- According to Lord Buddha, his theory is that due to the combination of material elements, this body has come into existence. Now, some way or other, if these material elements are separated or dismantled, then the cause of distress is removed
- Uddhava Gita: 16 - Enumeration of the Elements of Material Creation
A
- A car or house is actually made of material elements; as long as the material elements combine together properly, the car or house exists, and when they are disassembled the house or the car is disassembled
- A combination of the material energy and the spiritual energy, the living entity, exists in every creation. Therefore the same principle, the combination of the supreme spirit and the material elements, is the cause of the cosmic manifestation
- A nondevotee or atheist also cultivates God consciousness - by trying to avoid God in everything. For example, so-called scientists who want to create life by a combination of chemicals regard the external, material elements as supreme
- A pure devotee of the Lord does not live on any planet of the material sky, nor does he feel any contact with material elements
- Accompanying Him (God) were all of the seven primary elements - the five material elements, the total energy (mahat-tattva) and the false ego. This entrance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead involves His entering even the atoms of the material world
- According to the Ayur-vedic system, the body is composed of three material elements: kapha-pitta-vayu. The more we are in the bodily conception, the more we suffer
- According to the results of a living entity's fruitive actions, he is forced to enter the material elements in different types of bodies
- According to them (atheistic, materialistic Sankhyaites), combinations of material elements are the causes of material happiness and distress, and disintegration of matter is the cause of freedom from all material pangs
- Actually lust and sex are there in spiritual life, but when the spirit soul is embodied in material elements, that spiritual urge is expressed through the material body and is therefore pervertedly reflected
- Actually, death means annihilation of the present body. As soon as the present body stops functioning and mixes with the five elements of material nature, the living entity within the body accepts another body
- Actually, the individual souls have spiritual senses, but in condemned life they are covered with the material elements and therefore the sense activities are exhibited through matter. BG 1972 purports
- After self-realization of the Absolute, that is Aha brahmasmi (I am spirit), I am not made up of material elements, earth, water, fire, and air, No! This body of ours is made up of earth, fire, water, air , sky, of all these elements
- Akrura continued, "As the five material elements - earth, water, fire, air and sky - are distributed in everything manifested by different kinds of bodies, so You (Krsna and Balarama) alone enter the various bodies created by Your own energy"
- All material elements as well as all spiritual sparks emanate from Him only. And whatever is created in this material world is but the interaction of two energies, the material and the spiritual, which emanate from the Absolute Truth, Sri Krsna
- All material elements, as well as the spiritual sparks (individual souls), are emanating from the SP of Godhead. This is confirmed by the Vedanta-sutra (1.1): janmady asya yatah (SB 1.1.1).The Absolute Truth is He from whom everything emanates
- All of them (the material elements, the living entities and material nature) together are recipients of power from the Supreme Personality of Godhead and are thus able to manifest their individual capacities
- All the experts in Vedic understanding are searching for You by eliminating the material elements. In this way, searching and searching, they come to the conclusion that everything is complete in You. Thus You are the resort of everything
- All the material elements may be present in a dead man, but we cannot revive that man to consciousness. This body is not like a machine
- All the material qualities evolve one after another in the material elements, beginning from ether. By gradual evolution, first one quality develops, then two qualities develop, then three and four, until all five qualities are found in earth
- All these eight elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego), they are material. One section is gross, and another section is subtle. So the psychology means the subtle material elements. It is material; it is not spiritual
- Although a devotee appears to be merged in the five material elements, the objects of material enjoyment, the material senses and material mind and intelligence, he is understood to be awake and to be freed from the false ego
- Although all living entities are of one spiritual nature, in quality the same as the SPG, they have varieties of bodies due to the embodiment of the spirit soul by the eight material elements, namely earth, water, fire, air, sky, mind, intelligence & ego
- Although He is concentrated spirit soul without material variety, for the benefit of the conditioned soul He nevertheless accepts different types of sacrifice performed with various material elements
- Although in conditional life the living entity is surrounded by material elements (earth, water, fire, air, sky, mind, intelligence and ego), he remains always aloof from them
- Although the arca-murti, the worshipable Deity form of the Lord, appears to be made of material elements, it is as good as the spiritual forms found in the spiritual Vaikunthalokas
- Although the living entity is aloof from the material elements, he is put into material conditions, and thus he must suffer the reactions of material activities
- Although the material elements emanate from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, they are separated elements and are sustained by the living elements
