- You are not this body (Conv and Letters)
A

- A devotee does not attach much importance to the pains and trouble pertaining to the body because he knows perfectly well that he is not the material body
- A dog cannot understand that you are not this body. So similarly, if the human being cannot understand that he is not this body, what is the difference between him and the dog?
- A human being is fit to inquire as to whether he is this body or something else. This can be understood very easily. I am not this body, because at the time of death the body remains - although everyone cries, - Oh, the poor man is gone
- A liberated person - one who has completely understood that he is not the body but a spirit soul - disregards past activities performed in ignorance and performs his present activities in such a way that they produce no reactions
- A living being is not the material body but an eternal part and parcel of the Supreme Being, and thus revival of his self-knowledge is essential. Without this knowledge, the human life is baffled
- A materialistic rascal does not know that he is not the body but a spiritual soul within the body. However, one should understand his real position and cultivate knowledge by which to get free from bodily entanglement
- A sannyasi is one who has clearly understood, through advancement in knowledge, that Brahman - he, the person himself - is the soul, not the body
- Abhayam means we are always afraid. We are always agitated, anxiety, because I am thinking, "I am this body." But if you are completely realized that you are not this body, you are something else, spirit soul, then I am immediately free from anxieties
- Abodha-jatah means one who is born fool. Every one of us is a born fool. Why? From the beginning of our life I know that "I am this body," although I am not this body. Therefore we are all born fools, everyone
- Above the mental and intellectual planes, where the atmosphere is spiritualized, we can understand, "I am not this mind, intellect, or body. Aham brahmasmi - I am spirit, part and parcel of the Supreme Lord." That is the platform of real understanding
- Accidentally I have got this body in America or India or Africa or in hell or heaven. That is accidental. Or by my karma. But actually, I am not this body
- Action based on this knowledge (we are not these material bodies, we are spiritual) - spiritual activity - is work in Krsna consciousness
- Actually I am not this body. That is a fact. You analyze your body. From every point of view
- Actually the human life is meant for being educated that he is not this body; he is soul. That is the Vedanta-sutra philosophy, to inquire about the spirit soul. That is our main business
- Actually we are not these bodies. That is the first instruction in the Bhagavad-gita. So, especially in the modern age, people are thinking like that, and they are unhappy
- Aham brahmasmi, "I am Brahman. I am not this matter." This is perfection. A man who has made sufficient progress to this realization is more perfect - this is the way of perfection
- Aham brahmasmi. I am not this material body, but spirit soul. And what are the characteristics of the jiva, the soul? First of all, he is animanam, very minute, infinitesimal
- Aham brahmasmi. That is Vedic instruction. And as soon as you come to this point, if you are firmly convinced that you are not this body, that is called brahma-bhuta (SB 4.30.20) stage, Brahman realization stage. That is knowledge, real knowledge
- Aham brahmasmi: "I am not this body." This is applicable only to the person who constantly engages in the devotional service of Krsna and is thus in the transcendental stage; he is above the influence of the three modes of material nature
- Although we are not these bodies but are pure consciousness, somehow or other we have become encased within the bodily dress
- An intelligent man should know that, "I am not this body; I am spirit soul. My field of activities are on the spiritual platform and then I will be happy." So KC movement means educating people how to be situated on the spiritual platform and be happy
- Anyone who is in the material world, he has got this material body. Therefore it is called ayam deha: "this deha, this body." I am not deha. That is the tenth-class ignorance if I think - I am this body
- Arcana means worship of the Deity in the temple. By executing this process one confirms himself to be not the body but spirit soul
- Arjuna, five thousand years ago, he was given lesson about this, that "You are not this body, you are soul." The same problem is now also for the foolish person, because he will always remain in the world, and the intelligent man is to teach him
- As soon as I understand that "I am not this body, I am spirit soul, and my symptom is consciousness," and that consciousness, as it is purified by this process, the whole material miseries will be over
- As soon as I understand that "I am not this body; body's acting through my consciousness," if I am firmly convinced, if I stand steadily on this conviction, that "I am consciousness," then all my designations at once go
- As soon as one is convinced that "I am not this material body," then immediately he becomes joyful
- As soon as our heart is cleansed, we can understand that - I am not this material body. I am spirit soul. I have got different business. So long I am working for the maintenance of this body. Now I understand that body is superficial shirt and coat dress
