Theme Analysis

One of the most immediate and profound philosophical lessons taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda is the practical proof of the soul's existence. He frequently points out that there is something active spread all over the body. If you pinch any part of the body—from the head down to the toes—you immediately feel pain. This pervasive feeling is consciousness. According to the Bhagavad-gītā, consciousness is the symptom of the atomic spirit soul. Although the soul is infinitesimally small and situated locally within the heart, it is so powerful that it spreads its illuminating influence all over the body, just as a single drop of poison quickly spreads its effect, or as the sun situated in one place illuminates the entire solar system. When the soul leaves, consciousness vanishes, and the body can be chopped to pieces without protest.

A secondary but crucial theme in this category is the distinction between individual consciousness and supreme consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda vigorously refutes the Māyāvādī philosophers who falsely claim that they are God, spread everywhere. The individual soul's consciousness is strictly limited; it is spread only all over its own specific body. In contrast, the Supreme Lord's consciousness is spread all over the universe. Additionally, the phrase "all over the body" appears in the context of devotional culture and analogies. Devotees decorate themselves by writing the holy names or marking tilaka all over the body, and they experience ecstatic symptoms (like trembling or hair standing on end) spreading all over the body during intense spiritual emotion. Conversely, Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the analogy of an elephant that bathes in a lake only to throw dust all over its body upon returning to the shore, vividly illustrating the uselessness of ritualistic atonement without a permanent change in consciousness.

  • The Symptom of the Soul: The primary proof that we are not matter is that consciousness is spread all over the body. This consciousness originates from the atomic soul located in the heart.
  • Individual vs. Supreme Consciousness: The individual soul is conscious only of its own body. Only the Supreme Lord (Superconsciousness) is conscious of what is happening all over the universe.
  • The Elephant Bath Analogy: Material atonement without spiritual realization is compared to an elephant washing itself, only to immediately throw dirt all over its body again.
  • Ecstasy and Devotional Culture: Advanced devotees experience spiritual ecstasy spreading all over the body, and practitioners are advised to mark tilaka and the holy names all over the body as part of Deity worship (arcana).
