The path of devotional service is unique because it removes all fear and anxiety from the heart of the practitioner. This absolute confidence produces an extraordinary psychological state, even in the midst of mortal combat. The history of Vṛtrāsura perfectly illustrates this. Although appearing as a demon, Vṛtrāsura was an exalted Vaiṣṇava who fearlessly assured King Indra that the thunderbolt would successfully kill him, because it was prepared under the direct instructions of Lord Viṣṇu. Finally, the ultimate assurance a devotee receives is the guarantee of returning back to Godhead. By tolerating the miseries of the material world and humbly acknowledging their fallen position, like Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura, a devotee's promotion to Vaikuṇṭhaloka is assured in all circumstances.
