- A devotee is not at all interested in speculative activities. Instead of cultivating speculative knowledge or practicing mystic yoga, a devotee should worship the Deity in the temple and continuously engage in the Lord’s service
- A neophyte devotee, of course, approaches the Supreme Lord for relief from distress or poverty, or for speculative knowledge of the Lord
- A person who beats an empty husk of wheat cannot get grain, and one who engages simply in speculative knowledge cannot achieve the desired result of self realization. The only gain is trouble
- A person without devotional service who simply wants to know things (kevala-bodha-labdhaye) gains only dry speculative knowledge but no spiritual profit - SB 10.14.4
- Above them (the four kinds of pious men) are the pure devotees, whose devotion is not tainted by any material tinges of fruitive work or speculative knowledge
- All these activities (material upliftment, understanding the Supreme by speculative knowledge, fruitive activity, severe austerity and penance) are against the natural growth of spontaneous love of Godhead
- Although one may consider the reflection of the sun from a mirror to be false, it has its factual existence. Accordingly, to prove by speculative knowledge that there is no reality would be extremely difficult
- Although people are inclined to practice these processes (fruitive activity, speculative knowledge and the mystic yoga system), they cannot attain the desired results without being touched by krsna-bhakti, devotional service
- As far as fruitive activity is concerned, the contamination is the desire for elevation to a higher standard of life, and for speculative knowledge the contamination is the desire to merge into the existence of the Absolute Truth
- As soon as these (material upliftment, understanding the Supreme by speculative knowledge, fruitive activity & severe austerity) are present within the heart, the heart should be understood to be unclean & therefore unfit to serve as Krsna's sitting place
B
- Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati has remarked that there is a class of common men claim that one can approach the Supreme Lord either through fruitive activities, speculative knowledge, meditation or austerity and that any one of the methods will succeed
- Brahma said, "By Your (Krsna's) own grace only, You become revealed to a devotee. You are unconquerable by any other means. Speculative knowledge without any trace of devotional service is simply a useless waste of time in the search for You"
- Brahma said, "Simply by understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one can overcome the chain of repeated birth and death. I therefore recommend that people should not try to understand You (Krsna) by their speculative knowledge"
- Brahma said, "The attempt of persons who are interested only in speculative knowledge is simply wasted labor, like the labor of a person who attempts to gain something by beating an empty husk of rice paddy"
- By following the paths of speculative philosophical knowledge, fruitive activity or mystic yoga to control the senses, one cannot satisfy Krsna, the Supreme Lord. Unalloyed devotional love for Krsna is the only cause for the Lord's satisfaction
- By karma-kanda, sacrificial activity, one comes to the conclusion of jnana-kanda, speculative knowledge, and that after speculation one comes to the conclusion that worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the ultimate
- By the divine grace of the spiritual master, the seed of pure devotional service, which is completely different from the seed of fruitive activities and speculative knowledge, is sown in the heart of the devotee
C
D
- Devotees are not interested in speculative knowledge. Therefore, the Sankhya enunciated by Kapila Muni is meant to establish one firmly in devotional service
- Devotees are not interested in speculative knowledge; the Sankhya enunciated by Kapila Muni is meant to establish one firmly in devotional service
- Devotional service mixed with non-Vedic speculative knowledge is certainly not pure devotional service
E
- Even after following such methods (pious atonement, speculative knowledge & meditation in mystic yoga) one takes to fruitive activities again, unable to control his mind, which is contaminated by the base qualities of nature, namely passion and ignorance
- Even though one may come to the platform of brahma-bhuta (SB 4.30.20) and understand his spiritual identity by speculative knowledge, one cannot enjoy spiritual life without understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead
F
- For a conditioned soul it is very important to hear from the mouth of a pure devotee, who is fully surrendered to the lotus feet of the Lord without any material desire, speculative knowledge or contamination of the modes of material nature
- For one who is fully engaged in My devotional service, whose mind is fixed on Me in bhakti-yoga, the path of speculative knowledge and dry renunciation is not very beneficial
H
- He (the pure devotee) should be above fruitive activity and speculative knowledge
- He again asked Ramananda Raya to speak further, and Ramananda Raya replied, "Pure devotional service without any touch of speculative knowledge is the essence of perfection"
