			In Vedic philosophy, the entire duration of human life is considered a preparatory stage for the ultimate test: the moment the soul leaves the body. Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly emphasizes that modern society is in deep illusion, completely neglecting this final examination while prioritizing temporary material adjustments. At the time of death, the physical body undergoes immense distress. The temperature violently fluctuates, the bodily elements collapse, and the life air is choked. In this agonizing state, the atheist and the materialist are forced to recognize the supreme authority of the Lord in the form of all-devouring death, which mercilessly strips away all bank balances, titles, and familial protections.

			Understanding the mechanics of transmigration is essential. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when the gross body is destroyed, the subtle body—composed of mind, intelligence, and false ego—remains intact. This subtle vehicle carries the spirit soul to its next gross body, precisely determined by the dominant thoughts at the time of death (yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvam). Therefore, mundane attachments are incredibly dangerous. If a person is absorbed in thoughts of their pet dog, their country, or their spouse, nature will force them to accept a corresponding body in the next life, as seen in the histories of Mahārāja Bharata and King Purañjana.

			While mystic yogīs attempt to conquer death by mechanically fixing the life air between the eyebrows, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the most secure and sublime method is bhakti-yoga. Because the physiological disorder at the time of death often makes formal meditation impossible, the causeless mercy of the holy name is the soul's greatest savior. The history of Ajāmila proves that even a fallen sinner can be saved from the Yamadūtas simply by chanting the name of Nārāyaṇa in distress. Ultimately, the singular perfection of all spiritual practice is ante nārāyaṇa-smṛtiḥ: to remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead without fail at the end of life. Great souls like Parīkṣit Mahārāja and Bhīṣmadeva demonstrated this perfection, completely fixing their consciousness on Kṛṣṇa and successfully transferring to the eternal spiritual sky.
