The concept of independent human intellect is a fundamental illusion. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, all intelligence, memory, and forgetfulness emanate directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord is situated in the core of everyone's heart as the Supersoul (Paramātmā), acting as the ultimate witness and the supreme director. Just as the rays of the sun emanate from the sun globe, the mind, senses, ego, and intelligence of every living entity are energetic expansions provided and maintained by the Lord.
The distribution of this intelligence is perfectly tailored to the desires of the individual soul. If a living entity wants to enjoy the material world and improve their worldly position, the Lord gives them the requisite intelligence to do so. More profoundly, if a demoniac person wants to challenge or forget God, the Lord perfectly facilitates this desire. He provides such individuals with the exact intelligence and arguments needed to perpetually convince themselves that "God is dead" or that God does not exist.
However, the supreme use of God-given intelligence is in the pursuit of self-realization. When the Supersoul sees that a conditioned soul is serious about escaping the clutches of māyā (illusion), He gives them the intelligence from within to approach a spiritual master from without. For those already engaged in loving devotional service, the Lord provides a special spiritual enlightenment known as jñāna-dīpa. Even if a neophyte devotee approaches God with material motives, the Lord is so exceptionally kind that He gradually gives them the intelligence to abandon their material desires and find ultimate satisfaction solely in His transcendental service.