- Although the material, or physical, elements are the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they are separate. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is therefore not affected by material conditions
- Among created manifestations, the total material elements are first created by Maha-Visnu and are annihilated by Lord Siva. Brahma is the secondary creator. BG 1972 purports
- An impious man who dies after sinful activities is sometimes condemned so that he cannot possess a gross material body of five material elements, but must live in a subtle body of mind, intelligence and ego
- Antar hrdayad, in the core of the heart the individual soul and the Supersoul is there, and Yamaraja will take, his order carriers will take the, not the heart, but the soul. The heart of the body, that is made of this material element
- Any material construction is nothing but an amalgamation or combination of material elements in varied proportions. These elements exist both within and beyond the body
- Any material element can be cut to pieces. As far as the living entity is concerned, however, he can be neither burned nor cut to pieces. We can conclude that there are also living entities within the sun
- Anyone would conclude that Hiranyakasipu was dead because his body was covered in so many ways, but Lord Brahma, the supreme living being in this universe, could understand that Hiranyakasipu was alive but covered by material elements
- Apart from the separate existence of the soul, the material elements remain unmanifested before creation
- Apart from the separate existence of the soul, the material elements remain unmanifested before creation. BG 1972 purports
- As clearly said in Bhagavad-gita (BG 7.4), bhinna prakrtir astadha: the material elements are separated energies of the Supreme Lord. If He transforms Himself into the arca-murti, the worshipable Deity, which we see as stone or wood, He is still Krsna
- As clearly stated in Bhagavad-gita (mamaivamso jiva-loke jiva-bhutah (BG 15.7)), the living entities do not arise from a combination of material elements, such as earth, water, air & fire, but are separated portions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead
- As stated in Bhagavad-gita (BG 2.20), the living entity is never created (na jayate mriyate va kadacin). There are five gross material elements and three minor material elements (mind, intelligence and ego), and there are eternal living entities
- As stated in the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam, water is the cementing ingredient of different material elements. If we build a house, water is actually the constituent in making the bricks
- As the elements of the material body are eternal, the living entity who appears through these material elements is also eternal
- As the source of the material elements, the material energy is known as pradhana, and as the source of the manifestations of the material energy it is known as maya. But material nature is inert in that she has no independent power to do anything
- At the present moment, throughout the entire world, the atheists are extremely numerous. They are trying to prove that there is no God and that everything takes place due to combinations and permutations of material elements
- Atheistic Sankhya philosophers like Kapila analyze the material elements very scrutinizingly and thereby come to the conclusion that material nature is the cause of everything
- Atma, or self, is distinguished from matter and material elements. It is spiritual in constitution, and thus it is never satisfied by any amount of material planning
B
- Balarama and Krsna are the original efficient and material causes of the material world. As Maha-Visnu and the material energy, They enter into the material elements and create the diversities by multi-energies. Thus They are the cause of all causes
- Before the creation and after its dissolution, only the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His associates exist; there is no existence of the material elements. This is confirmed in the Vedic literature
- Besides this universe of our experience, there are innumerable other universes. Some of them are bigger than the present one, and all of them are clustered together under similar material elements
- Bhagavad-gita indicates that this material body is not all in all. Beyond this combination of material elements, there is spirit, and the symptom of that spirit is consciousness
- Body is a drop in the bigger material elements. That does not mean your body has become the whole material elements. Similarly, a drop of ocean water is drop always. It does not become ocean
- Buddha maintained that due to a combination of material elements, this body has come into existence, and that somehow or other if these material elements are separated or dismantled, the cause of suffering is removed
- By higher understanding one can know that the material body is nothing but a combination of the five material elements
- By such activities (unauthorized fasting or austerities), not only are the combination of material elements of which the body is constructed disturbed, but also the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself living within the body. BG 1972 purports
- By the mercy of the arca-vigraha, the form of the Lord in material elements, the devotees who are in the material world can easily approach the Lord, although He is not conceivable by the material senses
E
- Each universe is covered by various layers of material elements, and therefore although the universes are clustered together, we cannot see from one universe to another. In other words, whatever we see is within this one universe
