Theme Analysis

Envy (matsarya or dveṣa) is the fundamental psychological barrier that separates the living entity from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the very entry into the material world is caused by envy of Kṛṣṇa—the desire to become the "all-in-all" and the primary enjoyer. Once in the material world, this envy manifests as one of the six enemies of the mind, leading to competition, hatred, and various sinful activities, including the unnecessary killing of animals. A central tenet of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is that its message is meant only for those who are "nirmatsara" (completely free from envy). While material envy leads to hellish suffering, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that there is a "transcendental envy" in the spiritual sky, such as among the gopīs, which is actually a symptom of intense love and a desire to excel in serving Kṛṣṇa.

  • The Origin of the Soul's Fall: Envy begins with being jealous of Kṛṣṇa's position. This mentality leads to the "I am God" philosophy and the struggle for material supremacy.
  • The Symptom of a Vaisnava: A devotee is defined as being the friend of all living entities (suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānam), meaning they are free from the urge to deride or impede others' progress.
  • Social and Global Impact: Envy is the root cause of fear and enmity in society. Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies nuclear advancement and animal slaughter as direct results of an envious heart.
  • The Process of Purification: By engaging in the saṅkīrtana movement and praying to Lord Nṛsiṁha-deva to sit in our hearts, one can cleanse the mind of all envious germs.
