Theme Analysis

The desires of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu operate on two distinct levels: the external missionary vision and the internal spiritual relish. Externally, the Lord desires that the chanting of the Holy Name be spread to every town and village on earth, instructing His followers to liberate humanity through this process. Internally, appearing in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, He desires to taste the sweetness of Kṛṣṇa's love, a desire He fulfilled through confidential dialogues with devotees like Rāmānanda Rāya. Furthermore, His personal prayers (Śikṣāṣṭaka) establish the gold standard for all desire—rejecting wealth, followers, and beautiful women in favor of causeless devotional service.

  • The Standard of Purity: Lord Caitanya's personal prayer reveals the absence of material ambition. He rejects the standard goals of karma (wealth, beauty) and establishes that the only worthy desire is unmotivated service.
  • The Global Mission: His most famous desire is the prediction and order that His name be chanted in every town and village. He specifically empowers His followers to execute this will.
  • The Internal Mood: As the Supreme Lord playing the part of a devotee, He desired to experience the highest ecstatic symptoms (bhāva) and hear about the intimate pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Disciple's Duty: True disciples, like the Six Gosvāmīs and modern preachers, have no business other than executing these desires—writing books, excavating holy places, and spreading the movement.
