Theme Analysis

The spiritual world is categorized by different mellows, or rasas, through which the living entities eternally relate to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. These relationships develop progressively. Beginning with neutrality (śānta-rasa), the affection increases into servitude, fraternity, and parenthood, ultimately reaching the absolute highest platform: conjugal love (mādhurya-rasa or śṛṅgāra-rasa). Just as the material elements evolve from ether down to earth, adding characteristics at each stage, conjugal love encompasses all the transcendental qualities of the preceding mellows. It contains the reverence of servitude, the intimacy of friendship, and the profound affection of parenthood, combined with the unparalleled sweetness of conjugal love itself.

Because it is the most complete expression of devotion, conjugal love completely satisfies Lord Kṛṣṇa. In fact, the intimacy is so perfectly sweet that the Supreme Lord willingly agrees to be completely controlled by His devotees in this mellow. They can even rebuke Him to correct His behavior, and the Lord relishes these loving rebukes far more than the reverential prayers of the Vedic hymns. The devotees situated in this relationship, particularly the internal potencies of the Lord, are considered the most confidential and the best of all devotees.

The ecstasy experienced in conjugal love knows no bounds. While advanced spiritual ecstasy is found in Lord Kṛṣṇa's pastimes in Dvārakā, the highest platform of highly advanced ecstasy, known as mahābhāva, is exhibited exclusively by the gopīs in Goloka Vṛndāvana. Historically, the deep intricacies of this topmost relationship were not fully revealed by other incarnations or Vaiṣṇava philosophies. It was by the causeless mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the golden avatāra, that this supreme gift was widely distributed. He practically demonstrated how to love Kṛṣṇa in this mood, teaching the world that one must humbly follow in the footsteps of the gopīs to attain the ultimate perfection of conjugal love for God.

  • The Progression of Devotion: Conjugal love encompasses all the qualities found in the lower mellows, just as earth contains the qualities of all other material elements.
  • Supreme Satisfaction: The Lord is most pleased and intimately controlled by devotees in conjugal love, relishing their affection over reverential prayers.
  • The Highest Ecstasy: The platform of mahābhāva is achievable exclusively in the conjugal relationship, perfectly exhibited by the gopīs of Vṛndāvana.
  • The Golden Avatāra's Gift: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu descended specifically to distribute this most elevated mellow of devotional service to the fallen souls.
