Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the name "Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya" was given to the Lord upon His acceptance of sannyāsa from Keśava Bhāratī. Prior to this, He was known as Nimāi Paṇḍita or Viśvambhara. This new name is significant because it indicates His function: He is Kṛṣṇa Himself (kṛṣṇa-varṇa) who induces consciousness (caitanya) of Kṛṣṇa in others.
