Theme Analysis

This analysis addresses the fundamental defect of the conditioned soul: 'becoming envious'. Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies envy (mātsarya) as the root cause of our falldown from the spiritual world. We became envious of Kṛṣṇa’s position as the supreme enjoyer and controller, and thus we were sent to this material world to enact our own fantasies of lordship. This envy permeates all material relationships—nations envy nations, neighbors envy neighbors, and even friends envy friends when one achieves success. The analysis highlights the supreme danger of becoming envious of the spiritual master or other Vaiṣṇavas, which leads to spiritual ruin, and contrasts this with the Vaikuṇṭha atmosphere where devotees are never envious but rather inspired by another's superior service.

  • The Original Sin: The desire to be God ("Why shall I be a servant?") is the seed of material existence.
  • Universal Contamination: In the material world, envy is ubiquitous. If one gets a little prominence, others immediately try to pull them down.
  • The Greatest Danger: Envy directed at the ācārya or pure devotees (as seen in the case of Dakṣa toward Śiva) causes immediate falldown from the path of bhakti.
  • The Cure: The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is specifically designed to train people to become non-envious (nirmatsara) by chanting the holy name and serving the servants of God.
