Theme Analysis

The advanced stage of spiritual life is marked by steady realization, purified vision, and deep love for Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that in the advanced stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness one no longer makes material and spiritual distinctions in the ordinary way, because everything is seen in relation to Kṛṣṇa. This stage cannot be imitated; if a neophyte tries to copy advanced symptoms, the result becomes ludicrous or spiritually dangerous. Real advancement brings tolerance of happiness and distress, freedom from bodily consciousness, pure goodness, and dependence on proper guidance until one is qualified for higher realization. When love for Kṛṣṇa matures fully, the devotee becomes fit for transfer to Goloka Vṛndāvana.

  • Seeing Kṛṣṇa Everywhere: In the advanced stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one sees only Kṛṣṇa in everything. The distinction between matter and spirit is transformed by realized understanding of the Lord's presence.
  • No Imitation of Advanced Symptoms: Ecstatic symptoms appear automatically when one truly reaches the advanced stage. They should never be imitated by a neophyte for display or prestige.
  • Guidance Before Higher Realization: Until one is advanced, one must take instruction from guru, the spiritual master, and the representative of the Supersoul. Surrender to the Supersoul belongs to a mature stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
  • Love of Kṛṣṇa Is the Highest Stage: In the advanced stage, the devotee falls completely in love with Kṛṣṇa. This prepares one to enter the Lord's spiritual abode, Goloka Vṛndāvana.
