Theme Analysis

The ultimate constitutional position of every living entity is to be in the association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the material world, conditioned souls attempt to find happiness independently by lording over material nature. However, because the soul is a spiritual spark meant to dance in the fire of the Supreme Lord's association, any attempt to be happy without Him is compared to a zero trying to have value without the number one. True human civilization is meant specifically to facilitate God realization, allowing the soul to purify its existence and return back home, back to Godhead.

The process of associating with God is completely absolute and purificatory. Just as an object placed in the fire gradually acquires the qualities of fire and becomes hot, a conditioned soul who constantly associates with the Supreme Lord becomes godly and purified of all sinful reactions. This association is practically achieved in the present life through the nine processes of devotional service, especially hearing and chanting. Because the Lord is absolute, His holy name, His pastimes, and His Deity form are non-different from Him. Therefore, chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra is exactly as good as associating with the Supreme Lord face to face.

This personal association is the highest perfection of spiritual life, far superseding the goals of the impersonalists and mystic yogīs. While mental speculators seek to merge into the impersonal Brahman effulgence, that position lacks the bliss of active spiritual exchange, causing the soul to eventually fall back down to the material world. The pure devotee, however, achieves the ultimate liberation: entering the Vaikuṇṭha planets or Goloka Vṛndāvana to eternally associate with the Supreme Person in a loving relationship. Upon quitting the material body, such a bhakti-yogī never returns to this miserable material world.

  • The Original Position: The living entities were created specifically to enjoy blissful association with the Supreme Lord in the spiritual sky.
  • The Purifying Fire: Associating with God naturally makes one godly, just as associating with fire automatically transfers heat and light.
  • Absolute Association: In the absolute realm, the Lord's name, form, and pastimes are identical to Him; therefore, chanting and hearing are direct association with God.
  • The Highest Liberation: Unlike merging into the impersonal Brahman, eternal personal association with the Lord provides true, unending satisfaction and prevents falldown.
