- The material qualities are three, namely goodness, passion and ignorance. When one is placed into the mixed material qualities of passion and ignorance, various kinds of greed and lusty desires impel him to try to find comfort in this material world
- The material world is a creation of changing modes of nature. These modes - gunas are known as sattva - goodness, rajas - passion and tamas - ignorance
- The material world is created by the mode of rajas, maintained by the mode of sattva, and annihilated by the mode of tamas
- The material world is governed by the material modes of nature. Visnu, Brahma & Siva respectively take charge of the modes of goodness, passion, ignorance. Prthu is also an incarnation of those qualities of Krsna by which one rules over conditioned souls
- The mind belongs to the mode of goodness and therefore is called devamaya, or godly. Perfect purification of the mind is made possible when one is fixed in the conviction of being the eternal servitor of the Lord
- The mind is conducted by the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance. There are eleven senses and five material elements, and out of these sixteen items, the mind is the chief

- The modes of material nature (goodness, passion & ignorance), as well as material time, have no influence on the Vaikuntha planets. On those planets the liberated associates of Krsna live eternally, & they are worshiped both by the demigods & the demons
- The moon-god is in the mode of goodness, whereas Lord Brahma is in the mode of passion and Lord Siva is in the mode of ignorance
- The Nagapatnis said, "In the matter of creating this cosmic manifestation, personally You (Krsna) have nothing to exert; by expanding Your different kinds of energy - namely the modes of passion, goodness & ignorance - You create, maintain & annihilate"
- The performance of charities, sacrifice and penance must be done in the mode of goodness. Performed in the modes of passion or ignorance, they are certainly inferior in quality. BG 1972 purports
- The period dominated by the mode of goodness is called Satya-yuga
- The planets in the spiritual sky are at least three times the number of those in the material sky. Such planets, being spiritual, are in fact transcendental to the material modes; therefore they are constituted in the mode of unalloyed goodness only

- The result of pious action is pure and is said to be in the mode of goodness. But action done in the mode of passion results in misery, and action performed in the mode of ignorance results in foolishness
- The ritualistic ceremonies recommended in religious systems are certainly on the platform of goodness, but because within this material world even the mode of goodness is sometimes polluted by the other qualities - namely passion and ignorance
- The second Sandarbha, called Bhagavat-sandarbha, draws a distinction between impersonal Brahman and localized Paramatma and describes the spiritual world and the domination of the mode of goodness devoid of contamination by the other two material modes
- The self-centered materialistic ego, thus being transformed into three features, becomes known as the modes of goodness, passion & ignorance in three divisions, namely the powers that evolve matter, knowledge of material creations, and the intelligence
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is described here as the reservoir of all goodness and all pleasure. Unless one is situated in the mode of goodness, there is no real pleasure

- The three kinds of energies are the modes of goodness, the modes of passion and the modes of ignorance. And when they are spiritually conceived, the same three kinds of energies are manifested as spiritual potency, material potency and marginal potency
- The three modes of nature (goodness, passion and ignorance) are its center of activities, and the eight ingredients of nature (earth, water, fire, air, sky, mind, intelligence and false ego) comprise the rim of the wheel
- The universes within the material energy are called Devi-dhama, and within Devi-dhama the predominating Deity is Visnu, who is assisted by Brahma and Siva. Devi-dhama is controlled by three modes, namely goodness, passion, and ignorance

- There are persons who are controlled by the modes of ignorance and passion and those who are controlled by the mode of goodness. The creation is so varied that there are always varieties found in every society

- There is opportunity for men in the modes of ignorance and passion to be elevated to the mode of goodness, and that system is called KC. But one who does not take advantage of this opportunity certainly will continue in the lower modes. BG 1972 purports
- There is sometimes a competition between the mode of goodness and the mode of ignorance. That is the way of material existence
- Therefore human life is meant for subduing the modes of passion and ignorance and advancing in the mode of goodness

