Theme Analysis
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, is completely self-sufficient and requires no help to maintain the cosmic manifestation or enjoy His spiritual pastimes. However, out of His causeless mercy and desire for loving exchanges, He allows His devotees and plenary expansions to assist Him. The foremost assistant is Lord Balarāma, Kṛṣṇa's first bodily expansion. Balarāma assists the Lord in the spiritual world and further expands into forms like Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa, the three Viṣṇu puruṣa-avatāras, and Lord Śeṣa (Ananta) to manage the material creation and perform an unlimited variety of services.
When Lord Kṛṣṇa descends to the material world, He does not come alone. He brings His eternal servitors, and He also requests various demigods to take birth on earth to assist Him. These demigods appear as cowherd boys in Vṛndāvana or as members of the Yadu dynasty, encouraging the Lord's pastimes much like artists praising one another. Furthermore, the Lord orchestrates historical events, such as the Battle of Kurukṣetra, specifically to allow His pure devotees like Arjuna to assist Him in His mission of diminishing the burden of the earth.
In the most intimate spheres of devotion, assisting Kṛṣṇa takes on profoundly sweet flavors. In Vṛndāvana, friends like Subala assist Kṛṣṇa in His loving dealings with Rādhārāṇī, while in Dvārakā, the queens and their maidservants assist Him by dressing Him, bathing Him, and feeding Him. This privilege of assistance is not limited to the past; today, brāhmaṇas, preachers, and even husbands and wives working together in the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement are actively assisting the Supreme Lord in His supreme endeavor to deliver conditioned souls back to Godhead.
- Divine Expansions: Lord Balarāma, as the first expansion, and His subsequent manifestations like Lord Śeṣa and the Viṣṇu forms, exist primarily to assist Kṛṣṇa in cosmic and spiritual affairs.
- The Role of Demigods: High-ranking demigods frequently descend to the material world in various guises to assist the Lord in executing His earthly pastimes and missions.
- Executing the Lord's Mission: Pure devotees like Arjuna agree to forgo their personal desires to assist the Lord in His grand plans, such as relieving the earth of its demonic burden.
- Intimate and Practical Service: Whether it is the queens bathing Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā or modern devotees preaching the philosophy of Bhagavad-gītā, assisting the Lord is the eternal, joyful duty of every living entity.
