Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a person, His thinking, feeling, and willing existed before the material creation and are completely transcendental. God does not experience mundane pain or pleasure governed by the modes of material nature. Instead, He feels profound spiritual emotions, especially in relation to His devotees. He feels like a compassionate father, experiencing pain when His devotees suffer, which is why offenses against devotees (vaiṣṇava-aparādha) are so severely judged. Conversely, although He is fully self-satisfied, He feels uniquely benefited and experiences the highest transcendental bliss when exchanging unalloyed loving service with His devotees—sometimes even preferring their affectionate chastisement over formal, exalted prayers.
