Theme Analysis
The mode of ignorance, or tamo-guṇa, is the lowest of the material qualities, characterized by a complete lack of knowledge and darkness. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes it as the opposite of the mode of goodness. While goodness brings illumination and happiness, ignorance brings madness, laziness, sleep, and delusion. People influenced by this mode are often addicted to intoxicants and sleep more than necessary. Their food habits involve eating stale, tasteless, or putrid things like meat and liquor. Religiously, they may worship ghosts or spirits. The ultimate result of acting in the mode of ignorance is degradation to the animal kingdom or hellish planetary systems. Lord Śiva is the presiding deity of this mode for the purpose of destruction, although he himself is transcendental.

- In the barbarian stage, or in the mode of ignorance, the senses are gratified in a very crude way, whereas in the mode of passion, or in civilized life, the senses are gratified in a polished manner

- The Earth personified continued, "When You (Krsna) want to maintain this cosmic manifestation You expand Yourself as Visnu, the reservoir of all goodness. Similarly, You appear as Siva, master of the mode of ignorance, & thus dissolve the whole creation"
- The elephant and the lion are embodiments of the passionate mode of nature, while the dog and the candala (dog-eater) are the embodiments of nature's mode of darkness, or ignorance
- The entire world is working under the influence of the modes of material nature, especially ignorance and passion, but if people engage in hearing and chanting about the glories of the Supreme Lord, their lives can be successful

- These animal sacrifices are recommended in the name of religion, but actually animal sacrifice is meant for persons in the mode of ignorance. When such people kill animals, they can at least do so in the name of religion
- These demigods (Kala-bhairava, Smasana-bhairava, Sani, Mahakali and Candika) are worshiped mostly by those who are in the lowest categories of the mode of darkness or ignorance
- These modes (sattva, rajas and tamas) are omnipresent in the material world, and as such, at every hour, every minute, every second, the process of creation, maintenance and annihilation is taking place all over the material universe

- Those who are in the mode of passion remain within this material world on the earth or on heavenly planets, but those who are in the mode of ignorance are degraded to an animal life on planets where life is lower than human
- Those who are in the mode of passion worship and create such gods, and those who are in the mode of ignorance, in darkness, worship dead spirits. Sometimes people worship at the tomb of some dead man. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are in the modes of goodness, their lust is a different quality. Those who are in passion, their lust is in different quality. Those who are ignorance, their lust is different quality
- Those who are in the modes of ignorance and passion are averse to the existence of God, or else they formally accept the existence of God in the capacity of an order supplier
- Those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance worship the forefathers, other living beings and the demigods who are in charge of cosmic activities, for they are urged by a desire to be materially benefited with women, wealth, power and progeny

- Those who are surcharged with the mode of ignorance are degraded to the lower planetary systems or to the animal kingdom. The demigods are highly developed in the mode of goodness, and thus they are situated in the heavenly planets
- Those who cannot avoid oversleeping, cannot avoid the pride of enjoying material objects & always dreaming of lording it over the material world, whose life, mind, & senses are thus engaged, are considered to be in the mode of ignorance. BG 1972 purports
- Those who cannot avoid oversleeping, who cannot avoid the pride of enjoying material objects, who are always dreaming of lording it over the material world...are considered to have determination in the mode of ignorance
- Those who die in the mode of passion remain on earth, and those who die in the mode of ignorance may fall into the animal species of life or may be transferred to a lower planet (BG 14.15). This is the process that has been going on, but we forget it
- Those who strongly desire to cross the ocean of nescience must not associate with the modes of ignorance, for hedonistic activities are the greatest obstructions to realization of religious principles, economic development, regulated sense gratification

- To go to the higher planetary system, one needs sufficient good qualities. A sinful person situated in the mode of ignorance and addicted to drinking, meat-eating and illicit sex will never enter the higher planets by mechanical means
- To live in the forest is in the mode of goodness, and to live in the city, or town, is in the mode of passion, and to live in slaughterhouse and brothel and drunkards, these are the residential quarter in ignorance
