Theme Analysis

To live according to sastra means to accept the authority of revealed scripture as the ultimate evidence and guide for human life. Srila Prabhupada emphasizes that sastra is not merely a book of rituals but the law of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, providing scientific direction for everything from social organization and hygiene to the highest spiritual realization. One cannot manufacture religion or social standards; they must be verified by the tripartite check system of sadhu (saintly persons), sastra (scripture), and guru (spiritual master). Whether explaining the structure of the universe, the duties of the varnasrama system, or the process of chanting the holy names, the standard is always "according to the sastra."

  • The Ultimate Authority: Sastra represents the direct law given by God. Just as citizens must follow state laws, human beings must follow scriptural injunctions to avoid suffering and attain perfection.
  • The Qualification of the Guru: A bona fide spiritual master speaks and acts strictly according to sastra. He does not invent new methods but transmits the parampara knowledge unchanged.
  • Social and Moral Order: A civilized society is governed by rules regarding marriage, diet, and caste duties (varnasrama) found in scripture. Activities like meat-eating, intoxication, gambling, and illicit sex are condemned as pillars of sinful life.
  • Cosmology and Nature: From the fire of digestion in the stomach to the movements of planets on the hood of Ananta, all natural phenomena operate under the direction of the Supreme Lord as described in Vedic literature.
