Theme Analysis

The Vedic literature provides a highly detailed and scientific understanding of how God interacts with His creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Absolute Truth is realized in three hierarchical features: the all-pervading impersonal Brahman, the localized Paramātmā (or antaryāmī), and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān. The word antaryāmī literally means the "inner controller." While Bhagavān remains eternally engaged in His pastimes in the spiritual world, He expands Himself as the antaryāmī to enter into the material cosmos. In this feature, the Lord is all-pervading; He is the active principle maintaining the universe, and He exists within every single atom.

On a deeply personal level, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the antaryāmī is situated in the core of the heart of every living entity. We are never alone. The individual soul and the Supersoul sit together like two birds in the tree of the material body. While the individual soul attempts to enjoy the fruits of the tree, the antaryāmī acts as the supreme witness and constant companion. Furthermore, for those who are sincerely trying to advance in spiritual life, Kṛṣṇa acts as the caitya-guru (the spiritual master from within). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord is so kind that He helps the conditioned soul from the outside by sending the physical spiritual master and the scriptures, and He helps from the inside as the antaryāmī, directing the soul's intelligence toward pure devotional service.

  • The Three Features: The Absolute Truth is understood in three phases. Antaryāmī refers specifically to the Paramātmā, or the localized Supersoul feature of the Supreme Lord.
  • The Universal Controller: The antaryāmī is the active principle and inner force of all creation. By His plenary portion, He pervades the entire universe, down to the atomic level.
  • The Constant Companion: The living entity is never abandoned. The Supersoul sits within the heart, accompanying the individual soul through all its bodily transmigrations.
  • The Caitya-Guru: As the inner spiritual master, the antaryāmī witnesses everything (even hearing the inner thoughts of His devotees) and kindly provides the intelligence by which one can come to Kṛṣṇa.
