The process of approaching the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a precise spiritual science. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the fundamental rule is that no one can approach God directly by their own limited potency or mental speculation. Because the Supreme Lord is completely pure (pavitraṁ paramam), a conditioned soul contaminated by the modes of material nature and sinful activities cannot enter His presence. The Absolute Truth is beyond the reach of blunt material senses and logic. The danger of this motivated approach is that if a person's material desires are not fulfilled, they may become frustrated and abandon spiritual life altogether. True perfection is achieved only by the pure devotee (akāma-bhakta), who approaches the Lord without any desire for material opulence or personal sense gratification, seeking only to render unalloyed loving service.

Furthermore, the method chosen to approach the Absolute Truth dictates the final destination. Philosophers and yogīs who attempt to approach the Supreme through empirical speculation or mechanical meditation can only reach the impersonal brahma-jyoti or the localized Paramātmā. However, those who adopt the path of bhakti-yoga—engaging the senses in practical devotional service, chanting the holy names, and worshiping the Deity (arcā-vigraha)—can easily and happily approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face. Ultimately, understanding how to properly approach Lord Viṣṇu is the single most important duty of human life.
