Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda details the transcendental nature of God's ornaments. Whether describing the molten-gold decorations of Lord Viṣṇu, the nose-ring of mother Sītā, or the jeweled necklaces of Lord Kṛṣṇa, these ornaments are not material. They are direct expansions of the Lord's spiritual energy and are completely non-different from Him. A striking philosophical point is that in the material world, ornaments beautify the physical body, but in the spiritual reality, the Lord is so inherently beautiful that His body actually beautifies the ornaments. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that while dressing the Deity with physical ornaments is an important part of temple worship, the real ornaments that truly decorate the Lord are enthusiastic preaching, purified chanting, and regulated pūjā.

  • The Absolute Nature of the Ornaments: Because the Lord is absolute, the beautiful, glittering ornaments decorating His transcendental body are non-different from Him.
  • The Supreme Source of Beauty: Unlike conditioned souls who rely on jewelry for beauty, the Supreme Lord's personal beauty actually enhances and glorifies the ornaments He wears.
  • The Perfection of Yogic Meditation: Advanced transcendentalists constantly meditate upon the Lord's form, moving their focus from His lotus feet up to His radiant face and His divine ornaments.
  • The True Decorations of Devotional Service: Beyond physical jewels and gold, the Lord is most pleased and decorated by the pure devotion, regulated worship, and enthusiastic preaching of His servants.
