Theme Analysis

The supreme instruction of the Bhagavad-gītā is man-manā bhava mad-bhakto: always think of Kṛṣṇa and become His devotee. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while there are many yoga systems involving severe austerities, breath control, and physical postures, the absolute perfection of all yoga is simply to keep the mind constantly absorbed in the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Lord Kṛṣṇa personally confirms that the yogī who always thinks of Him within the core of their heart is the greatest of all transcendentalists.

This constant remembrance (smaraṇam) is not an artificial or void meditation. It is achieved practically through the process of bhakti-yoga, specifically by constantly chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra and engaging the senses in active devotional service. When the mind is forcefully engaged by the transcendental vibration of the holy name, the form, qualities, and pastimes of Kṛṣṇa naturally awaken within the heart. Even in the midst of executing one's occupational duties, like Arjuna on the battlefield, a devotee can maintain this perfect, unbroken meditation.

Always thinking of Kṛṣṇa provides ultimate protection from the dangers of material existence. It cleanses the heart of material desires, eradicates sinful reactions, and lifts the conditioned soul above the blazing fire of illusion. Because Kṛṣṇa is absolute, meditating on Him purifies the senses and firmly establishes the living entity on the spiritual platform. Ultimately, the entire purpose of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is to train the mind so that at the time of death, one is thinking exclusively of the Supreme Lord, thereby guaranteeing an eternal return back home, back to Godhead.

  • The Highest Yogī: True meditation is not gymnastic feats or focusing on the void; the greatest yogī is the one who constantly thinks of Kṛṣṇa.
  • Practical Meditation: Always thinking of the Lord is easily achieved by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and engaging in practical devotional service like Deity worship.
  • Absolute Protection: Keeping the mind fixed on Kṛṣṇa extinguishes the fire of material existence and protects the devotee from all sinful reactions.
  • The Ultimate Goal: By training the mind to think of Kṛṣṇa throughout life, one ensures that they will remember Him at the time of death, granting immediate promotion to the spiritual world.
