Anupama Mallika, originally known as Vallabha, was the younger brother of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī, and the father of Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī. He held the title "Mallika" due to his service in the Muslim government. Upon meeting Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, he received the name Anupama. A significant aspect of his life was his unshakeable devotion to Lord Rāmacandra; although he accepted Lord Caitanya as an incarnation of the Supreme Lord, he could not give up his worship of Lord Rāma for Rādhā-Govinda, a steadfastness that Lord Caitanya appreciated. Along with his brother Rūpa, he met the Lord at Prayāga (Allahabad), where they exhibited extreme humility, holding straw in their teeth and offering the famous prayer "namo mahā-vadānyāya." Lord Caitanya delivered them from the "well of material enjoyment" and engaged them in His service.
