Theme Analysis

Modern civilization places tremendous faith in scientific advancement, technological innovation, and intellectual development as the means for achieving happiness and overcoming suffering. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, however, that material scientific knowledge, when divorced from spiritual understanding, remains incomplete because it cannot solve the fundamental problems of existence, birth, death, old age, and disease. Although scientific progress may temporarily improve bodily comfort, it cannot liberate the living entity (jīva) from the laws of material nature (prakṛti). Real knowledge begins when one understands the distinction between the body and the soul and recognizes the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the ultimate source of all intelligence, energy, and order. Thus, true advancement of scientific knowledge culminates not in material dominance, but in God consciousness and realization of the Absolute Truth.

  • The Incompleteness of Material Science: Scientific advancement focused solely on bodily comfort cannot address the deeper existential miseries of life. Despite technological progress, humanity remains subject to janma, mṛtyu, jarā, and vyādhi.
  • The Covering Influence of Māyā: Material knowledge without spiritual wisdom often increases false pride and illusion. Under māyā, people become convinced that scientific progress alone can solve all problems while ignoring the Supreme Controller.
  • Dependence on the Supreme Intelligence: All creativity, scientific discovery, and intellectual advancement ultimately originate from Paramātmā within the heart. Human intelligence functions only by the sanction and guidance of the Supreme Lord.
  • Real Science as Jñāna-Vijñāna: Vedic knowledge does not reject science but elevates it by connecting it to transcendence. True advancement means understanding both material phenomena and the spiritual reality beyond matter through jñāna-vijñāna.
