The practical methodology for conquering sleep is directly tied to the regulation of other bodily demands, particularly eating. Eating and sleeping are deeply interconnected; if one eats extraordinarily, they will inevitably sleep extraordinarily. By developing the mode of goodness, practicing spiritual culture, and eating frugally—taking only the minimum required to keep body and soul together—a devotee naturally reduces their need for sleep. This systematic reduction of unnecessary bodily demands is the very definition of leading a pious life.

To understand the ultimate perfection of this practice, one must look to the predecessors of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition. The six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana perfectly demonstrated this principle (nidrāhāra-vihārakādi-vijitau) by completely conquering over sleeping, eating, and mating. They absorbed themselves so deeply in their service that physical necessities practically vanished. Ultimately, in the paramahaṁsa stage, a pure devotee conquers the desire for sleep entirely by remaining in constant samādhi, remembering the names, forms, and pastimes of Kṛṣṇa day and night, both in waking and in slumber.
