The Vedic literatures are compared to a vast desire tree, containing knowledge for every aspect of life. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that one must seek the "essence" or the "ripened fruit" of this tree to gain true benefit, especially in the modern age. This essence is identified as the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and the Bhagavad-gītā. The Vedānta-sūtra represents the summary of Vedic knowledge, and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is its natural commentary. Ultimately, the purpose of all Vedic study is to know Kṛṣṇa (vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ). For the current age, the essence of all Vedic mantras and hymns is encapsulated in the chanting of the holy name of Kṛṣṇa.
