Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the root cause of material existence is the living entity's rebellious desire to enjoy life without Kṛṣṇa. Although the soul is constitutionally prakrti, or the energy meant to be enjoyed, it falsely assumes the role of purusa, the independent enjoyer. To facilitate this desire, the Supreme Lord provides various material bodies, from the demigods down to the animals, along with the illusory energy known as maya. However, because the soul is purely spiritual, it can never find actual happiness through blunt, covered material senses. True ananda, or eternal bliss, is only awakened when the living entity gives up the foolish attempt to imitate the Lord and instead dovetails their desires to serve and be enjoyed by Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

• The Pure Devotee's Standard: A genuine devotee does not want to be the enjoyer. Real spiritual life begins when one desires to be enjoyed by Kṛṣṇa, finding perfect, eternal happiness by sharing in the Lord's own transcendental pastimes.
