Theme Analysis

The spiritual sky contains unlimited abodes where the Supreme Personality of Godhead is eternally worshiped, but the highest and most intimate of these is Goloka Vṛndāvana. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, while there is no material difference between the Vaikuṇṭha planets and Goloka, the mood of the devotees is vastly different. In Vaikuṇṭha, God is served with awe and reverence in unlimited opulence, whereas in Vṛndāvana, God is served with spontaneous, natural affection. Although Lord Kṛṣṇa is eternally present in this supreme abode, He remains simultaneously all-pervading as the Supersoul.

Out of His causeless mercy, the Lord descends to the material world and displays His personal pastimes in the earthly Vṛndāvana, which is an exact replica of the Kṛṣṇaloka planet. All the pastimes enacted there are completely spiritual and devoid of any material contamination. The Lord descends to display these remarkably sweet pastimes simply to attract the conditioned souls back home, back to Godhead. When Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma roam the forests of Vṛndāvana and the banks of the Yamunā river, They derive immense transcendental pleasure, reciprocating with the pure love of Their associates.

In Vṛndāvana, every entity is fully conscious of Kṛṣṇa. Even the trees, hills, rivers, and flowers are exalted living entities expressing their spiritual affection in śānta-rasa. When the Lord enters the forest, the fully blossoming flowers weep in ecstasy, dripping honey down their petals. Kṛṣṇa recognizes that these trees and elements are not ordinary living beings; they are exalted devotees participating in His divine play.

The devotion exhibited by the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana represents the pinnacle of spiritual realization. While Vasudeva and Devakī are glorious devotees, Nanda and Yaśodā are even greater due to their intense parental affection. Furthermore, the unalloyed love exhibited by the gopīs, whose separation from Kṛṣṇa leaves them paralyzed and barely breathing on the banks of the Yamunā, is the absolute perfection of bhakti-yoga. Therefore, Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī concludes that those attracted to the Lord's pastimes in Vṛndāvana are unquestionably the topmost devotees.
