Bhāva is the pivotal stage in the evolution of bhakti, marking the transition from regulated practice to spontaneous emotional absorption. Śrīla Prabhupāda defines it as the preliminary stage of love of Godhead, comparable to a sun-ray preceding the full sun of prema. Situated on the platform of pure goodness (suddha-sattva), bhāva is attained after one passes through the gradual cleansing of the heart, specifically the cessation of unwanted habits (anartha-nivṛtti) and the development of deep attachment (āsakti). At this stage, the devotee becomes permanently fixed in their resolve, utilizing every moment for Kṛṣṇa and remaining detached from material identification.