- Earth, water, air, fire, ether - these are the five material elements. In some planet the earth is prominent; in some planet the water is prominent; in other planet the fire is prominent. So this is the creation of God, different varieties
- Empiric philosophers, unable to go beyond these (24 material) elements (5 gross and 3 subtle), 5 knowledge-acquiring senses, 5 active senses, 5 objects of sense pleasure & mahat-tattva, speculate that anything beyond them must be avyakta or inexplicable
- Even logically we can understand that all material elements are expansions of the energy of the Lord
- Even the nuclear weapons of the modern age are classified as fire weapons, but formerly there were other weapons made of all different types of material elements. BG 1972 purports
- Every one of us is a spiritual being (aham brahmasmi), and every one of us is an individual person. Our senses are now covered by material elements, and because of ignorance we consider the material senses that cover us to be our real senses
- Everything belongs to Krsna. What is the body? It is a combination of material elements - earth, water, fire, air, and the subtle, psychological elements mind, intelligence, and false ego
- Everything here in the material world is spiritual reflection covered by the material elements. So when this sound is purified or you catch up the spiritual sound, then your spiritual life begins
F
- First the total material energy is manifested, and from this arise the three types of egotism, which are the original sources from which all demigods (controlling deities), senses and material elements expand
- From that Personality of Godhead, all the universal globes and the universal form with all material elements, qualities and senses are generated. Yet He is aloof from such material manifestations, like the sun, which is separate from its rays and heat
- From the mahat-tattva all the other twenty-four divisions have sprung, namely the eleven senses (including the mind), the five sense objects, the five material elements, and then consciousness, intelligence and false ego
- From the total energy, the mahat-tattva, I have manifested the false ego, the three modes of material nature, the five material elements, the individual consciousness, the eleven senses & the material body. Similarly, the universe has come from the SPG
H
- He (the living entity) can neither be burnt by fire, cut by sharp weapons, moistened by water, nor dried by the air. He is completely different from the physical elements, but by a superior arrangement he is put into these material elements
- He is also present in the varieties of material creations and in the material elements, the total material energy and the modes of material nature (sattva-guna, rajo-guna and tamo-guna), as well as the unmanifested material nature and the false ego
- Here (in SB 6.16.4) it is made clear that the living being enters a material body that is like a machine created by the five gross elements of material nature (earth, water, fire, air and sky) and the three subtle elements - mind, intelligence and ego
- Here (SB 4.29.74) it is also explained that the living entity comes in contact with the sixteen material elements and is influenced by the three modes of material nature
- Here is clear proof (those two principal doorkeepers of the Personality of Godhead have now entered the womb of Diti) of how a living entity coming originally from Vaikunthaloka is encaged in material elements
- Herein (SB 2.7.47) also the same is affirmed in the statements about the material elements; they are all transcendental, free from all contamination of material identification
- Herein (SB 6.16.51) it is said, aham vai sarva-bhutani: the Lord is everything (sarva-bhutani), including the living entities and the material or physical elements
I
- I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is greater than any of us and under whose control are situated all the demigods, material elements and senses, and even Lord Brahma and I myself, like birds bound by a rope
- If one wants to see the Absolute Truth in full, one has to penetrate beyond the twenty-four material elements and the glaring effulgence as well
- If the directors of the different material elements do not work properly, they are punished by their master, Krsna
- Impersonalists do not take to devotional service, but take to other practices, such as the analytical study of the material elements, the discrimination between matter and spirit, and the mystic yoga system
- In actuality no one is independent in the material creation; the hand of the Supreme Lord is everywhere. All material elements, as well as all spiritual sparks, are but emanations from Him only
- In Krsna consciousness we become aware that earth, water, fire, air and every active principle, all chemicals and all material elements are due to Krsna. BG 1972 purports
- In modern education there is no knowledge about the spirit; they are simply taking care of the material elements and bodily needs. Therefore academic knowledge is not complete. BG 1972 purports
- In studying one's own body, one must ask himself whether his head is his soul, his fingers are his soul, his hand is his soul, and so on. In this way, one must gradually reject all the material elements & the combinations of material elements in the body
- In that city (the material body) there are five gardens, nine gates, one protector, three apartments, six families, five stores, five material elements, and one woman who is lord of the house
- In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakrtim para jiva-bhutam maha-baho (BG 7.5). Prakrti means female, enjoyed. So jiva is described in the Bhagavad-gita as prakrti. The first prakrti is the material elements, eight
- In the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna says that these material elements - earth, water, air, fire, mind, intelligence, ego - they are bhinna me prakrti astadha (BG 7.4). Prakrti. He is purusa. Prakrti means female. So they are also all energy