- Here (in SB 10.2.35) it is said that this vijnanam is always defeating all kinds of speculative knowledge
I
- If one abandons speculative knowledge and simply engages in devotional service, he has attained his perfection
- If one has faith he is firmly convinced that simply by rendering devotional service to Lord Krsna all other activities are automatically performed - including ritualistic duties, sacrifices, yoga and the speculative pursuit of knowledge
- If one pretends to be a devotee of the Lord but does not understand the difference between dry speculative knowledge and knowledge of the Supreme Absolute Truth, then such a person's devotion borders on impersonalism and is rank with cheap sentimentalism
- If one studies Vedanta but merely advances somewhat in speculative knowledge and does not understand the Supreme Lord, one remains the same mudha
- If you want to go by the speculative knowledge, trying to find out what is God just like the theosophist and many other societies - they do that, speculating - you cannot reach God by speculation. That is not. Because your senses are limited
- If you want to know what is God, what is Krsna, then you have to go through this bhakti-marga, or devotional... There is no other way. Krsna never says that He can be known through speculation or cultivation of so-called speculative knowledge
- Impersonal speculation, monism (merging into the existence of the Supreme), speculative knowledge, mystic yoga and meditation are all compared to grains of sand. They simply cause irritation to the heart
- Impersonal speculation, monism , speculative knowledge, mystic yoga and meditation are all compared to grains of sand. They simply cause irritation to the heart. No one can satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead by such activities
- In his Anubhasya commentary, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura says that this stage - devotional service mixed with speculative knowledge - is also external and not within the jurisdiction of pure devotional service as practiced in Vaikunthaloka
- In Padyavali a devotee says, "Persons who are attached to speculative knowledge for self realization, who have decided that the supreme truth is beyond meditation and who have thus become situated in the modes of goodness"
- In the Eleventh Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam (SB 11.20.31), the Lord Himself says that there is no necessity to cultivate speculative knowledge and renunciation if one is actually engaged in the devotional service of the Lord
- In the higher stage of speculative knowledge, the same misconception of "mine" is transformed into "I am," or "It is all I am," etc
- In the Koran there are descriptions of fruitive activity, speculative knowledge, mystic power and union with the Supreme, but ultimately all this is refuted and the Lord's personal feature established, along with His devotional service
- In the modern world every knowledge is speculative, hypothetical. There is no perfect knowledge. So if you want to be perfectly in knowledge, then you have to take knowledge from the Supreme Personality of Godhead
- In the Vedic scriptures, stress is sometimes given to fruitive activity, speculative knowledge and the mystic yoga system
- It (knowledge by speculation) may be successful or may not be successful. There is no certainty. But if somebody from the roof says: "The sound is due to this," then our knowledge is perfect
K
M
- My dear Krsna, formerly, when You were staying in Mathura, You sent Uddhava to teach Me speculative knowledge and mystic yoga. Now You Yourself are speaking the same thing, but My mind doesn't accept it
- My Lord, devotional service unto You is the only auspicious path. If one gives it up simply for speculative knowledge or the understanding that these living beings are spirit souls and the material world is false, he undergoes a great deal of trouble
N
- No one can satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead by such activities (impersonal speculation, monism, speculative knowledge, mystic yoga and meditation), nor do we give the Lord a chance to sit in our hearts peacefully
- No one can understand God by speculative knowledge. Indeed, by speculation one will be bewildered
- Now Sukadeva Gosvami is suggesting the platform of speculative knowledge. Progressing from karma-kanda to jnana-kanda, he is proposing, prayascittam vimarsanam: "Real atonement is full knowledge"
O
- One cannot attain liberation simply by speculative knowledge
- One cannot derive the proper benefit from other methods, such as pious atonement, speculative knowledge and meditation in mystic yoga
- One is prone to commit sinful activities even after atonement, which is therefore very inadequate for purification. On the path of speculative knowledge one becomes free from sinful life by understanding things as they are
- One should not attempt material upliftment, understanding the Supreme by speculative knowledge, fruitive activity, severe austerity and penance, and so on
- One who analytically studies the purpose of the Vedas understands that by karma-kanda, sacrificial activity, one comes to the conclusion of jnana-kanda, speculative knowledge
- One's search for the Absolute Truth by dint of speculative knowledge is complete when one comes to the point of understanding Krsna and surrenders unto Him. That is the real point of perfectional knowledge - Bhagavad-gita 7.19
