Theme Analysis

The mode of goodness, or sattva-guṇa, is the purest of the three material modes, characterized by illumination, knowledge, and a sense of happiness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a person in this mode is wiser than others, controls their mind and senses, and performs duties without attachment. Foods in the mode of goodness are wholesome, juicy, and fatty—such as milk, grains, fruits, and vegetables—which increase the duration of life. Although goodness elevates one to higher planetary systems and offers a peaceful life, it is still a cause of bondage because it conditions the soul to the concept of superior knowledge and happiness. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to transcend even the mode of goodness and reach the state of śuddha-sattva, or pure goodness, which is the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

  • Illuminating Nature: Goodness brings knowledge and frees one from sinful reactions.
  • Diet: Foods are sweet, juicy, and nourishing (milk, sugar, rice, fruits).
  • Destination: Those who die in this mode go to higher, heavenly planets.
  • The Bondage: It binds the soul through attachment to happiness and knowledge.
  • The Goal: One must rise to the Vasudeva state (pure goodness) to attain liberation.
