing books. Our writing will be gospel.

Devotee: (indistinct).

Prabhupāda: We have to edit in such a way, present our literature in such a way that it will be gospel truth.

Devotee: Oh!

Prabhupāda: Authorized. That people will refer to our books. So we have to very cautiously print our literatures. It is not ordinary literature, fiction, or something, story. Just like Bhagavad-gītā and Bhāgavata. They are not ordinary. literature. Without any four defects of human frailties. Bhrama, pramāda, vipralipsa, also... We are following those literatures. So our writing should be so authorized that in future one may not find any fault, contradiction. We shall have to, cautiously. The ideas are given there now... In future of course, it requires that we shall increase (indistinct). But for the present, we have to push on this movement with positive, I mean to say, conviction, that here is God. God is neither dead, nor every one of you is God, nor is He imperson. God is a person and we give you His name, address, father's name, activities. Here is God. So, we have to (indistinct). So if you have got any doubt about it, then you cannot do it. If you have got any doubt that whether Kṛṣṇa is positive God or (indistinct) then you cannot do it. That is the first qualification. If you are yourself not convinced, how you can convince others? This is our propaganda. This is our mission. (indistinct). Whether you are all convinced on this point? That here is positive God. What is your opinion? So far I am concerned, I have no opinion, convinced. (laughter). Therefore, I am pushing on. It is a fact. I am pushing on because I am pushing on fact, not fiction. That much I am personally convinced. Whenever there is somebody says, "You believe". "No, I don't believe, it is fact." Any press reporter, that press reporter.

Devotee: Hm.

Prabhupāda: It is not the question I believe and don't believe, it is a fact. God is there—you believe or not believe—but God must be there. Your believing, not believing, it doesn't matter. If I don't believe there is no president, it does not mean there will be no president. There must be president. I do not know who is president. (indistinct) So people are in misconception that there is no God, God is dead, I am God, you are God, God is not person, so many God theories. But we have no theory, we have got a positive presentation, "Here is God." With that conviction we have to push on. So you must be prepared in that way. There will be so many questions, so many opposing elements. You have to face them by your arguments, by your knowledge. This is required. At least we must have faith in that way. We have to push on. This is the fact. We are Brahmā sampradāya, Lord Brahmā's sampradāya. So, Brahmā sampradāya, Lord Brahmā is giving. Just like last evening we were reading about Brahmā's thought. He is posing, "Yes, here is, You are God." Although He was child, "He appears to be a child, but You are God." That is Brahmā (indistinct). He is giving support on that point. So if you follow Brahmā then there is no question, here is God. And he writes in his saṁhitā,

: isvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
: sat-cid-ānanda vigrahaḥ
: anādir ādir govindaḥ
: sarva-käraëa-käraëam
: [Bs. 5.1]

Here is the God. And Kṛṣṇa says, ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ [Bg. 10.8]. Mattaḥ parataraṁ nasti. (indistinct). "There is no more superior truth than Me, I am the origin of everthing." Ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate. Everything comes from Him. The Vedānta says, janmādy asya yataḥ [SB 1.1.1], so Absolute Truth is there, which is the original source of everything." So, Kṛṣṇa says, "I am the original source of everything." The Vedānta says the Absolute Truth means the original source of everything. Brahmā confirms it and you must also understand (indistinct). So you must spread your conviction by your literature, by your argument, by your preaching, by facing opposing elements. That is the process. What do you think, Kīrtanānanda Mahārāja?