- Other paths, such as the path of jnana and the path of karma, are not very profitable. Pious activities can elevate one to the higher planetary systems, and by speculative knowledge one can merge into the Brahman existence, but that is not real profit
- Our speculative knowledge, intellectual platform, is not helpful. We must receive knowledge from superior source, perfect source. That knowledge is perfect
S
- Sankhya means physical study of the cosmic situation through speculative knowledge. This is generally known as jnana-sastra. The Sankhyites are attached to the impersonal Brahman, but the Absolute Truth is known in three ways
- Sometimes a neophyte devotee or ordinary person thinks highly of speculative knowledge, austerity, penances and renunciation, thinking them the only path for advancement in devotional service. Actually this is not a fact
- Sometimes one does not know whether to practice speculative knowledge and mystic yoga for advancement in spiritual knowledge
- Speculative knowledge alone, without devotional service, is not able to give liberation. On the other hand, even without knowledge one can obtain liberation if one engages in the Lord's devotional service
- Speculative knowledge and fruitive work cannot lead one to the goal of perfection
- Speculative knowledge and pious activity do not solve the problems of material life. One should be inquisitive to understand his spiritual position
- Speculative knowledge cannot give us reality as it is, but will continue to be nefariously imperfect
- Spiritual life means becoming detached from material life and engaging in the loving service of the Lord. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore asked Ramananda Raya to explain something transcendental to devotional service mixed with speculative knowledge
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then told Sanatana Gosvami about proper renunciation according to a particular situation, and the Lord forbade dry renunciation and speculative knowledge in all respects
- Sri Vyasadeva is the editor of all descriptions of the Vedic literatures, and thus he has described transcendental realization in different ways, namely by fruitive activities, speculative knowledge, mystic power and devotional service
- Srila Rupa Gosvami says in his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.1.11) that pure devotional service is jnana-karmady-anavrtam: (CC Madhya 19.167) pure devotional service is without any tinge of speculative knowledge and fruitive activities
- Such a transcendental situation (God's) is hardly understood by those whose devotion is mixed with speculative knowledge or fruitive activities
- Sukadeva Gosvami is suggesting the platform of speculative knowledge. When it has failed that a thief, repeatedly committing criminal activities, repeatedly he is being punished but he is not corrected, then what is the remedy? That is vimarsanam
- Suppose there is a very big man in your country. If you speculate about him at home, the knowledge is never perfect. Speculative knowledge is never perfect, especially when you imagine something about somebody. That is all humbug; it has no meaning
T
- The acquirement of speculative knowledge is also considered a method of atonement
- The conditioned soul cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead by speculative knowledge or by imagination. One must know the Supreme Personality of Godhead by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead
- The demigods prayed - Ajnana-bhidapamarjanam - by Your (Krsna's) appearance the speculative knowledge of ignorance will be vanquished, and the real, experienced knowledge of authorities like Lord Brahma will be established
- The demigods prayed - without Your appearing as Krsna, as You are, neither ajnana-bhida (the nescience of speculative knowledge) nor vijnanam would be realized
- The demigods said: Without Your appearing as Krsna, as You are, neither ajnana-bhidapamarjanam (destruction of the nescience of speculative knowledge) nor vijnanam would be realized
- The demigods said: Your (Krsna's) appearance will vanquish the ignorance of speculative knowledge and establish the real experienced knowledge of authorities like Lord Brahma
- The devotee has no need for speculative knowledge, pious activity or mystic yoga. All these are automatically present when one renders the Lord transcendental loving service
- The entire Vedas are meant for the understanding of karma, jnana and yoga - fruitive activity, speculative knowledge and mystic yoga
- The heart must be cleansed of all material motives brought about through fruitive work, speculative knowledge, the mystic yoga system and so many other forms of so-called meditation
- The karma-kanda portion stresses the execution of fruitive activities. But ultimately it is advised that one abandon both karma-kanda and jnana-kanda (speculative knowledge) and accept only upasana-kanda, or bhakti-kanda
- The living entity is actually under the full control of material nature, but still he thinks himself independent. Even when he is elevated by speculative knowledge and tries to merge into the existence of Brahman, the same disease continues
