Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that being absorbed in thought of Kṛṣṇa is the highest platform of bhakti-yoga and the secret of the Bhagavad-gītā. This state of consciousness is not reserved for those who retire from the world; rather, it is achieved by executing one's daily duties while the mind and intelligence remain fixed on the Lord. Whether one is a responsible officer like Ambarisa Maharaja or a simple housewife like the gopīs of Vṛndāvana, the goal of life is to maintain this absorption twenty-four hours a day. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that this constant thinking of Kṛṣṇa acts as a purification process, clearing the heart of material hankerings and dualities. Such absorption is particularly critical at the time of death, as the subject matter which attracts the dying man becomes the beginning of his next life. By practicing this absorption through chanting, hearing, and temple service, the devotee is assured of a transfer to the spiritual kingdom, Goloka Vṛndāvana, and is considered the best of all yogīs.

  • The Topmost Yogī: Anyone who is always absorbed in the thought of Kṛṣṇa is confirmed by the Bhagavad-gītā to be the best and most perfect of all yogīs.
  • Practical Samādhi: True samādhi is defined as executing regulated activities, such as temple service or book distribution, while the mind remains absorbed in Kṛṣṇa.
  • Internal Purification: Inward cleanliness and the clearance of material dirt are achieved simply by keeping the consciousness always absorbed in thought of Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Example of Vṛndāvana: The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, especially the gopīs, set the ideal standard by being absorbed in Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes during all their regular activities.
  • The Destination of Death: Constant absorption throughout life ensures that at the moment of death, the soul returns home, back to Godhead, without a doubt.
