Theme Analysis

The first and most essential instruction in spiritual life is understanding the difference between the eternal soul and the temporary material body. In the Bhagavad-gītā (2.13), Lord Kṛṣṇa establishes the science of transmigration with the phrase tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ: just as the embodied soul continuously passes from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasizes that this is not a theoretical dogma but a practical, observable fact. Medical science confirms that the physical body is changing at every second due to cellular action and reaction. The body we had as a baby no longer exists, yet we remember our childhood because our true identity—the spirit soul—has not changed.

If we accept that we survive the continuous changes of the body during this lifetime, simple logic dictates that we will also survive the final change of the body, which is commonly called death. At the moment of death, the gross body becomes unworkable, much like an old, torn garment. The eternal soul is then carried by the subtle body (mind, intelligence, and false ego) into a new gross body. This new body is not selected by our own choice, but is awarded by the laws of material nature under the strict supervision of higher authorities (daiva-netreṇa) based on our past karma.

Because the conditioned soul is forced to change bodies, they are subjected to continuous forgetfulness and the miseries of material existence. Modern civilization is completely ignorant of this science, foolishly making grand plans for temporary bodily comforts while neglecting the eternal soul. However, the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His pure devotees are not subjected to this forced change. Kṛṣṇa appears in His original, eternal spiritual body and therefore remembers everything. The ultimate goal of the human form of life is to stop this painful cycle of changing material bodies and return to the spiritual sky, Vaikuṇṭha, by reviving our eternal Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

  • The Continuous Change: The material body is changing at every second, moving from babyhood to youth to old age, yet the conscious spirit soul within remains exactly the same.
  • The Illusion of Death: Death is not the end of existence; it is simply the final change of the unworkable gross body, akin to changing an old, worn-out garment.
  • The Mechanics of Transmigration: After death, the soul is carried by the subtle body into a new physical form, which is awarded by material nature based on past karma.
  • The Spiritual Solution: While the conditioned soul is forced to change material bodies and forget past lives, the pure devotee attains an eternal spiritual body and never returns to this miserable cycle.
