Theme Analysis

Going against God means misusing independence by resisting the Supreme Lord's authority, service, devotees, and will. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that material existence itself is a life of revolt, where the living being rejects service to Kṛṣṇa and becomes controlled by karma, illusion, and repeated suffering. The devotee therefore learns to tolerate personal insult, but never to approve blasphemy against the Lord or His devotees.

  • Misused Independence: God gives the living being freedom, but freedom used against His will brings suffering. The varieties of material bodies and conditions arise from this misuse of independence.
  • Demoniac Rebellion: The asura mentality rejects God's supremacy, scripture, and devotional service. Such rebellion keeps the soul bound in material existence instead of restoring its natural service.
  • Devotee's Response: A devotee may tolerate insults against himself, but he cannot tolerate blasphemy against God or His devotees. This strength protects devotion from becoming weak sentiment.
  • Returning to Service: The opposite of being against God is accepting His supremacy and acting according to His will. When the soul returns to service, bondage is replaced by shelter and spiritual direction.
