Theme Analysis

The path of the perfect yogi, as delineated by Śrīla Prabhupāda, is defined by the complete mastery of the mind and senses through absorption in the Supreme. While the material world often associates yoga with physical postures, the Vedic scriptures define a perfect yogi as one who has disciplined the mind so thoroughly that it can no longer be disturbed by material desire. Such a yogi may possess the aṣṭa-siddhi, or eight mystic perfections—enabling them to become smaller than an atom, travel through space without mechanical aid, or control the moment of their death. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the highest stage of yoga is attained by the devotee who keeps Kṛṣṇa constantly within the heart. This Kṛṣṇa conscious person is the first-class mystic because their mind is naturally and effortlessly fixed on the source of all mystic power, reaching a level of joy and stability that even great sages like Viśvāmitra struggled to maintain through mere penance.

  • The Definition of Yoga Perfection: A perfect yogi is one whose mind is always absorbed in Kṛṣṇa's activities. This internal state of samādhi is superior to any external sitting posture or magical feat.
  • The Eight Mystic Siddhis: Through the practice of yoga, a perfected being can achieve super-achievements such as aṇimā-siddhi (becoming atom-sized), traveling to other planets at will, or counteracting the laws of nature.
  • Command Over Death and Transference: A perfect yogi has the competency to quit the body at the right moment and transfer the soul to a suitable planet or the spiritual world, a process described as being as easy as walking to a grocery store.
  • The Superiority of the Devotee-Yogi: While mystic yogis may hanker for material powers, the Kṛṣṇa conscious devotee is considered the topmost yogi. By simply thinking of Kṛṣṇa, they automatically achieve the results of all yoga practice without the risk of falling down due to a restless mind.
