Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the name "Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya" was given to the Lord upon His acceptance of sannyāsa from Keśava Bhāratī. Prior to this, He was known as Nimāi Paṇḍita or Viśvambhara. This new name is significant because it indicates His function: He is Kṛṣṇa Himself (kṛṣṇa-varṇa) who induces consciousness (caitanya) of Kṛṣṇa in others. The name is described as all-auspicious, identical to the person of Kṛṣṇa, and the basis of the impersonal Brahman. Chanting the Pañca-tattva mantra (śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya...) is recommended to free one from offenses before chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.

  • Identity with Kṛṣṇa: The quotes repeatedly confirm that Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya is non-different from Kṛṣṇa. He is described as the basis of the impersonal Brahman and the source of all incarnations. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that "Kṛṣṇa Caitanya" means the original living force, Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Name given by Keśava Bhāratī: Historically, the name was conferred by Keśava Bhāratī of the Bhāratī sampradāya. However, to avoid the Māyāvādī misconception that the sannyāsī becomes the Supreme Brahman, the Lord kept the name "Kṛṣṇa Caitanya" (Kṛṣṇa Consciousness) to place Himself as an eternal servant, rather than just "Caitanya" (Consciousness).
  • Chanting the Name: The name "Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya" is potent. Śrīla Prabhupāda recommends chanting the Pañca-tattva mantra (śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda...) before the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra to become free from offenses. The name itself is identical to the person of the Lord.
  • The Golden Form: Although He is Kṛṣṇa, He appeared with a golden complexion (tviṣākṛṣṇa) to taste the bliss of Rādhārāṇī. Rūpa Gosvāmī identified Him as the most magnanimous incarnation because He freely distributes what no one else has given—pure love of Kṛṣṇa.
