Theme Analysis
Spiritual life is often compared to a razor's edge—narrow and difficult to traverse. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly warns his disciples to "always be careful" in their execution of devotional service. This caution is required in several areas: controlling the flickering mind, which can be as dangerous as a snake; adhering to the strict principles of sadhana to avoid the modes of passion and ignorance; maintaining proper etiquette in dealings with the Deity and the spiritual master; and avoiding asat-sanga, or unwholesome association. A neophyte devotee, in particular, is susceptible to fall-down if negligence creeps in. Therefore, constant vigilance is the price of spiritual safety. One must be careful not to commit offenses, not to relax one's vow of chanting sixteen rounds, and not to deviate from the instructions of the disciplic succession.
