Theme Analysis
Fear of death arises when the living being forgets the soul's eternal nature and identifies with the temporary body. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that everyone in material consciousness fears death, whether human, animal, demigod, scientist, king, or demon, because the body must end and no material arrangement can stop it. Real fearlessness comes only when the soul takes shelter of Kṛṣṇa through devotional service, hearing, chanting, remembrance, and surrender.
- Universal Fear: Death frightens every embodied being because the body is temporary and always under the control of time. Material strength, intelligence, social position, or scientific advancement cannot remove this fear.
- Bodily Identification: Fear of death comes from mistaking the body for the self. When the living being forgets that the soul is eternal, the end of the body appears as the end of existence.
- Old Age as Warning: The approach of old age should awaken spiritual seriousness rather than denial. A sane person uses the notice of death as an impetus to seek the Supreme Lord.
- Fearless Shelter: One who surrenders to Kṛṣṇa is not afraid of death because the soul's eternal shelter has been found. Devotional service prepares the heart to meet death through remembrance of the Lord.
