Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda acknowledges the achievements of modern science in areas like atomic theory and embryology, but he fundamentally critiques its inability to address the most critical aspects of existence: the soul, the source of life, and the conquest of death. While modern science manipulates gross matter to create temporary comforts (and simultaneous discomforts), it remains ignorant of the subtle laws of nature and the spiritual dimension. It propagates the "nonsense" theory that life arises from chemicals and fails to produce even a small living being in the laboratory. In contrast, Vedic science deals with subtle energies—such as mantras and the brahmāstra—and provides a complete understanding of the universe and the self, offering a permanence that modern theories, which are constantly changing, cannot.

  • The Great Defect: Science deals only with matter and ignores the spirit soul and the ultimate cause (God).
  • Life from Matter: The theory that life comes from chemicals is rejected; scientists cannot create life.
  • Gross vs. Subtle: Modern weapons (nuclear) are gross chemical creations, whereas Vedic weapons (brahmāstra) utilized subtle sound vibration.
  • Uncertainty: Scientific calculations (e.g., distance to the sun, space travel) are subject to constant change, unlike the eternal Vedic conclusions.
  • The Goal: To spiritualize science by presenting Vedic truths through scientific logic, proving that Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the "topmost science."
