According to the Vedic scriptures, the highest possible benediction for a conditioned soul wandering through the material universe is to obtain the association of a pure devotee of the Lord (sādhu-saṅga). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the value of even a fraction of a second of such association cannot be compared to any material opulence, elevation to heavenly planets, or even the liberation of merging into the Brahman effulgence. By sitting with advanced Vaiṣṇavas and submissively hearing the glories of Lord Kṛṣṇa (śravaṇam), a person's material attachments are rapidly slackened, their misgivings are destroyed, and their dormant love for God is awakened. This process is so potent that even the most stubborn impersonalists naturally abandon their desire for liberation and take up devotional service.
Therefore, the foremost duty of a sincere practitioner is to protect their spiritual life by remaining constantly in the association of pure devotees. Just as bad association breeds sinful habits, the association of Vaiṣṇavas cultivates pure character and deep spiritual realization. To advance safely to the highest stages of ecstatic love (prema), a neophyte must carefully fence in their devotional creeper by associating strictly with devotees, adhering to the regulative principles, and diligently avoiding offenses against those pure souls who are the transparent via media to Kṛṣṇa.

- Those known as the sahajiyas foolishly think that their material bodies are transcendental. Because of this, they are always bereft of the association of pure devotees, and thus they cannot behave like Vaisnavas
- Those who are always attached to understanding the transcendental meaning of Srimad-Bhagavatam, who are always eager to associate with advanced devotees the seed of love (rati) is expanded in the heart by previous and current reformatory processes
- Those who are always busy with fruitive activities come to the Lord in material distress and at that time associate with pure devotees and become, in their distress, devotees of the Lord. BG 1972 purports
- Those who are in pursuit of knowledge and who get the opportunity to associate with a pure devotee also engage in the devotional service of the Lord

- Transcendental attachment is so powerful that if such attachment is seen manifested even in some common man, by the association of a pure devotee it can bring one to the perfectional stage

- We do not want liberation. We want to serve the purpose of the Gosvamis, in association with pure devotees. To stop birth and death is not our purpose