- The Lord is simply disturbed by them (impersonal speculation, monism (merging into the existence of the Supreme), speculative knowledge, mystic yoga and meditation)
- The path of devotional service is always independent of other activity. The path of speculative knowledge and mystic yoga may be a little beneficial in the beginning, but it cannot be considered part of devotional service
- The paths of fruitive activities, speculative knowledge and meditation do not lead one to the perfectional stage, but by the process of devotional service the Lord actually becomes approachable
- The platform of jnana, speculative knowledge, is better than the platform of karma, fruitive action
- The processes of speculative knowledge and renunciation are not actually the chief items for elevation in devotional service
- The pure devotee is described by the words bhaktya kevalaya. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains that bhaktya kevalaya means jnana-karmady-amisraya, "unmixed with fruitive activities or speculative knowledge
- The revealed scriptures conclude that one should give up fruitive activity, speculative knowledge and the mystic yoga system and instead take to devotional service, by which Krsna can be fully satisfied
- The sense of intimacy by which one thinks of Krsna as one’s only shelter and friend is absent in santa-rasa because one accepts Krsna as impersonal Parambrahma or localized Paramatma. This understanding is based on the speculative knowledge of the jnani
- The senses are certainly products of the mode of passion in false ego, and therefore philosophical speculative knowledge and fruitive activities are predominantly products of the mode of passion
- The transcendental mellows generated from the dealings between the gopis and Krsna cannot be tasted by means of fruitive activity, yogic austerities, speculative knowledge, regulative devotional service, mantra-yoga or meditation
- The word vasana (“material desires”) refers to dry speculative knowledge. Such speculative knowledge is only material
- There are many instances in the various Vedic writings of persons who were aspiring after liberation by speculative knowledge but gave up this process in order to take complete shelter under the lotus feet of Krsna
- There are three kinds of spiritual processes for understanding the Absolute Truth - the processes of speculative knowledge, mystic yoga & bhakti-yoga. According to these three processes, the Absolute Truth is manifested as Brahman, Paramatma or Bhagavan
- There is no doubt about it. Krsna’s form, Krsna’s flute, Krsna’s color - everything is reality. Here it is said that this vijnanam is always defeating all kinds of speculative knowledge
- These verses (of Prarthana by Srila Narottama dasa Thakura) indicate that one first has to be purified of all material desires and all attraction for fruitive activity and speculative knowledge if one wishes to understand Vrndavana
- They claim that one can approach the Supreme Lord either through fruitive activities, speculative knowledge, meditation or austerity and that any one of these methods will enable one to reach the perfectional stage
- Those who are addicted to fruitive activities and speculative knowledge cannot understand the value of the holy name of Lord Krsna, which is always completely pure, eternally liberated and full of spiritual bliss
- Those who are interested in the impersonal Brahman effulgence, which is not different from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, can attain that goal by speculative knowledge
- Those who know the science of Krsna consciousness automatically know of subsidiary subjects like fruitive activity, speculative knowledge, yoga, charity, penance, austerity, and chanting mantras
- To be an unalloyed devotee, one must be freed from all material desires and untouched by fruitive activity and speculative knowledge
- To understand what is God, it is not possible. It is not a subject matter of speculative knowledge. No. It is to be received through the right source, deductive process, not inductive process. Because our senses are limited
U
W
- We cannot manufacture God; neither we can speculate. That is not possible. But you can get some idea, but there is no possibility of getting perfect knowledge of God. God is unlimited. I am limited. So my speculative knowledge is limited
- We cannot understand Krsna by our speculative knowledge. If we try to do that, then we can approach up to the impersonal Brahman feature of Krsna. Brahmeti. That is not full Krsna. That is Krsna's partial realization
- When a person becomes devoid of all material desires, there is no longer need for speculative knowledge or fruitive activities
- When it comes to the real standard, yada, jnanam yada, when the knowledge or speculative empiric knowledge, pratinivrtta-gunormi-cakram, no more affected by the waves of these modes of nature
- When one firmly realizes Krsna as the supreme goal, he is no longer attracted by mystic yoga practice or the speculative empirical methods of knowledge
- Without spiritual life, nothing is auspicious. Moghasa mogha-karmano mogha jnana vicetasah (BG 9.12). No one can become successful in fruitive activities or speculative knowledge without being Krsna conscious
- Without Their (Gaura-Nitai's) strength, simply attempting to get out of the clutches of matter by speculative knowledge will be insufficient
