Dāmodara Paṇḍita, the tenth branch of the Caitanya tree and elder brother of Śaṅkara Paṇḍita, is celebrated for his objective and sometimes stern criticism, sparing not even Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while a brahmacārī generally should not instruct a sannyāsī, Dāmodara Paṇḍita often transgressed this etiquette out of intense protective love. He famously chastised the Lord for allowing a young brāhmaṇa boy (the son of a widow) to visit Him frequently, fearing it would lead to public criticism. Although the Lord externally rebuked Dāmodara for his "nonsense" and "impudence," internally He recognized this as a sign of pure love, acknowledging that He had no other intimate friend like him. However, finding this mood of constant checking and awe slightly oppressive compared to the free affection of Śaṅkara, the Lord sent Dāmodara Paṇḍita to Navadvīpa to serve and protect Mother Śacī.