Kīrtanānanda: (indistinct)

Prabhupāda: That is the point. Our advancement means the more we meet opposing elements, "Oh, that is alright." Therefore preacher is the best devotee because he is a soldier. Just like government gives all importance to the fighting soldier. When there is war, all comforts for the soldier first, then the civil people. There was no butter in Germany, there was no butter. But the soldiers were profusely supplied with butter. And sometimes when the enemy attacks, they throw it away and go away and go to another shelter and still there is butter. That my Godbrother (indistinct) when he first came to India I asked him that, "I heard that you German people are very robust, stout and strong, why you are so thin and weak?" So he replied me in this way that, "In my childhood when I was eight years old weekly I was getting butter for (indistinct)". Everything was controlled, even for children. But the soldiers, there was no control. So that is, my point is, that those who are soldiers, fighting on behalf of Kṛṣṇa, they are brave soldiers. Na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ [Bg. 18.69]. Kṛṣṇa says, "Nobody is dearer than him who is in the process of preaching this Bhagavad-gītā." So, in order to become very dear to Kṛṣṇa... Actually that is the position. So we must preach in that way—by our literature, by our magazine, by our books, by our speech, by our arrangements. Of course, very peacefully, we are not very (indistinct), becoming violent (indistinct). But by argument, by words, by our methods, by our preaching, we have to convince. So selected fifteen men, not twelve (indistinct). It may increase more. Now we have got very many centers, but the duty is very responsible. So as, so far the center is concerned, the local president is (indistinct) man. The GBC can supervise that things are going on. The first management is that each and every member in the temple is chanting sixteen rounds regularly and following the regulations, that's all. Otherwise we have no... That is our spiritual strength. That must be executed. Haridāsa Ṭhākura, such exalted personality, such advanced, still he is numerical counting even up to the point of his death. Therefore he was given the nāmācārya, because so rigid (indistinct). Even at the time of his death, Lord Caitanya requested, "Now you can minimize." "No sir, I cannot minimize." And what is the number? 300,000. These are the examples. (indistinct ) Sometimes... But the regulation is that if one day you cannot finish, you have to finish on the next day. But sixteen rounds is not very large number, the lowest. The lowest in India is twenty-five(?). Here sixteen rounds, twenty-five, not even twenty-five. So the president, local president, must see that the members are chanting. So this way the institution will be managed, then it will make progress. That is our spiritual strength—to observe the regulative principles and at least chant sixteen rounds. Then you do other things. This is the biggest institution of spiritual activities so everyone of us should be spiritually strong. Otherwise, superficially if we want to manage, it will not be possible. (indistinct).

: anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ
: jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam
: ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-
: śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā
: [Brs. 1.1.11]

Ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanam, favorably. Otherwise, it will go to the category of anyābhilāṣitā, material desire-jñāna, karma, yoga, (indistinct). And bhakti is so pure that it has nothing to do with material activities or speculative, or mystic yoga, it has nothing to do. Just like gopīs. Anyā... They had nothing to do with all this nonsense, karma, jñāna, yoga. They are neither yogīs, nor very learned scholar, Vedāntist, nor very good businessmen, economist, simple boys and girls. But their devotion is exalted. Because they did not know anything beyond Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is their love(?). Never mind to know that Kṛṣṇa is God or not, it doesn't matter. Then they don't, they didn't care for God also. Gopīs, when they say Nārāyaṇa, "Oh, He's Nārāyaṇa." (laughter) (indistinct) Nārāyaṇa, they have nothing to do with Him. They are searching after Kṛṣṇa and when Kṛṣṇa presented Himself as Nārāyaṇa, four-handed, they neglected. And before Rādhārāṇī, He could not remain as Nārāyaṇa. Automatically He handed (indistinct). (laughter) Hands are folded. So our idea is Vṛndāvana. So our love for Kṛṣṇa should be so strong that we don't care for anything. But for preaching if somebody challenges, yes, we are prepared to talk. That is authority. That is uttama-adhikārī. His love is Kṛṣṇa, enormous, but not sentiment. If anyone wants to talk with him, "Yes, come on," That is uttama-adhikārī, mahā-bhāgavata. So this is the position. Now something is in your hand—Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That was my plan that I shall carry this baggage and give it to the Americans and they will distribute. That was my plan, therefore I came to America. So now you are so many boys, young boys, you have understood. So do it and give me relief. I remain in the background. Let me finish my Bhāgavata Purāṇa and those who are assisting in the writing, I'll be there (indistinct). That this institution, ISKCON will give to the world so many valuable jewels. There is no comparison. That you will have to see, (indistinct). Already they are appreciating on account of (indistinct). The paper, what is that paper...