- As soon as we come to the spiritual platform, there will be no more different opinion. Then everything will go on. The first lesson of coming to the spiritual platform is to understand that - I am not this body
- As soon as we come to understand "I am not this body; I am spirit soul, and my symptom is consciousness," we will be able to establish ourselves in real happiness
- As soon as we think that, "I am this body," I'm not liberated. And as soon as I know perfectly well that, "I am not this body," I am liberated. This knowledge gives liberation
- As soon as we understand or become convinced that I am not this body, then spiritual education begins
- As soon as you come to that position, that "I am not this body," then automatically you become abhayam, no fear
- As soon as you come to this (I am not this body, but I am spirit soul.) platform of understanding, then the next stage will be you will be jolly
- As soon as you come to this point of being firmly convinced that you are not this body, that is called the brahma-bhuta (SB 4.30.20) stage of Brahman realization. That is knowledge, real knowledge
- As soon as you decide that you are not this body, you are transcendental to this body, then you have to understand what is the transcendental nature and what is your business, what you should do. These things will come
- As soon as you understand that you are not this body, you are not matter, that you are spirit soul, then immediately you become joyful
- As we are not this body, past life means there was another body; we have forgotten it. Just like at night we dream, "I have gone to some foreign place and talking with some foreigners and so on, so on"
- At the present moment we are all working on the platform of bodily concept of life but when you come to the platform of understanding that aham brahmasmi, I am not this matter, I am spirit soul, then my occupational duty changes
- Atmavan especially means that one should be self-possessed. He should always remain in the pure consciousness that he is spirit soul and not the material body or the mind. That will make him progress confidently in Krsna consciousness
B
- Because I am in ignorance, therefore I am thinking, "I am this body." So it requires a little jnana, knowledge. Then we will understand that - I am not this body; I am different from this body
- Because I am not this body, so my expansion of body is also not "I am." But whole world is going on on this false impression. The whole world is going on. The fight, the fighting between one nation and another nation - because due to this body
- Because the living entity is eternally part & parcel of God, when he is liberated, he revives his original, eternal, part-and-parcel identity. The realization of aham brahmasmi (I am not this body) does not mean that the living entity loses his identity
- Beginning of knowledge is to understand one's constitutional position. That knowledge is imparted in the beginning of the Bhagavad-gita that - You are not this body. You are spirit spark
- Bhagavad-gita as it is is pure knowledge, beginning with the first knowledge one has to understand, that he is not this body. Because this is the basic principle all ignorance: "I am this body." "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am brahmana,"
- Bhagavad-gita begins with the spiritual instruction that one is not the body but is within the body. This consciousness can be possible only if one chants the holy name of Krsna, the Hare Krsna maha-mantra & always keeps association of devotees
- Bhagavad-gita says you are not this body. That is the beginning of education. And now education means be nationalist
- Bhakti is realizing that one is pure spirit and not matter at all. Our real identity is not this body, which is simply a covering of the spirit, but our real identity is dasa, servant of Krsna
- Big, big professors, they say that "This body is everything. After the body is finished, everything is finished." But that is not the fact. That is the first spiritual education to understand, that "I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi: I am spirit soul
- Brahman life begins when we understand that "I am not this material body. I am spirit soul." That is brahma-jnana. And one who has got this knowledge, he is brahmana
- Brahman realization is also very high position. It is not ordinary thing, that "I am not this body. I am Brahman." This realization is not ordinary realization. It is also realized after purification of the mind. But that is also not sufficient
- By mental speculation one can understand that one is not the body but a spirit soul, but unless one engages in devotional service, the real purpose of life is never fulfilled
- By taking advantage of the Superself's guidance in the form of intelligence we can either continue to study & practice our conclusion "I am not this body," or we can choose to remain in the false material identification
D
- Deha-gehatma-buddheh is animal conception. One has to come to understand that "I am not this body, I am not this mind or intelligence." Aham brahmasmi - I am part and parcel of Krsna, Param Brahman
- Dehi means the possession of the Dehi is within the body, not the body is the person. But no education. Throughout the whole scientific world, university education, there is no concern that - I am not this body; I am soul