- These modes (sattva, rajas and tamas) are omnipresent in the material world, and as such, at every hour, every minute, every second, the process of creation, maintenance and annihilation is taking place all over the material universe
- They (contaminated persons) cannot understand that the Vedas deal with activities of the material modes of nature - goodness, passion and ignorance
- They (people of the modern age) are simply developing the qualities of rajas (passion) and tamas (ignorance), neglecting the other quality of nature, sattva (goodness), and the brahminical qualifications. Therefore the entire society is in chaos
- They (the scientist and philosopher) are attracted toward working in the mode of goodness, and, as long as they have an attraction for working in that way, they have to take some type of body in the modes of nature. BG 1972 purports
- They (the Visnu forms) glanced upon Their devotees, embracing them and protecting them by smiling. Their smiles resembled the mode of goodness, protecting all the desires of the devotees, and the glancing of Their eyes resembled the mode of passion
- They (those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance and goodness) are bewildered before the Supreme Lord in His personal feature, which possesses all beauty, opulence, knowledge, strength, fame and renunciation. BG 1972 purports
- This external energy is also displayed in the three modes of goodness, passion and ignorance. Similarly, the internal potency is also displayed in three spiritual modes - samvit, sandhini and hladini
- This is indicated by Krsna in Bhagavad-gita: That which in the beginning may be just like poison, but at the end is like nectar, and which awakens one to self-realization, is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness - BG 18.37
- This Krsna consciousness movement is directly offering the spiritual platform which is above the mode of goodness
- This life creates one's next life. If in one's present life one lives in the mode of goodness and always thinks of Krsna, it is possible for one to remember Krsna at the end of one's life

- This Padma Purana is meant for the persons who are in the modes of goodness
- This position (mode of goodness where one can make spiritual advancement & understand things clearly) is not possible for everyone
- Those in the mode of goodness can engage in devotional service, and after that they can return home, back to Godhead (yanti mad-yajino 'pi mam). That is the real purpose of human life
- Those in the mode of ignorance are called Raksasas, those in the mode of passion are called asuras, and those in the mode of goodness are called suras, or demigods
- Those influenced by the mode of goodness are given places in the upper planetary systems - Brahmaloka (Satyaloka), Tapoloka, Janaloka and Maharloka
- Those operating in the modes of ignorance and passion cannot be as perfect as that system in the mode of goodness. In Bhagavad-gita everything has been divided into three qualitative divisions; therefore religious systems are similarly categorized
- Those situated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets; those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; & those in the mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds

- Those who act in the mode of goodness are promoted to higher planetary systems to become demigods, those who act in an ordinary way and do not commit excessively sinful acts remain within this middle planetary system
- Those who are actually serious about human life should take to the mode of goodness and in good association transcend the modes and become situated in Krsna consciousness. This is the aim of human life. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are actually situated in the mode of goodness (sattva-guna) of material nature worship only visnu-tattvas
- Those who are highly developed in the mode of goodness are promoted to the higher, heavenly planetary system, and those who are overpowered by the mode of passion are situated in the middle planetary systems - the earth and similar planets
- Those who are in the mode of goodness are promoted to higher planets, in a higher status of life - BG 14.14
- Those who are in the mode of goodness are promoted to the regions of the demigods, those who are in the mode of passion are placed in human society, and those who are situated in the mode of ignorance are placed in the society of animals or ghosts
- Those who are in the mode of goodness can partially enter into the transcendental understanding, but it is advised in Bhagavad-gita that one has to surpass this
- Those who are in the mode of goodness think that each and every person is God, and thus they laugh at the pure devotees, who try to engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord
- Those who are in the mode of goodness, the transcendental worship of Visnu is recommended. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are in the modes of goodness, their lust is a different quality. Those who are in passion, their lust is in different quality. Those who are ignorance, their lust is different quality
- Those who are in the modes of goodness, they want to work for a higher elevation of life - going to higher planetary system
- Those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance, and even those who are in the mode of goodness, cannot go beyond the impersonal Brahman conception of the Absolute Truth. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are situated in the mode of goodness act piously according to Vedic injunctions. Thus they are elevated to the higher planetary systems where the demigods live
- Those who are situated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets; those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; and those in the mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds
- Those who are situated in the mode of goodness, who neither hate inauspicious work nor are attached to auspicious work, have no doubts about work. BG 18.10 - 1972
- Those who are surcharged with the mode of ignorance are degraded to the lower planetary systems or to the animal kingdom. The demigods are highly developed in the mode of goodness, and thus they are situated in the heavenly planets
- Those who are transcendental even to the material modes of nature are situated in the mode of pure goodness; they attain eternal life in the spiritual world
- Those who are very advanced in knowledge and are situated in the mode of goodness follow the Vedic instructions of the sruti and smrti and other religious scriptures, including the pancaratriki-vidhi
- Through Krsna consciousness, society will develop the mode of goodness. When the mode of goodness is developed, people will see things as they are. BG 1972 purports
- Thus the Lord of the universes maintains all planets inhabited by demigods, men and lower animals. Assuming the roles of incarnations, He performs pastimes to reclaim those in the mode of pure goodness
- To be completely freed from all material tinges is to become free from the mode of goodness also
- To live in the forest is in the mode of goodness, and to live in the city, or town, is in the mode of passion, and to live in slaughterhouse and brothel and drunkards, these are the residential quarter in ignorance
- To search the audience of God in a lonely forest is considered to be in the mode of goodness. One can go out into the forest to attain spiritual perfection, but that does not mean that one can see the Lord personally there