Devotee: Which one?

Prabhupāda: Sun Times?

Devotee: Los Angeles Times.

Prabhupāda: Maybe. They are not (indistinct)

Prabhupāda: They are serious. They have got, they have got (indistinct). Our seriousness will be proved when our books and (indistinct) around thinking men, scholars. Prabhupāda: Niṣkiñcanasya. One who has decided that "This world is useless. I have to take birth repeatedly and accept different types of bodies and suffer." Body means... Those who have understood this fact and disgusted, so bhakti line is for them. One who has the tendency to enjoy this material world, and they are taking advantage of God, "Give me good wife, give me good work, good meal, good enjoyment," they are not in the bhakti line. They are in the very nascent stage.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Nescient stage?

Prabhupāda: Lower stage. Vairāgya-vidyā-nija-bhakti-yogam [Cc. Madhya 6.254]. That... There is one verse written by Sarvabhauma

Bhaṭṭācārya. What page I don't... Śikṣārtham. The bhakti-yoga, nija-bhakti-yoga... Bhakti-yoga means devotion to Kṛṣṇa. And that is vairāgya-vidyā, how to learn, renounce this world. Otherwise why Caitanya Mahāprabhu gave up His gṛhastha life? He's the same person. Why Rūpa Gosvāmī gave up their ministership? By their personal behavior they are showing this is not required. This is vairāgya-vidyā. So under the circumstances, those who have no vairāgya, they cannot live in the temple. They are taking advantage of the temple facilities for their sense enjoyment. Do you understand?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, I do.

Prabhupāda: So that should be stopped. So to live with wife, together as a gṛhastha, and enjoy gṛhastha life, at the same time to live in temple, this should be discouraged. Temple is meant for brahmacārī and sannyāsī, our, mainly, not for gṛhastha, because they have got inclination to enjoy. To live with wife means enjoyment. They'll have sex. This should be discouraged. But one who is absolutely required, they also cannot be allowed to live together. It is badly done(?). Suppose if one is gṛhastha, he is in devotional service, but he has no money to look after his wife. In that case the wife can live in the temple but separately with women, not together. Together living is very disturbing. It is not at all recommended. Give this point. At least, this should not be encouraged.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Generally in our temples, within the temple building no gṛhasthas live together, but in the temple compound, that is to say, around the temple, there may be other buildings. There they live together. But it's...

Prabhupāda: No, I am speaking, within the temple.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I think practically all over the society that has been stopped, the gṛhastha living together with wife. I don't think there's any case like that. But in the adjoining buildings they might be...

Prabhupāda: Adjoining buildings... But the temple should not provide them with salary to enjoy their life. That is same thing.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Generally the temples are providing them with apartments, like that.

Prabhupāda: But that is temple.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah.

Prabhupāda: Just like we have got so many tenants. They are living in their own. But they have no connection with the temple, neither the temple is paying them or... No, they are earning their own way.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: In other words, if the temple provides an apartment, it's the same as paying a salary.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: In other words, giving an apartment is the same thing as providing a salary.

Prabhupāda: All right, apartment can be... But what is this? They are given high salary. Because his service is essential—"All right, you take apartment."

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: But not...

Prabhupāda: You take prasādam. But why salary? Where is the question of salary? Where is vairāgya, renouncement? So in all circumstances the salary process should be stopped. One who wants salary, he can work outside.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Actually, even if you don't give a salary, if you give an apartment and you give food and you give all these other things for someone to maintain his household life...

Prabhupāda: Because his service is essential.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: But that has to be determined very strictly.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Yes. Whether his service is absolutely required? So you give him.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: That is the factor. That point must be clearly acknowledged.