- In the Bhagavad-gita, the living beings are designated as para-prakrti, or the superior potency. The material elements are apara-prakrti, or inferior potency
- In the developed stage of consciousness, the human being can study both physiological and physical science, but the basic principles of such sciences are nothing but the material elements and nothing more
- In the higher sense, since all material elements ultimately emanate from the supreme spiritual entity, nothing is really material. Being omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, Krsna can deal with His devotee in any form without difficulty
- In the material world that brahmajyoti the Lord's spiritual effulgence, is covered by the mahat-tattva, the material elements; therefore in this material world we require the assistance of sun, moon, electricity, etc., for light. BG 1972 purports
- Indeed, the system of yoga is the process of transcending the influence of the material elements by establishing a connection with the purusa known as Paramatma
- Inferior energy consists of the five gross and three subtle material elements. The living entity, who represents the superior energy, appears in different types of bodies through these elements by the manipulation or supervision of the material energy
- It is admitted by all schools of philosophy, that the living being is eternal and that the covering body of the five material elements is perishable and temporary
- It is recommended in the Vedic scriptures that a deity may be made from different kinds of material elements: it can be painted, made of metal, made of jewels, made of wood, earth or stone or can be conceived within the heart of the worshiper
- It is said in the Brahma-samhita that Lord Govinda, by His one plenary portion, enters into the halo of the universe & distributes himself as Paramatma, not only within the heart of every living being, but also within every atom of the material elements
J
- Jambavan said further, "Not only are You the creator of the creators, but You are also the creator of the material elements which the so-called creators manipulate"
- Just as a woman can deliver a child after being impregnated by the semen of a man, so material nature can supply the material elements after being glanced upon by Maha-Visnu
- Just as sound is present in all material elements, the qualities found in santa-rasa are present in all devotees, whether they are on the platform of dasya-rasa, sakhya-rasa, vatsalya-rasa or madhura-rasa
- Just as sound vibration is found in all the material elements, these two qualities of santa-rasa are spread throughout all the other transcendental mellows, which are known as dasya-rasa, sakhya-rasa, vatsalya-rasa and madhura-rasa
- Just as the sun can act through the sunshine and thus distribute its heat and light, so Krsna, by His inconceivable power, can appear in His original spiritual form in any material element, including stone, wood, paint, gold, silver and jewels
K
- Kasyapa Muni continued: What is this material body, made of five elements? It is different from the spirit soul. Indeed, the spirit soul is completely different from the material elements from which the body is made
- King Nrga said, "However, those who live in the spiritual kingdom, the Vaikunthalokas, have bodies not made of material elements"
- Krsna is always Krsna, but because we cannot see anything beyond material elements like wood, stone, and metal, He appears in a form made of these elements. But He is neither wood, metal, nor stone
- Krsna is the source of both life and matter. There are two energies. One is superior energy; another, it is inferior energy. The material elements, they are inferior energy, and the superior energy - jiva-bhutam maha-baho
- Krsna says that these are the eight material elements: earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego. False ego means false identification
- Krsna says, "As the material elements enter the bodies of all living beings and yet remain outside them all, I exist within all material creations and yet am not within them"
- Krsna's name, attributes and form are Absolute Truth, existing before the creation. Therefore, how can those who are created - that is, those entrapped in bodies created of material elements - understand Krsna perfectly? This is not possible
L
- Life is not, however, a product of two secretions, but is independent of all material elements. As fully described in Bhagavad-gita, the living entity is not subject to any material reactions
- Living entities are compared to the sparks of fire. As stated in the previous verse (SB 3.28.40) fire, flame, smoke and firewood are combined together. Here the living entity, material elements and the Supreme Personality of Godhead are combined together
- Living entities have different material bodies composed of earth, water, air, fire and ether. The words tara madhye mean - within this universe. The entire material universe is composed of five material elements
- Lord Brahma clearly explained to Narada how the creation took place, and he explained one step after another the proper divisions of the senses, the controller of the senses, the objects of the senses, and the material elements
- Lord Siva prays to Lord Aniruddha as the sun-god, who is the controlling deity of the external material elements which constitute the construction of the material body
M
- Mahat-tattva, or the great causal truth, transforms into false ego, which is manifested in three phases - cause, effect and the doer. All such activities are on the mental plane and are based on the material elements, gross senses and mental speculation
- Maitreya said: When the equilibrium of the combination of the three modes of nature was agitated by the unseen activity of the living entity, by Maha-Visnu and by the force of time, the total material elements were produced
