Theme Analysis

The mode of ignorance, or tamo-guṇa, is the lowest of the material qualities, characterized by a complete lack of knowledge and darkness. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes it as the opposite of the mode of goodness. While goodness brings illumination and happiness, ignorance brings madness, laziness, sleep, and delusion. People influenced by this mode are often addicted to intoxicants and sleep more than necessary. Their food habits involve eating stale, tasteless, or putrid things like meat and liquor. Religiously, they may worship ghosts or spirits. The ultimate result of acting in the mode of ignorance is degradation to the animal kingdom or hellish planetary systems. Lord Śiva is the presiding deity of this mode for the purpose of destruction, although he himself is transcendental.

  • Symptoms: Laziness, excessive sleep (more than 6 hours), madness, and illusion.
  • Diet: Food that is tasteless, stale, putrid, decomposing, and unclean (meat, alcohol).
  • Worship: Worship of ghosts, spirits, and demons; performing sacrifices without scriptural direction.
  • Destination: Degradation to lower species (animals) or hellish worlds.
  • Controller: Lord Śiva is in charge of tamo-guṇa, managing the destructive aspect of material nature.
