Theme Analysis

The appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead as Lord Varāhadeva, the boar incarnation, is a profound demonstration of His supreme independence and inconceivable potency. While ordinary boars are considered impure and are forced into their bodies by the laws of karma, the Lord's form as a boar is completely transcendental, spiritual, and personifies the Vedic hymns (yajñāvayava). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that atheists and demons foolishly deride these animal incarnations, misunderstanding them to be ordinary beasts. However, great sages from higher planets immediately recognize His divine voice as the chanting of the Vedas and offer Him prayers. According to Vedic history, the Lord appeared as a boar in two different millenniums (Svāyambhuva and Cākṣuṣa), assuming different colors (white and red) to perform His pastimes. His primary mission in these forms was to dive into the filthy Garbhodaka Ocean to rescue the planet earth, lifting it effortlessly on His massive tusks like an elephant plucking a lotus flower, and to vanquish the formidable demon Hiraṇyākṣa.

  • The Transcendental Form: Unlike an ordinary hog, the body of Lord Varāha is completely spiritual and is composed of the Vedic hymns (yajñāvayava); therefore, it is supremely pure.
  • Rescuing the Earth: The Lord assumed this gigantic form specifically to dive into the filthy depths of the Garbhodaka Ocean, lift the earth on His tusks, and place it safely back in its orbit.
  • Vanquishing the Demon: During one of His appearances, Lord Varāha engaged in a fierce battle to kill the powerful demon Hiraṇyākṣa, who had cast the earth into the ocean.
  • Demoniac Misunderstanding vs. Pure Devotion: While atheists and demons deride the Lord's animal incarnations as ordinary beasts, pure devotees and great sages recognize His supremacy and offer Him transcendental prayers.