- Material nature gets the power to supply the material elements from the glance of the supreme purusa, Maha-Visnu, and when empowered by Him she is called the cause of the material manifestation
- Material world is composed of material elements, ingredients supplied by the mahat-tattva, the total material energy
- Matter is the secondary manifestation of spirit, for matter is produced from spirit. Just as the material elements are caused by the Supreme Lord, or the Supreme Spirit, the body is also a product of the spirit soul
- May it protect us from ghosts and the material elements like earth, water, fire and air, and may it also protect us from lightning and our past sins
- Mayavadis believe that Krsna has a body made of material elements and that the activities of loving service to Krsna are sentimentality
- Mother Durga, she is the mother. And God is the father. Just like father and mother gives birth to a child, similarly, we spirit soul, the part and parcel of the supreme father, and the material elements, bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh, they're the recipient
- Mother material nature cannot produce any living entity from her material elements unless and until she is impregnated with living entities by the Lord Himself. That is the mystery of the generation of the living entities
- My dear father, what is the source of your knowledge? Under whose protection are you standing? And under whom are you working? What is your real position? Do you alone create all entities with material elements by your personal energy
- My dear Lord, by Your own potencies You are the original cause of the material elements, as well as the performing instruments (the senses), the workers of the senses (the controlling demigods), the intelligence and the ego, as well as everything else
N
- Narada Muni said, "You (Krsna) are the supreme controller within their hearts. You are self-sufficient; before the creation, You existed, and by Your energy You have created all the material elements"
- No material scientific advancement can produce life. The living force comes from the spiritual world and has nothing to do with the interaction of the material elements
O
- O Lord in the form of Nrsimhadeva, You know how this (Hiranyakasipu) demon gave trouble to everyone, but now You have killed him, and his body is mixing with the five material elements
- O soul of everyone, You are the creator of this cosmic manifestation and all the material elements. I surrender unto You in Your transcendental form
- One has to perceive happiness by the supersenses. The supersenses are not the senses of the material elements
- One must try to understand that the material elements are the separated, inferior energy of the Lord and that the living entity is the Lord's spiritual energy
- One should not be disturbed by the action and reaction of these eight gross and subtle material elements. The practical process to attain this stage of indifference is to execute devotional service
- One who can see the constitution of the whole material manifestation as this combination of the soul and material elements and also can see the situation of the Supreme Soul becomes eligible for transfer to the spiritual world. BG 1972 purports
- One who is ignorant of the fact, he's materialist. And one who knows the source of this material elements, he is spiritualist. That is the difference
- Our outward covering is covered by these material elements, but inside, there is the spirit soul. Therefore one who is advanced, he does not see that "This is cat, this is dog, this is man, this is elephant, and this is brahmin." No. He sees the soul
- Our present senses are all made of material elements, and therefore they are imperfect in realizing the transcendental form of Lord Visnu. He is therefore worshiped by sound representation via the transcendental method of chanting
S
- Sarga: the first creation by Visnu, the bringing forth of the five gross material elements, the five objects of sense perception, the ten senses, the mind, the intelligence, the false ego and the total material energy, or universal form
- Since everything in the cosmic creation is dependent on the asraya-tattva - the creative manifestation or Visnu manifestation - the various demigods and manifestations of energy, the living entities and all material elements are dependent on Krsna
- Since the spirit soul is completely different from this combination of gross & subtle material elements My devotee who is connected with Me in intense friendship & affection being completely in knowledge is never agitated by material happiness & distress
- So-called scientists have tried in many ways to produce a living body in their chemical laboratories, but no one has been able to do it because unless the spirit soul is present, a body cannot be prepared from material elements
- Some of the living entities, they can live comfortably on land, some of them in the air. Similarly, why not some of them in fire? Because after all, fire is also one of the material elements
- Sri Isopanisad points out that one who worships the demigods and attains to their material planets still remains in the darkest region of the universe. The whole universe is covered by the gigantic material elements
- Sri Yamunacarya has prayed as follows: "My dear Lord, I know that the gigantic universe and gigantic space and time within the universe are covered by the ten layers of the material elements, each layer ten times larger than the previous one"
- Such scientists (who want to create life by a combination of chemicals regard the external, material elements as supreme) do not like the idea that life is part and parcel of the Supreme Lord
- Suppose your material body - earth, water, air, fire - now, when this body will be decomposed, so this form will not remain. Does it mean that your body has become the whole universal material elements?
