Theme Analysis

The concept of connection lies at the very heart of all bona fide spiritual practices. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently explains that the Sanskrit word yoga literally translates to "addition" or "connection," while its opposite, viyoga, means "disconnection." Currently, the conditioned soul is in a state of viyoga, suffering under material contamination because they have forgotten their eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, the true purpose of any yoga system—whether it be karma-yoga, jñāna-yoga, aṣṭāṅga-yoga, or ultimately bhakti-yoga—is to actively link the minute living entity back to the Supreme Soul.

This principle of connection also defines the true essence of religion. A system of belief that lacks a tangible connection with God cannot be considered a bona fide religion; atheism is never religion. Real religion means practically searching for God, understanding Him, and establishing a dynamic, loving relationship with Him. When a person moves beyond theoretical knowledge and actually connects with the Supreme Lord through practical devotional service, they achieve vijñāna, or realized knowledge. In this state, the soul feels millions of times more satisfied than they ever could through mundane material enjoyment.

Furthermore, a person who is truly connected with Kṛṣṇa develops a completely different vision of the material world. Unlike impersonalists who declare the world to be false (mithyā), Vaiṣṇavas understand that absolutely nothing can exist without being related to the Supreme Lord. Because material nature is connected to the Lord by His glance, everything in the universe is His property. Therefore, an advanced devotee does not artificially reject material things in a show of false renunciation (phalgu-vairāgya). Instead, they see everything in connection with Hari and expertly utilize all resources in His loving service, remaining entirely spiritual and unaffected by the material qualities even while living within the material body.

  • The Definition of Yoga: Yoga strictly means "to connect" or "to add." It is the process of linking the disconnected, conditioned soul back to the Supreme Lord.
  • The Essence of Religion: True religion is not a mere formality; it is the active, tangible process of establishing and acting upon one's eternal relationship with God.
  • The Vaiṣṇava Vision: A pure devotee sees everything in the material world as connected to the Supreme Lord and utilizes it all in His service, rejecting nothing as entirely material.
  • The Result of Connection: When the soul re-establishes its connection with God through bhakti-yoga, it transcends material miseries and experiences supreme, all-pervading satisfaction.
