Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda simplifies the vast complexity of spiritual life into a single, potent instruction: abide by the orders of Kṛṣṇa. This act is the definition of true religion (dharma) and the essence of morality. While ordinary morality is based on social conventions, spiritual morality is defined solely by the Lord's command—even if that command seems contradictory, as in the case of Arjuna fighting. The conditioned souls are in the material world precisely because they disobeyed Kṛṣṇa, choosing to follow the dictation of their senses. Therefore, the return path, or liberation, is achieved the moment one voluntarily agrees to be dictated by Kṛṣṇa. This agreement creates "oneness" (kaivalya) not by merging, but by having no disagreement with the Lord's will.

  • The Definition of Religion: Real religion is not a sectarian formula but simply knowing God and abiding by His orders. Since God is one, religion is also one.
  • Spiritual Morality: Morality is not a fixed list of do's and don'ts but dynamic obedience. Whatever Kṛṣṇa orders—whether it is fighting or surrendering—is the highest morality.
  • True Oneness: Oneness with God does not mean becoming God; it means reaching a state of consciousness where one has no disagreement with Kṛṣṇa and follows His orders perfectly.
  • The Cause of Bondage: The living entities are imprisoned in the material world because they refused to abide by Kṛṣṇa's order. Reversing this choice is the key to liberation.
  • Conquering the Senses: Success in life means changing one's master: instead of abiding by the dictation of the senses, one must learn to abide by the dictation of Kṛṣṇa or His representative.