T
- That body contained everything within the universe, including all the gross material elements, the senses, the sense objects, the mind, intelligence and false ego, the various kinds of living entities, and the actions
- The aim of life, that we are conditioned by this material nature, embodied by the material elements, and that is the cause of our all miserable condition of life
- The atheist Kapila tried to establish that there is no God who created the material world. Kapila has even tried to establish that a combination of material elements caused creation
- The atheistic philosophers, who do not agree to accept the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the original cause of creation, think that the material world moves by the action and reaction of different material elements
- The Bhagavad-gita begins with the problems of life by discriminating the soul from the elements of matter and proves by all reason and argument that the soul is indestructible in all circumstances
- The body is an effect of a cause, namely the five material elements (earth, water, fire, air and sky). In other words, one should know perfectly well that the material body is nothing but a combination of the five elements
- The body of the ordinary living being is made of material elements and is therefore subject to birth and death. But the Lord's body, being all spiritual and thus eternal, neither takes birth nor dies
- The Brahma-samhita clearly describes Brahman, "The living entities, space, time and the material elements like fire, earth, sky, water and mind constitute the total cosmic manifestation, known as Bhuh, Bhuvah and Svah, which is manifested by Govinda"
- The buildings, furniture, cars, bungalows, mills, factories, industries, peace, war or the highest perfection of material science, atomic energy & electronics, are all bewildering names of material elements with concomitant reactions of the three modes
- The contact of the spiritual spark with material elements creates a knot which must be cut if one wants to be liberated from the actions and reactions of fruitive work. Liberation means freedom from the cycle of reactionary work
- The conversation between Lord Sri Krsna and the brahmana is proof that the Lord in His arca-murti, or form made of material elements, is not material, for those elements, although separated from the Lord, are also a part of the Lord’s energy
- The cosmic manifestation consists of earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and false ego. These eight material elements are separated material energies, and we can understand that behind these energies there must be an energetic source
- The cosmic manifestation, which is made of material elements, has no power to act unless it is moved by the superior energy, the living entity
- The desires in the subtle body of mind, intelligence and ego cannot be fulfilled without a gross body composed of the material elements earth, water, air, fire and ether
- The earth (mahi) contains all our requirements. Thus the objects of sense perception are all present in bhumi, or the earth. The gross material elements and subtle elements (mind, intelligence and ahankara, false ego) constitute the total material energy
- The earth, water, fire, air and ether of Vaikuntha are all spiritual. Material elements are not found there
- The entire material world is a display of sixteen diversities and eight material elements. The analytical studies of the material world are the subject matter of Sankhya philosophy
- The entire universe was in trouble because of Hiranyakasipu, but now that Hiranyakasipu's body was mixing with the five material elements - earth, water, fire, air and sky - everyone felt relief
- The etymological meaning of sankhya is "that which explains very lucidly by analysis of the material elements." This was done for the first time by Lord Kapila, who is said herein (SB 1.3.10) to be the fifth in the line of incarnations
- The explanation of pradhana and prakrti is that pradhana is the subtle, undifferentiated sum total of all material elements. Although they are undifferentiated, one can understand that the total material elements are contained therein
- The fire is also Krsna because fire is one of the five material elements and is therefore claimed as the separated energy of Krsna. BG 1972 purports
- The five material elements are existing inside and outside of every living entity. Similarly, I, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, am manifest within the heart of the devotee as well as outside his body
- The five material elements, the ten senses and the mind all combine to form the various parts of the gross and subtle bodies
- The flickering mind will hover on the platform of mental speculation for sense enjoyment, and one will have to transmigrate from one type of body to another because the mind is trained only in relation to the material elements or sense gratification
- The gigantic universal form of the Personality of Godhead, within the body of the universal shell, which is covered by sevenfold material elements, is the subject for the virat conception
