Theme Analysis
The material world is characterized by suffering, which is categorized into three distinct types of miseries. Among these, the miseries arising from one's own self are known as adhyatmika. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that this category is further divided into two aspects: miseries pertaining to the gross body and those about the subtle mind. While physical ailments are easily recognized, the distress caused by the mind—such as anxiety, grief over losses, and mental instability—constitutes a significant portion of conditioned life. Ultimately, no amount of material adjustment can nullify these miseries; only by taking shelter of the Supreme Lord can the living entity transcend the inevitable suffering imposed by the body and mind.
- Defining Adhyatmika: The term adhyatmika refers specifically to miseries caused by the living entity's own body and mind, distinguishing them from those caused by other living beings or natural disturbances.
- The Mental Component: A crucial aspect of adhyatmika misery is mental distress, where the mind becomes disturbed due to external circumstances, such as financial loss or personal tragedy, proving that even without physical pain, one can suffer intensely.
- Universality of Suffering: All conditioned souls, regardless of their status or location, are subjected to these threefold miseries due to their entrapment in gross and subtle material bodies.
- Futility of Material Solutions: Although humans invent various remedies using their limited intelligence, they cannot escape the stringent laws of nature that impose these mental and physical sufferings.
- The Spiritual Solution: Complete freedom from the miseries of the body and mind is only possible through devotional service and hearing the topics of the Supreme Lord, which situates the devotee in a transcendental position.

- A sane man must look to eliminate these miseries (three categories, namely miseries arising from the body and mind, miseries arising from other living entities, and miseries arising due to natural calamities) and thereby become happy in life
- Adhyatmic, pertaining to the body. And another part of this adhyatmic misery is due to the mind. Suppose I have suffered a great loss. So the mind is not in good condition
- All of these living entities are subject to the threefold miseries, including those miseries pertaining to the body and mind
H
- He (who took complete shelter of the Lord) is transcendental to all these miseries - due to the body, the mind, or natural disturbances of summer and winter
- He is thus ready to suffer the threefold miseries - miseries brought about by the body and mind, the inimical behavior of other living entities and natural disturbances caused by the demigods
I
- In the Vedic language the miserable conditions have been described in three ways: adhyatmika, adhibhautika and adhidaivika - miseries due to the condition of this body and due to the condition of the mind
- In this material world we are always suffering under threefold miseries - the miseries arising from the body and the mind, from other living entities, and from natural catastrophes
N
- No one can escape the threefold miseries of materialistic life, namely (1) miseries pertaining to the body and mind, (2) miseries pertaining to the difficulties imposed by society, community, nation and other living entities
- None of the above-mentioned three religious paths (karm-kanda, jnana-kanda & demigod worship) can deliver a person from the threefold miseries of material existence, namely, miseries caused by the body and mind, by other living entities & by the demigods
T
- The living entities are trying to counteract different miserable conditions pertaining to providence, other living entities or the body and mind. Still, they must remain conditioned by the laws of nature, despite all attempts to counter these laws
- The living entity can attain the transcendental happiness of being freed from the three kinds of material miseries - miseries arising from the body and mind, from other living entities and from natural disturbances
- The material world, or material existential life, is filled with threefold miseries: miseries pertaining to the body and mind, miseries pertaining to natural disturbances and miseries inflicted by other living entities
- The miseries of life are divided into three categories, namely miseries arising from the body and mind, miseries arising from other living entities, and miseries arising due to natural calamities
- The three kinds of miserable conditions-adhyatmika, adhibhautika & adhidaivika (miseries inflicted by the body & mind itself, those inflicted by other living entities & natural disturbances) - were all absent during the reign of Ramacandra or Yudhisthira
- The threefold material miseries are miseries arising from the body and the mind, miseries arising from dealings with other living entities, and miseries arising from natural disturbances
- The threefold miseries are called adhyatmika, adhibhautika, & adhidaivika. The word adhyatmika refers to those miseries caused by mind & body. Sometimes the living entity suffers bodily, & sometimes he is distressed mentally. Both are adhyatmika miseries
- There are miseries arising from the body and mind, from other living entities and from natural catastrophes. We are either suffering from all three of these miseries, or at least from one
- There are multifarious miseries in material existence - those pertaining to the body and the mind, those imposed by other living entities and those imposed by natural disturbances. But a sadhu is not disturbed by such miserable conditions
- There are three kinds of suffering, including miseries pertaining to the body and mind. In Hawaii, in front of my house, a man was keeping some animals and birds for the purpose of taking them to be slaughtered
- Therefore, O Vidura, how can persons completely under the shelter of Lord Krsna in devotional service be put into miseries pertaining to the body, the mind, nature, and other men and living creatures?
- These threefold miseries are miseries suffered by mental calamity at the hands of the demigods (such as freezing wind and scorching heat), miseries offered by other living entities, and miseries arising from the mind and body themselves