- Dehi means the possessor, the owner of the body. It is said clearly, and we can understand that when I meditate upon my body, actually what I am. So if one is deep thinker, he'll immediately understand that "I am not this body"
- Demons do not know that "I am not this body. I am spirit soul. Aham brahmasmi." So therefore they do not know this. Therefore they are called nastatmanah. They have lost their spiritual sense. Why? Alpa-buddhayah, not very intelligent
- Dog, he does not know anything else. He simply knows that he is this body. But a human being, by cultivation of knowledge, by logic, by argument, he can understand that - I am not this body
- Dogs are thinking, "I am dog," and he's barking. Similarly, if I think, "I am Indian," "I am American," where is the difference between dog & me? There is no difference. Dog does not know that he is not this body, & I do not know that I am not this body
- Don't be captivated by the material opulence, even you are put into great difficulties. Because you are not this material body. You are spirit soul. So your progress should be steady on the spiritual platform
- Due to our misunderstanding we are creating problem. There is no problem at all, but the same misunderstanding: that this land does not belong to me; I am claiming, "It is my land." This body - I am not this body, but I am claiming, I am this body
E
- Even if we know, still, if there is some bodily pain we become very much disturbed. But we should know, always remember, that "I am not this body"
- Even though a person may be in full knowledge that he is not this body but is transcendental to the body, he still may not be able to discriminate between the soul and the Supersoul. BG 1972 purports
- Every one of us is a born fool. Why? From the beginning of our life I know that "I am this body," although I am not this body. Therefore we are all born fools, everyone. And therefore, according to Vedic civilization, one has to take his second birth
- Everyone is trying to think, "I am not this body." They have experience that they are suffering so much on account of bodily identification, and so, - If only I could forget my bodily identification
- Everyone is ultimately afraid of being killed. But if he understands fully that he is not this body, then killed or not killed, he is not any attached to this body
- Everyone requires to be cured of this disease of ignorance. The disease of ignorance, means "I am this body. I am this body." I am not this body
- Experimental knowledge can be achieved when one has understood the false knowledge. By experimental or proved knowledge, one can understand that he is not the body but spirit soul
F
- False ego means accepting this body as oneself. When one understands that he is not his body and is spirit soul, that is real ego. Ego is there. False ego is condemned, but not real ego. BG 1972 purports
- First of all we have to learn that "I am not this body," that "I am spirit soul." That is Vedic instruction
- First spiritual knowledge is this, that "I am not this body." Then the spiritual knowledge begins. Otherwise there is no possibility of spiritual knowledge
- First spiritual realization is to understand oneself that "I am not matter; I am spirit." This is the first stage of spiritual realization - when one firmly convinced. How? By knowledge
- First teaching is that, "You are not this body." That is the beginning of Krsna's teaching
- For getting that supreme knowledge (I am not this body, but I am spirit soul) so many, I mean to say, transcendentalists, they were trying life after life, just to get detached. But the easiest process is that if one is engaged in the devotional service
- For the impersonalist, pure egotism is aham brahmasmi - "I am not this body; I am spirit soul." But in its actual position, the spirit soul has devotional activities to perform
H
- He (a person acting in Krsna consciousness) knows that he is not this body and that this body does not belong to him. He himself belongs to Krsna, and the body too belongs to Krsna. BG 1972 purports
- He (self realized person) knows perfectly well that he is not this body, but is the fragmental portion of Krsna. He is therefore not joyful in achieving something, nor does he lament in losing anything which is related to his body
- He (the cleansed heart person who is free from the clutches of maya, or the materialistic way of life) understands that he is not this body - that he's a spirit soul, and that his business is therefore different from merely material concerns
- Here (in Bhagavad-gita) the Lord instructs us in buddhi-yoga. Buddhi-yoga means that we have full consciousness that we are not this body; and if I act with this understanding, then I am not body - I am consciousness. That is a fact
- Hiranyakasipu was chastising him (Prahlada Maharaja) in so many ways. But he was not afraid at all, fearless, because he was convinced that "I am not this body. I am different from body." "I will not die." It is simply knowledge, firm knowledge
- HK movement, to understand the science of Krsna very easily. We cannot understand on account of our ignorance. I am not this body, everyone sees practically. Still, he's identifying with this body. This is called ignorance or, in common words, rascaldom
- How the transcendentalists realize their identity beyond birth and death, beyond the material body, and transfer themselves from the material universe to the spiritual universes are the subjects of the following chapters - of BBD - We Are Not These Bodies
