Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda details Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's residence in Jagannātha Purī (Nīlācala) as the culmination of His manifest pastimes. After accepting sannyāsa at age 24, the Lord made Purī His headquarters for the remaining 24 years of His life. This period is divided into two phases: the first six years of extensive travel (to South India, Vṛndāvana, and Bengal) and the final eighteen years of constant residence.

  • The Final 18 Years: The most significant period is the last 18 years, where the Lord remained continuously in Purī. During this time, He was absorbed in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in separation from Kṛṣṇa. Day and night, He was overwhelmed with ecstatic love, tasting the transcendental mellows with His confidential associates, Svarūpa Dāmodara and Rāmānanda Rāya.
  • Daily Activities: Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the Lord's routine: daily visits to the Jagannātha temple (viewing the Deity with the intense longing of the gopīs at Kurukṣetra), performing kīrtana for hours, and bathing in the sea with devotees.
  • Association of Devotees: Purī became the gathering place for all Vaiṣṇavas. Devotees from Bengal, led by Advaita Ācārya and Śivānanda Sena, would visit annually for the four months of *Cāturmāsya* to participate in the Ratha-yātrā festival. Permanent residents like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, Paramānanda Purī, and Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī served the Lord intimately.
  • Dealing with King Pratāparudra: The King of Orissa, Pratāparudra, was eager to serve the Lord, even offering to remit debts to keep Him in Purī. Although the Lord initially refused to see a king, He eventually bestowed mercy upon him.
  • The Ecstasy of Separation: A central theological theme is the Lord's internal mood. In Purī, He practically demonstrated how to worship Kṛṣṇa in separation (vipralambha-sevā), teaching that this feeling of separation increases the intensity of love.