Prabhupāda: Hm hm. So he's trying to practice... Because sevonmukhe, if he gives service, then gradually he'll renounce. Sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ [Brs. 1.2.234]. God realization means service. The more you give service to the Lord, the more you become advanced in devotional... So one who is giving service, dedicated life, so maybe... But no salary. They may live in the temple, woman separate, man separate.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: They're... But the actual thing is that they're being, living together in an apartment, and the temple is paying for that apartment. They're not living separately in the temple. They're being...

Prabhupāda: That is to be discouraged. What do you think?

Girirāja: I agree.

Prabhupāda: In Los Angeles it is very freely going on. In the name of Vaiṣṇavism they are drawing salary, living comfortably, having sense enjoyment. This is not good, not at all. So you all high officers, you think over it and do the needful.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Vairāgya should be cultivated.

Prabhupāda: Vairāgya... Caitanya Mahāprabhu says clearly that niṣkiñcanasya bhagavad-bhajanonmukhasya. The bhagavad-bhajana, to become devotee of the Lord, means he's disgusted with this material world. For him, bhagavad-bhajana. Just like if I become disgusted with something, I require some change, similarly, bhagavad-bhajana is for him who is absolutely disgusted with this material world. And anyone who has got little interest in material enjoyment, he's not fit for bhagavad-bhajana. He'll have to accept again this material body, either he becomes Brahmā or becomes an ant in the stool, according to his karma. Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur deha-upapattaye [SB 3.31.1]. He'll have to develop certain type of body according to his desire of enjoyment. This is nature's law. Then where is the question of going back to home, back to Godhead? Why so many varieties of life? There is Brahmā, and there is ant in the stool. So vairāgya-vidyā-nija... Vāsudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogaḥ prayojitaḥ [SB 1.2.7], janayaty āśu vairāgyam. And vairāgyam means jñānam ca. When one is in full knowledge that "To remain in this material world is useless for me"—jñānam—"I am simply wasting my time by repetition of birth and death," then he can have vairāgya. "Stop this!" If this sense is not awakened, there is no bhakti. It is not so easy. Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati na kāṅkṣati [Bg. 18.54]. That is vairāgya. So vairāgya-vidyā... Otherwise why big, big persons, they renounced everything? Bharata Mahārāja, young man, the emperor of the whole world, gave up everything. Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally teaches, young man, good, beautiful wife, young wife, so affectionate mother, so much honor in the society, Nimāi Paṇḍita, so beautiful body... Tyaktvā sudustyaja-surepsita-rājya-lakṣmīm [SB 11.5.34]. Surepsita. Caitanya Mahāprabhu's position was, even the demigods, they desired such family life. But He still gave up. That is teaching. Therefore Sarvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya says, vairāgya-vidyā-nija-bhak..., śikṣārtham: "to teach others." He understood that in order to teach others vairāgya-vidyā... He is the Supreme Person. Vairāgya-vidyā-nija-bhakti-yoga-śikṣārtham ekaḥ purāṇa-puruṣaḥ: [Cc. Madhya 6.254] "That He was, Supreme Lord. Now He has appeared as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya."Śarīra-dhārī: "He has accepted one body as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya." So these things should be stopped, that they should live comfortably with husband and wife, children, and take salary from the... You decide. This is not to our... Besides that, in our BBT it is clearly written that "Fifty percent for printing book, and fifty percent for..." So you cannot violate this. Those who can give voluntary service, "Welcome." Otherwise we don't require. At least they should not be given any salary. That is very bad. This is against principle.</div>

Now hold a fire sacrifice for these devotees. Make sure they know the four regulative principles and follow them strictly. They must also chant at least 16 rounds per day avoiding the ten offenses. Ramesvara Maharaja chant on the beads of the first initiates. Play the tape of Me chanting the Gayatri mantra into the right ear of the second initiates. Teach them how to chant on the finger divisions.

These things we have to know in this human form of life, and, if we like, we can know also. The animal is concerned to take the care of the body, that's all. If we simply remain taking care of this body, then we are animal. Sa eva go-kharaḥ.

Prabhupāda: I have heard that mathematics believes from some imaginary thing, minus, so on, like that.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: The absolute numbers?