- Human life should be sober. He should... Therefore the first beginning of real life is to understand that "I am not this body." This is the first lesson. But where is that education? Throughout the whole world, go anywhere
I
- I am American," "I am Indian," "I am Chinese," "I am Russian," "I am Hindu," "I am Muslim," "I am Christian . . ." These are all designations due to this body. But actually I am neither American, neither Indian, nor Christian
- I am identifying with this body, therefore there is fearfulness. And if by knowledge I can understand that "I am not this body. I am spirit soul," aham brahmasmi, and if you are actually convinced, then there is no fearfulness
- I am not this (body). This is most essential education. Unfortunately, the so-called scientists are making more and more attached to this body
- I am not this body - And when he tries to understand that spiritual identification, then he is intelligent. Otherwise he is not intelligent
- I am not this body - that is the whole scheme of Vedic knowledge. Apasya . . . this is the important point, apasyatam atma-tattvam. Because they do not know what is the necessity of life, therefore they have created so many news
- I am not this body. I am spirit soul. My destination is how to go to the spiritual world, how to meet the supreme spirit, God, and live with Him in His association
- I am not this body... As Krsna wanted to impress upon Arjuna in the beginning of His teaching of Bhagavad-gita: "First of all try to understand what you are."
- I am not this body; I am not this material world. I am a spiritual identity, part and parcel of God
- I am not this body; I am the soul. Within the body, I am living, and after giving up this body, I'll have to accept another body -This is the beginning of knowledge. One who does not understand these plain, primary principles of knowledge, he's animal
- I am pure spirit soul. I am not this body and I am not these bodily designations that so many people have foisted upon me. My family and friends, my country, this that. We should think - I am Krsna's. I'm not Russian, I am not Hindu, I'm simply Krsna's
- I am put into this body under certain circumstances. Otherwise I am not this body
- I am spirit soul, and all these attachments belong to the body, but I am not this body. This is the essence of understanding
- I don't think in any university throughout the whole world there is such educational department where this science is handled. The soul. Whether I am this body or I'm not the body. I am not this body; that is the fact
- I have got this human form of life for understanding Krsna, understanding God, my position, what I am. I am not this body. I am spirit soul. I have been put into this body, & because I have been put into this body - the body is material - it must finish
- I know that I am not this body, theoretically or . . . but if somebody comes to cut my body, I will be very much protective. Although I know . . . I cannot feel that "I am not this body; let the body be cut off. I don't mind." No
- I repeatedly say this. So unless we understand that I or you, we are not this body, there is no question of spiritual understanding or spiritual education
- If a human being does not understand this fact - that he is not this body, he is changing his body, but he is spirit soul - then he is no better than the cats and dogs. We do not want to keep the human society in the category of cats and dogs
- If a person understands that he is not his body and that he has nothing to do with this material world, he becomes free from material entanglement. But that realization is not the perfectional stage
- If anyone is in bodily concept of life that "I am this body," then the basic principle of our life becomes on the false platform, because I am not this body
- If by the evolutionary process of philosophical life one happens to reach the platform of intellectual life and understands that he is not this material body but a spiritual soul, he is situated in the vijnana-maya stage
- If I am fully convinced that I am not this body, then if there is some injury or some disease or some mishap in the body, I am not concerned because I know that I am not this body. That is self-realization
- If I am not this body, then in relationship with this body, whatever I have expended, my extended selfishness, is at once vanished. Then I am mukta-purusa, I am liberated soul
- If I am not this body, then whose father or whose mother am I? The supreme father and mother is Krsna. We are simply playing the parts of father, mother, sister, or brother, as if on stage
- If I am not this body, then why should I act for this body? I should act for myself. Then, how can I work for myself? What is my position? I am consciousness. But what kind of? Subordinate consciousness - I am part of the supreme consciousness
- If I ask you what you are, you will say, "I am Mr. John; I am a rich man; I am this; I am that." All these are bodily identifications. But you are not this body. This is illusion
- If I say to a dog, "Mr. Dog, you are not this body; you are soul," what he will understand? The same position of the so-called human society
- If one understands that "I am not this body; I am spirit soul," he is called atmavit, or he is liberated. He is not bodily conscious platform. There are three platforms of identification with self
