Theme Analysis

The destiny of every living entity within the material world is strictly governed by the law of karma, a system of cause and effect that dictates the conditions of one's birth, duration of life, and experience of happiness or distress. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the soul, although eternal and spiritual, accepts various material bodies—ranging from demigods to insects—based on their past activities and desires. This relentless cycle forces the living entity to wander throughout the universe, sometimes elevated to higher planetary systems and sometimes degraded to lower forms of life, purely as a reaction to their own work.

  • The Universal Wandering: Driven by the results of fruitive activities, the conditioned soul travels throughout the entire cosmos, taking birth in different species and planetary systems, endlessly fluctuating between high and low positions.
  • The Changing of Material Dresses: The physical body is compared to a dress awarded by material nature; based on the quality of one's past work, one may appear as a king, a demigod, or an animal, but the spirit soul within remains the same.
  • Predestined Happiness and Distress: Material enjoyment and suffering are already fixed by destiny and arrive without invitation; therefore, endeavoring solely for material comfort is a waste of time, as one cannot change what is ordained by karma.
  • The Sanction of the Supreme Lord: While the living entity desires, it is the Supreme Lord who sanctions the awarding of specific bodies and circumstances, acting as the impartial witness to the individual's past deeds.
  • Breaking the Cycle: The only way to escape the stringent laws of karma and stop the repetition of birth and death is to take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and engage in devotional service.