Prabhupāda: Something minus one, like that. Who is mathematician here?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: (laughs) Here is our mathematician.

Prabhupāda: Ah, so is that the beginning of mathematics?

Svarūpa Dāmodara: What is the beginning of mathematics?

Sadāpūta: Well, the beginning of mathematics is counting a number. We have that square root of minus one.

Prabhupāda: Yes. That I heard. The beginning is minus one. That is imaginary; it is not fact. But they imagine something at the beginning.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Yes. In fact it is called imaginary number. Square root of minus one.

Prabhupāda: Yes, if mathematics begins with imaginary something, why not Absolute Truth? That Absolute Truth must be life. As Bhāgavata explains, janmādy asya yato 'nvayād itarataś cārtheṣv abhijñaḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 1.1.1|SB 1.1.1]]). He must be aware of everything. That means life. That means life. Now the question is how He became experienced. Svarāṭ, independent. Just like we require experience, knowledge, from somebody else. Experience, knowledge, is not gained automatically, but the Absolute means that He is full of knowledge. How He got knowledge? Svarāṭ, independently. That is the description. You have to imagine at least like that. It is Vedic injunction, it is the fact, that Absolute Truth independently cognizant of everything. That is Absolute Truth.

Svarūpa Dāmodara: Now we want to describe something about this Absolute Truth. His Divine Grace Śrīla Prabhupāda has explained that Absolute Truth is that from which everything comes: janmādy asya yataḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 1.1.1|SB 1.1.1]]). Now what is the Absolute Truth, and how the Absolute Truth is to be known? Now in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Absolute Truth is described, anādir ātmā puruṣo nirguṇaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ ([[Vanisource:SB 3.26.3|SB 3.26.3]]). The Absolute Truth, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the Supreme Soul, and He has no beginning, anādir, He has no beginning. And He is also nirguṇa, He's transcendental to the material modes of nature. And prakṛteḥ para, beyond the existence of this material world.

Prabhupāda: The same thing is explained also in the Brahma-saṁhitā, anādir-ādi. He's anādi, He has no beginning, but He is the beginning of everything. Anādi-ādi, govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi. He is the beginning of everything, but He has no beginning.

Prabhupāda: ...that's nice. Very good. (break) ...surprised that "In temple, why handloom? What kind of temple it is?" They will criticize like that.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Really?

Prabhupāda: They'll... They get one point: "Oh, here is some fault." And then, "They're not worshiping? They are going handloom?"

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: "Here is the moon. There is one dark spot."

Prabhupāda: But the rascals do not know Kṛṣṇa says, svakarmana tam abhyarcya saṁsiddhiṁ labhate naraḥ. Whatever he knows, he can work on it, and that way he can get perfection, provided he is Kṛṣṇa conscious. That is wanted. Otherwise people think, misunderstand, that "They are parasites." Why we should be parasite? We should work for Kṛṣṇa. That's all. It is not that because sannyāsī and brahmacārī, you'll be able. No. Everyone. Svakarmaṇā. Kṛṣṇa says, svakarmaṇā: "Whatever talent you have got, you can serve Me and be perfect." That is the program. They are preparing cloth for the devotees, not for business. Therefore he is serving Kṛṣṇa. To serve devotee and to serve Kṛṣṇa, there is no difference. (break) So proper watering is going on?

Jayapatāka: Actually, these places are very far from water. We have to put some other line to make it very efficient. Now they're just taking by bucket.

Prabhupāda: No, you can join some pipeline. Make a water storage, and from pipeline it will be supplied everywhere. Make water storage on the roof, on the roof.

Jayapatāka: We have... On that corner room there in the kitchen, that's one water storage.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Jayapatāka: That supplies this whole side.

Prabhupāda: So by pump store water and by pipe distribute.

Jayapatāka: This is what the Gargamuni's money, as we get, we're using for these programs.

Prabhupāda: Why it is being broken again?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Why are these rooms being broken?