- If there is real jnana, then there will be vairagya. Because we are suffering on account of an attachment to this material world, so jnana means that, I have nothing to do with this material world because I am not this material body
- If we are mistaken about our identity, we will also be mistaken about our activities. Simply knowing that we are not these material bodies is not sufficient; we must act according to the conviction that we are spiritual
- If we ask people who they are, they reply, "I am Hindu, I am Moslem, I am Swedish, I am American, I am Christian, etc." These are various identifications or designations of the body, but the fact is that we are not these bodies
- If we say frankly, everyone is in the bodily concept of life. Therefore the modern civilization is animal civilization. It is not human civilization. Human civilization will begin when one will understand that - I am not this body. I am spirit soul
- If we simply understand that we are not the body, that we are spirit soul, our knowledge is insufficient. We must also act as Brahman; then our position will be fixed
- If we want to make progress towards spiritual advancement of knowledge, this preliminary knowledge we must have that, - I am not this body
- If you analyze yourself silently, "What I am? I am this finger? I am this body? I am this hair?" you will deny, "No, I am not this." So beyond this body, what is, that is spiritual. That we can feel
- If you chant Hare Krsna mantra, then gradually, by this bhakti-yoga process, we shall understand that, "I am not this body, but I am a spirit soul," aham brahmasmi
- If you remain on the material platform and artificially desire no discrimination it is not possible. We are preaching therefore this Krishna consciousness movement so that we may not have material discrimination. The soul has nothing to do with the body
- If you take the word in a real sense, the survival of the fittest, one who has understood that he is not this body, he is spirit soul, he is fit to survive
- If you want to become happy, first of all we must get this knowledge, that "I am not this body."
- If you want to know what is the science of this movement, we can spare day and night to convince you. But these are superficial. First of all we say that, "We are not this body." So why we shall be interested with the history of this body?
- In relation with body, we think of family, community, nationality. In this way our civilization is dog civilization. That is not human civilization. Human civilization begins when one understands that he is not this body
- In the human life, two things required: jnana and vairagya. Jnana means that, "I am not this body." This is jnana. Not that so-called scientific knowledge, more attachment for this body. That is ajnana. That is not jnana
- In the Second Chapter of Bhagavad-gita, the Supreme Lord explained that a living entity is not the material body; he is a spiritual spark. And the Absolute Truth is the spiritual whole
- In the Second Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita Krsna has begun the philosophy of Bhagavad-gita from this point, that "I am not this body." This is the beginning of spiritual knowledge
- In yoga one should have not only theoretical knowledge but practical knowledge. Simply understanding "I am not this body" and at the same time acting in a nonsensical way will not help
- It is not simply a matter of saying "I am not this body," but of actually realizing it. This is not as simple as it may seem at first
- It is the medicine recommended in the sastra, ceto-darpana-marjanam. That dust of ignorance is moved. He can understand that, "I am not this body, I am spirit soul, part and parcel of Krsna. My duty is to serve Krsna." In this way, he becomes enlightened
J
- Jada Bharata was completely liberated. He did not even care when the dacoits attempted to kill his body; he knew that he certainly was not the body
- Jnana (or knowledge that one is not this material body but spirit soul) is not sufficient for liberation. BG 1972 purports
- Jnana means to understand that "I am not this material body. I do not belong to this material body. I am a spirit soul. I am part and parcel of Krsna. Krsna is the Supreme Spirit, and I belong to the spiritual world"
- Just knowing "I am not this body but am spirit soul" is not sufficient. We have to escape this entanglement of material nature. This is called mukti, liberation
K
- Karma means work. One should not think that "Because I am not this body, so I shall cease to work." No. You cannot cease to work. If you cease to work, then idle brain will be a devil's workshop. No
- KC is so beneficial it easily counteracts material nature's contamination resulting from one's possessing a material body. BG therefore teaches, in the beginning, that whether one is man or woman one must know he or she isn't the body but a spiritual soul
- Knowledge means self-realization, that "I am not this body; I am spirit soul." That is knowledge
- Krsna consciousness movement is completely different from ordinary movement. This is spiritual movement. This movement begins when one understands that he is not this body
L
- Liberation means knowledge and detachment. Knowledge, full knowledge, means that - I am not this body; I am spirit soul, and my bodily activities are not congenial for my ultimate goal of life. I must engage myself in spiritual activity."