- The goddess Durga is the superintending deity of this material world, which is made of material elements
- The great elements of material creation, namely earth, water, fire, air & ether, all enter into the body of all manifested entities - the seas, mountains, aquatics, plants, reptiles, birds, beasts, human beings, demigods and everyone materially manifested
- The gross body is composed of earth, water, fire, air and ether. The subtle body is composed of mind, intelligence and ego. Of the eight material elements, five are gross and three are subtle
- The gross material elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether) combine with the subtle material elements (mind, intelligence and false ego) to construct the bodies of this material world, and yet they are beyond these bodies as well
- The gross material elements are earth, water, fire, air and ether, and the subtle material elements are mind, intelligence and ego. All of them are controlled by the Supreme Personality of Godhead as Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha
- The heart is covered by the three modes of material nature and the nine material elements (material nature, the total material energy, the ego, the mind and the five objects of sense gratification), and also by the five material elements & the ten senses
- The heart of the body, that is made of material element; that will lie down here. But the soul will be taken; there is arrangement. This is very, very subtle arrangement, and these rascals, they do not know how things are going on. They are imagining
- The individual souls have spiritual senses, but in conditioned life they are covered with the material elements, and therefore the sense activities are exhibited through matter
- The interaction of the material modes is the cause of false identification, or the sense that a living being is made of material elements. This false ego is the cause of identifying the body and mind with the soul proper
- The living being is practically the dominating factor over the material elements as the enjoyer, though the background is the Supreme Lord
- The living entities are the superior energy, and the inanimate material elements are His inferior energy. In the dormant stage, everything rests in Krsna
- The living entity has a body, which is a very complicated combination of the material elements, and with this body he struggles alone
- The living entity is actually separate from material existence, for the soul is not material. In BG it is also said that the living entity is the superior energy, and the material elements - earth, water, fire, air and so on - are the inferior energy
- The living entity is covered by three subtle material elements and five gross material elements. These are actually obstacles placed before the living entity on the path of liberation from material bondage
- The living entity is different from the material elements, and the supreme living entity, the Personality of Godhead, who is the creator of the material elements, is also different from the individual living entity
- The living entity is individual, but the body is a composition of many material elements. This is proved by the fact that as soon as the living entity quits this combination of material elements, it becomes a mere conglomeration of matter
- The living entity tries to lord it over the material or physical elements, but both the physical elements and the spiritual spark are energies emanating from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore He says, aham vai sarva-bhutani: "I am everything"

- The material elements also come from the body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but they are a different type of energy from the living entities
- The material elements are accepted as the inferior energy of Krsna. By their interaction the cosmic manifestation takes place, rests on Krsna, and after dissolution again enters into the body of Krsna as His subtle energy
- The material elements are also described (SB 4.29.23-25) as bhinna, or separated energy. When the internal or superior energy comes in contact with the external energy, it is subjected to so many tribulations
- The material elements are described, the mind, intelligence and false ego. What's the . . . what is that mind, you know, that material mind? In other words, there's a spiritual mind and a material mind
- The material elements cannot be the cause of the material creation. Although the material elements are accepted as immediate causes, the ultimate cause is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself
- The material elements were created for the enjoyment of the living entities
- The material energy is working. This cosmic manifestation made of earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and ego are the eight ingredients of this material manifestation. So these eight material elements, they are energies, separated energy
- The material energy means these eight kinds of material elements. Bhumir apo 'nalo vayuh: earth, water, fire, air, sky, mind, intelligence, and ego. These are all material