- Under the direction of the Supreme Lord, these three classes of men are created by material nature, but those in the mode of goodness have a greater chance to be elevated to the spiritual world, back home, back to Godhead
- Understanding which discriminates by intelligence is situated in the mode of goodness
- Unless one is situated in the mode of goodness, one cannot see things as they are. The passionate and the ignorant cannot even see things as they are
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha, those who are situated in brahminical qualification, goodness, modes of goodness, they are promoted to the higher planetary system
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha. If you are regulated in the modes of goodness, sattva-stha, sattva-guna, then you are promoted to the higher planetary system, higher system of life
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-stha: (BG 14.18) those in the mode of goodness are elevated to the heavenly planets. Adho gacchanti tamasah: similarly, those too engrossed in ignorance enter the hellish planetary systems
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah: (BG 14.18) great rsis, sages and sannyasis who maintain themselves in sattva-guna, or the mode of material goodness, are elevated to a higher planetary system
- Urdhvam gacchanti sattva-sthah: those who are in the mode of goodness, avoiding the four principles of sinful life, will live their next life on a higher planetary system

- Vasudeva said, "This material world is like a great flowing river, and its waves are the three material modes of nature - goodness, passion and ignorance"
- Visnu is the master of the mode of goodness, Brahma is the master of the mode of passion, and Mahesvara is the master of the mode of ignorance. There are different kinds of devotees according to the modes of nature
- Visnu takes charge of sattva-guna (the mode of goodness), Lord Brahma takes charge of rajo-guna (the mode of passion), and Lord Siva takes charge of tamo-guna - the mode of ignorance

- We can see that those who are situated in the mode of goodness live longer than those who are situated in the tamo-guna or rajo-guna

- We have seen already that we can hardly calculate the wondrous condition of life in Brahmaloka, but the highest condition of life, the mode of goodness, can bring us to this. BG 1972 purports
- When a devotee worships the Supreme Personality of Godhead and offers the results of his activities in order to free himself from the inebrieties of fruitive activities, his devotion is in the mode of goodness
- When charity is to be given, one should take instruction from BG (17.20): "That gift which is given out of duty, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person, and without expectation of return, is considered to be charity in the mode of goodness"
- When he (the living entity) becomes conditioned by nature's modes of goodness, passion, or ignorance, he develops those respective qualities of goodness, passion, and ignorance
- When it is (the mahat-tattva) agitated by the will of the Supreme at first the modes of passion and goodness are prominent
- When it is influenced by the mode of passion, the infection is at the symptomatic stage. However, when the body is influenced by the mode of goodness, the materialistic infection becomes purified
- When one becomes jubilant on account of awakening the modes of goodness by dint of devotional service, at that time he becomes liberated from material contamination and is able to understand the science of God
- When one becomes Krsna conscious, the modes of passion and darkness immediately vanish, and then the mode of goodness (sattva-guna) remains

- When one is situated in the mode of goodness he is able to understand knowledge of the self, or transcendental knowledge. This knowledge cannot be appreciated by any ordinary man
- When one is situated in the mode of goodness, he can make spiritual advancement and understand things clearly
- When the embodied being is able to transcend these three modes (goodness, passion, and ignorance), he can become free from birth, death, old age, and their distresses and can enjoy nectar even in this life - BG 14.20

- When the mind is educated in Krsna consciousness, or higher consciousness in the mode of goodness, one is transferred either to the upper, heavenly planets or to the spiritual world, the Vaikuntha planets
- When the mode of goodness is mixed with the mode of passion, one worships the sun-god, Vivasvan. When the mode of goodness is mixed with the mode of ignorance, one worships Ganapati, or Ganesa