- Lord Caitanya says that "Simply by thinking that 'I am not this matter; I am spirit soul, aham brahmasmi. I am Brahman,' that will not help you to get liberation"
- Lord Krsna advises that we should act with knowledge of, or devotion to the Supreme. What does that knowledge mean? It means that I am the part and parcel of the supreme consciousness, or that I am not this body
M
- Manisinah - this word is very significant. Manisi means thoughtful. Unless one is thoughtful, he cannot understand that he is not this body. But if one is a little thoughtful he can understand, - Oh, I am not this body. I am consciousness
- Merging into Brahman in perfect knowledge means understanding perfectly that one is not the body but a spiritual soul
N
- No, no. I withdraw that word false. But it is not you. It is false in this sense, that you are accepting this body yourself, but that you are not
- Nobody is thinking that "I am increasing the requisites of the body, but I am not this body; I am soul. What is the requisition of the soul?" they have forgotten. Real interest they have forgotten
O
- On the Battlefield of Kuruksetra, Arjuna said to Krsna, - Whatever You are saying is all right. I am not this body. I am a soul, and this is also true of everyone else. So when the body is annihilated, the soul will continue to exist
- One has to be situated in full knowledge, and full knowledge is . . . the beginning of knowledge is that one must understand that, "I am not this body." This is knowledge
- One has to get free from the bodily conception of life. That is the preliminary activity for a transcendentalist who wants to get free, who wants to be liberated. And he has to learn first of all that he is not this material body
- One has to realize that "I am not this body." Kevalam prakrteh param. "I am beyond this body, far, transcendental to this material world
- One should have knowledge perfectly, and it must be demonstrated. Demonstrated in practical field. Yes. But that means one who has actually felt himself that, "I am not this body," then naturally his bodily necessities will be reduced to the minimum
- One should have very clear knowledge that "I am not this body. This is my body." You are not this body; it is your body. You are spirit; I am spirit. We are different from this body. This is the first instruction given in the BG in the beginning
- One should recognize the difference between activities of the body and spiritual activities by which one understands that he is not the body. BG 1972 purports
- One who knows that he is not the body is not disturbed, for he knows the soul cannot be caught, tortured, killed or buried
- One who truly understands "I am not this body" will actually reduce his bodily necessities to a minimum. When one increases the demands of the body while thinking "I am not this body," then of what use is that knowledge
- Only after realizing that we are not these bodies can we enter into real knowledge and understand what we actually are. This then, is the beginning of knowledge
- Only when a person is perfectly situated in the realization that he isn't the body but a spirit soul can he begin the process of bhakti, or devotional service
- Our education should be based on that "I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement. Caitanya Mahaprabhu declared that "I am not a brahmana, I am not a ksatriya, I am not a grhastha, I am not this or that"
- Our first proposition is that "You are not this body; you are spirit soul. Some way or other, you are in contact with this material world, and you have got this material body, and under illusion, you are accepting something which you are not"
- Our Krsna consciousness movement is educating people that "You are not this body, not this mind, not this intelligence, but above this. You are spirit soul." So Krsna confirms that mamaivamsa
- Our Krsna consciousness movement is trying to educate people on this science of sciences to understand first of all that "What you are? Are you this body or different from this body?" This is essential
- Our movement begins when one understands that he is soul or something other than this body
- Our philosophy is that we are not this body, outer tabernacle, but one must stick to our principles and live with us like other devotees
